Whatever you do, do not go to a for-profit school for this. Missouri College, Sanford Brown, and the others DO NOT transfer to community colleges or to universities, no matter what they might tell you. I work at a community college now after working at one of the for-profits, and I see many, many students up to their eyeballs in loan debt from going for coding and billing or nursing assistant, and they have to start all over again if they want to move up in the field or renew their certification or anything. Every single class. And they are angry, but can do nothing about it. You can do classes for it at the local community college-- please, please do that.
I just wrote a very long response and my computer went down so I will try to sum it up quickly! I am a medical coder for a billing company. My first advise would be you need to choose the right school one that offers certifications and externships. Be carefull some schools are over priced! I went to Sanford Brown and I worked there as well in career services. I helped students find jobs and the ones that had the most problems were the ones that did not do well on the externships or they did not pass their certification test. Also most schools offer both day and night classes which helps when you have little ones. My son was 2 while I was in school it could get difficult at times. You will do well if you focuss on school.Plus do not get discouraged if you do not make the money you want to right away when you get out of school. You may not even do what you want right away. Get your foot in the door! I started as data entry just one year ago and now I am a coder making 4 dollars more. The medical field is always a good field to go into. Just make sure you really want this and stay focussed. I hope that helps!
Hi. I am not a professional coder but I was taught medical coding by an insurance company many years ago.
Medical coding and billing knowledge can be applied at Doctor's offices (coder/biller), durable medical supply companies (biller), hospitals (coder/biller), medical insurance companies like Delta Dental, BCBS, Cigna (as a claims adjustor), 3rd party billing companies (coder/biller)
I work in the medical insurance field and believe me, that knowledge can go a long way.
If you are going to school and will receive certification on Coding and Billing, that is excellent. Hopefully the school can help you in a job search of the area as well.
If you are looking into a self study course, beware. Those self studies more or less sell you a list of doctor's office to contact...most dr offices either have their own staff or they send their claims to a clearinghouse (3rd party billing company) plus I can't really see a self study being beneficial in learning the codes. You really need an instructor with this stuff.
Good luck and please let us know your progress in this endeavor.
I work in the medical coding field and really enjoy the everyday challenges. I know you can do this on line but I really would not recommend doing it this way unless you absolutely have to. I know there are a ton of schools that offer classes in medical coding, and you could check on www.aapc.com I know they list classes for different areas. That is all I can think of at this time. I think you would probably really enjoy doing this if you like to be challenged and like the medical field. Best of Luck

I know that where i am at in kansas to work in a doctors office you have to have some sort of medical transcriptions or coding and billing to work there. I have transcriptions and need coding and billing, i would suggest doing a course maybe at your local college. I think it would be a great thing, because it is almost gauranteed to have 9-5 m-f.
I used to work in medical billing and did not have a degree of any kind. I worked 8-5 and spent lots of time on the phone with insurance companies. You will at least need to have some experience with insurance claims before get a job though which is basically what the schools will teach you. Coding does require more school but it also pays really well once you get your foot in the door. If you have specific questions, please feel free to send me a message and I will answer if I can.
Hey J.! I'm not in the medical field, per say, but I do work with an eco-friendly company that is a licensed pharmaceutical. And you can work from home, which would fit your needs a little better it seems! If you would like to talk to me about it, feel free to call me at ###-###-####, or ____@____.com.
Thanks!
I have been in medical billing, a medical assistant and am now in a ADN program to become a RN. You want to look into Health Information Technogy (HIT) degrees. They will be able to get you a job in a Drs office doing medical billing. You may be able to get into a diploma program to become a medical assistant, and get a job as a medical receptionist, but if you ever whant to further your education, none of the credits will transfer, and you will have to start from scratch. Good luck!!
