Has Anyone Worked at Starbucks?

Currently I am working full-time 40 hours a week. It is way too stressful on me. I feel like I don't get enough done around my house, nor do I get enough time with my 2 kids. In about 6 months, all of our debt (minus a car and mortgage) will be paid off. I plan on going part time. I heard from a friend that Starbucks is a great company to work for and that they offer great benefits, including great medical benefits to part time employees. Just recently, I heard those benefits only apply to Starbucks full time employees. Can someone who has worked there maybe give me some details? My husbands company provides no medical. So I will need this. Starbucks is close to my house and it sounds like something I would be interested in doing. Or does anyone have any other suggestions???? Thanks!!!!

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the tips. I think when the time comes for me to work less hours - in about 6 months - I will look into this further. I just need to make sure I am getting the benefits because my husband does not get any at his job. Looks like I may just have to work a little more hours!

I once worked part time at a starbucks location inside of a Barnes and Noble. No benefits for me there! But it wasn't a horrible job either. The people I worked with were fun.

Update: A person has to work an average of 20 hours per week to be eligible for health insurance.

My daughter works at Starbucks. She does have health insurance benefits. She does NOT work 40hrs per week but she tends to average 30 or so. She is not home right now, but I'll ask and I'll get back to you on the number of hours needed to get insurance benefits. I'd bet you could call or stop in at your local store and ask them that same ?.

Do keep in mind that this is a retail job. You'll be working either really early in the am---they open at 5, 5:30 so start time is at least 30 minutes prior, they are open until 11pm so you don't get home until midnight after clean-up, you will be working holidays, etc.

You do get to bring home a pound of beans or can of tea each week. Amanda does have medical, dental and vision insurance. They don't make a lot of money but they do get pretty good tips. She has been a 'full-time' employee for over 4 years now, making nearly $10/hr. Lots of benefits but also drawbacks, depending on your life circumstances.

These benefits are only available at corporate stores. Anything inside of a grocery store, Target, etc, is an employee of that store, not Starbucks. You can give me a call later this afternoon or tonight and I can share more details at that time after I've had a chance to talk to my daughter. Good luck, D. ###-###-####

My friend worked there part-time about 6 tears ago and did have benefits, but that may have changed in this economy. The easiest way to find out would be to head to the shop by your house and ask.

I have worked there for 3 1/2 years and to get benefits you must reach the quota for the quarter to be eligible. So part time hours can range differently in each store and also based on your availibilty. The more your open the more hrs you work. To have benefits you have to work in a corprate Starbucks, no chains. The ones inside stores are not considered as corprate. Its a great place to work when you have kids or going to school!
Good luck!!!

My niece was a part timer at Starbucks and had no medical benefits. However, it was 2 years ago so maybe there were changes. She did like the atmosphere though but said it had a lot to do with the people she worked with.

I was a supervisor at Starbucks for a long time.... way too long haha. They changed the set up recently so I'm not sure if my info is completely accurate but it might give you an idea. You have to work an average of 20 hours a week, but its actually like 220 hours a quarter or something, to be eligible for benefits. But to be a part time employee you must be available for 32 hrs a week. The health benefits are great, Kaiser is an option which is so great. I loved working their until I got burned out of opening 5 days a week ( you have to get their at 4am or 5 depending on the location). The hours are really flexible though and most are willing to work around your schedule. You also get a pound of coffee every week, free coffee while you are working and 30% discount while off the clock! YAY for free coffee

I worked there after college. It was a great job. The only drawback is the hours- it wasn't a set schedule and sometimes I was working until 11 pm or later. Not sure about the benefits- there were none for part time when I worked there. It was several years ago, tho.

Dental hygiene is an awesome job, however very few dentists provide health insurance or benefits other than dental treatment for the employee and discounts for the family. Some dentists require a Bachelor in Dental Hygiene graduate, but at least an associates degreein dental hygiene is required to take boards and get a license. The required classes are the same ones dentists/nurses/doctors must take so it's not super easy. Most offices work four day weeks, but you can always find a job with no weekend hours requires.

We've a lot of moms that drive school buses here as you have full benefits. You don't say how old your children are, but that would give you some time in the middle of the day but would take you away during school mornings/afterschool. Could also join NAFE (National Association of Female Executives) to have access to benefits you would pay, but you would still need to work elsewhere to afford them. Have you considered becoming a dental hygenist? They typically work 3 days/week with benefits, medical and dental.

I do know that you don't have to work there 40 hours a week to get benefits - not sure how many hours per week you have to work. Get yourself an interview and ask!

Another company that I heard is great to work for is Costco. Along with Starbucks, you do not need to work a 40 hour week to get benefits. You might want to get an interview with Costco, too! Good luck.
