Beth I think before anyone starts to offer you suggestions you need to give us more of an idea of what you are looking for. I am sure there are a lot of us out there that would love to offer you what we are doing but it may not be the right fit for you.
First off are you looking to Telecommute like do an actual job at home?
Do you want a business Oportunity? If it is a business opportunity then also ask yourself these questions
How much do you want to spend at start up?
Do you want to do home partes?
Do you want to do deliveries?
Can you or are you passionet about what the product is (most important)

There are a lot of great companies out there but if you dont do your homework and really look into them you may find yourself doing somthing you dont enjoy and then in result will not be successful with. Plus you need to look at them. There are people who will call this a scam or that a scam because they heard this or heard that or they did this or did that too them. Remeber if a company has been around for a long time they are not a scam. Do they some times get bad apples that leave a bad impression on others yes. Dont let someone else decide for you what is the pefect company for you, only you can decide that.
For me I love that the company I work with has all natural products. My sons skin is clearing up since we started to get chemicals out of our home. Also I do not deliever or do home parties, or sell. We are a consumer direct marketing business. But just because they are great for me and I would love to offer it to you, it may not be what you are looking for.

You have to figure out what you like, what you are willing to do, etc.

You'll probably be hit up with all the MLM's and direct sell recruiters trying to sign you up to get rich quick working from home. Those opportunities are great for some people if you like pushing your products on people, having parties, and recruiting.

We work from home running our company. Keep in mind that working from home is WORK. Most companies you find would want your children in some sort of care so you can focus on the job at hand. Our daughter is at school so we are focused on the job while she is at school and on my down times, I volunteer at the school.

Figure our what you like, what you are good at and go from there. Think outside the box!

I own 4 franchises on the internet that I manage from home. I have looked for YEARS for something that I could do and weave into my busy schedule.
This is by far the best thing I have ever done or looked at. I am partnered with Target, Walmart, Travelocity and simply get paid commissions on all my shopping. I was already shopping at these stores so it seemed like a no brainer to me. If you would like more info please message me. I do webinars on a regular basis if you would like to watch one.

And I agree with Valerie. You need to find something you are going to love. Look at a few different things and do your homework. Great post Valerie.

I agree with Valerie. It's a bit hard to tell exactly what you want. If you'd like to review the company I'm in partnership with send me a message and I can schedule a webcast so that you can evaluate it and determine if it's something you'd like to do also.

HI Ladies,
If you are still looking or trying to find a legitimate business that you can do from home around your family I would love to share with you what I do.
I work part time from home with Full time Income. We are not an MLM, or a Party plan business. I don't sell , take orders, collect money, or deliver anything. We are consumer Direct. We are the only company that does business like this, We have actual trademarked it.
We have been in business for 26 years. With an A+rating from the BBB and have won a torch award from them. This is a real business that you own but have a great team of people to support and help you. The best part is that there is NO New Money. And we can actually help you to save money. And in this tough economy that is why it works. and why we are experiencing such growth even after 26 years. I hope to hear from some of you to at least hear the information. Serious inquiries only. This is not a get rich quick scheme. But it works,True Residual Income. And less than 1/2 of 1% of all households have even heard about us in North America.
Please feel free to connect with me. and I can forward you my website.
All the best
W.

I wish I had an easy answer; I know so many moms who are looking for work to do from home. The only people I know that make a living this way are people with really specialized knowledge (grant-writing, graphic design, programming, etc.) who do freelance work, and people who do direct sales. You can find freelance work online at guru.com; there's lots of competition though. My friend who's a graphic designer does pretty well but she works 24/7, I swear. I've been selling toys from home via an internet site for the last couple of years and work until midnight every night, and Christmas is crazy, plus I really don't make anything off it because the competition is fierce.

I know a few people who've done direct sales for years and do pretty well with it. I poked around a while ago looking at the direct sales companies out there; I'm trying to bring in some extra income too. I was interested in jewelry, since it's easy to sell, the commissions are generally good, and it's kind of fun. I know a TON of Usborne and Pampered Chef reps so the market for that seems saturated around here. I checked out the current companies but didn't really like the jewelry, and I didn't feel like I could sell something I didn't like. Recently, I stumbled across a new direct sales company that's launching in April. I love the jewelry and it's cool that the company is only just starting -- there so much potential. The compensation plan looks good and the company is growing like crazy. So, I'm going to give it a try. I've never done direct sales before but the potential with this one is too big to pass up :-) I'm kind of nervous but it's look like fun, and I hope since the company is new that the commissions will be good; I like that the market isn't already saturated with other reps.

Good luck -- please let us know what kind of opportunities you find!

B.

(I edited my original post because I had put the direct sales company name and it suddenly occurred to me that I shouldn't do that -- sorry, I'm new to Mamapedia!)
