Work at Starbucks?

Today I just had an interview at a grocery store and was expecting to talk about a cashier position or bakery clerk. The manager ended up selling me the idea of working as a Lead Clerk at their Starbucks instead. He said other people that didn't have experience in the coffee business (like myself) did the starbucks training and did very well. I've been a stay at home mom for over 10 years so this is very exciting to me! Has anyone else worked as a Lead Clerk at Starbucks? How did you like it? I love to drink coffee but have never worked in a coffee shop before. Please share your experience and/or pros and cons.
Thanks in advance!
SM

So What Happened?

Thank you for all the helpful feedback! Just wanted to add that it would be a full time job and the Lead Clerk position entails doing the shedule for 12 other starbucks employees, interviewing and training others, ordering inventory and other duties to help and work with the manager. So I guess I am aprehensive, anxious and a little scared because I would be in charge of other employees but I am also excited at the same time. It sounds like the training is thorough as it lasts for 3 weeks.

Starbucks is a great company to work for. You become part of their team. Their training is phenomenal. If you can stay with them for a year or more, you will learn a lot about corporations, systems and meet a lot of interesting people.

If anything it is great experience.

Mothers are awesome managers. They can multi-task, deal with tantrums, negotiate, use time efficiently, and have tons of patience. You will be fine - you will be surprised - and your family will adjust too. Good luck!

A friend of mine worked at a different coffee shop. She "fell into it" by accident one day--was waiting to talk to someone else at the time. She loved it. One thing you want to check out is if this Starbucks is owned by the store or by Starbucks. There is apparently a difference. I was talking to a girl from Target at the Starbucks in-store and she said that she is actually employed by the store, not Starbucks so is paid by Target. There could be a difference in benefits. But I would try it out and talk to the manager about what if it did not work out well.

I worked in cafes all through college. Physically it can be hard, but the day goes quickly and it is fun. You usually get to chat a bit with people and they are usually nicer to you than when you are just a cashier. Good luck.

My SD is a barrista when she is home from college and likes it. Fast paced, and all that. She learned very quickly how to make a venti mocha whatever. I'd give it a go. See how you like it.

Congratulations, and good luck.

Set up rules, and do not stray for anyone. IE.. they need to tell you 1 or 2 weeks in advanced for Time off, after the schedule is made, they are expected to be there or find someone.. that sort of thing.

:)

I worked at Starbucks inside a Barnes and Noble fresh out of college. I did enjoy it. The pros- the other employees were great. Had a ton of fun and was a low stress job. Cons- You're on your feet a lot. And you'll never want Starbucks coffee again (well, maybe that's a pro). Seriously, I can count on one hand the times I've had a cup of Starbucks in the last 15 years.

how awesome that you so impressed the store manager!
i always assumed that the starbucks franchises in grocery stores had starbucks employees. i didn't realize the stores themselves did the staffing.
this sounds like a fun re-entry into the working world. enjoy!

Best wishes. There is an article in the NYT today that you may want to read about Starbucks and how they do their scheduling. As the person who does the scheduling, you will be required to follow their procedures:

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2014/08/13/us/starbuck...

A follow-up story with the change in management policy for scheduling happened a mere few hours later within the course of the same day.

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/15/us/starbucks-to-revise-....

Sounds like you may have to deal with the issue on the job.

Will you be working for Starbucks or the grocery store. My understanding is that Starbucks has very good benefits. Can the grocery store match them?

One great thing is that it will keep you busy all day. Your day will fly by!

Absolutely go for it. Congrats!

Not a Starbucks but a Panera. I loved it but no way on earth you can support a family on what you will make.
