Wondering When My Periods Will Start Again After Baby?

Hi Ladies,

I had my second child in January, and I weaned her from the breast about three days ago. She's almost 7 months old, and I still haven't had a period. Before I was pregnant I could never say that my cycle was a certain number of days long, but I had a period regularly each month. With my first child, I went back on birth control at my 6 week check up, so my periods were kind of "forced" to start up again when he was around 8 or 10 weeks. I am just wondering if anyone has any idea when I should be expecting mine! I am sure that it's probably unique to each of us, but thought a little poll might be helpful.

Thanks,
A.

With my daughter, I was still breastfeeding and got my period about 7 months after delivery. With my son, I started again within a month after I quit breastfeeding. So...I would expect it pretty soon.

Are you on the same birth control that you were taking while you were breastfeeding? If so that could be the issue. I know that the doctor's gave me a different kind of birth control while breastfeeding and then switched to my regular birth control afterwards.

Personally, mine didn't start back up till my daughter was 9 months. I breastfed exclusively and went on the low dose birth control pill around the time she was 3 months. Like you said, we're all different.

Mine started about 4 weeks after delivery, even with breastfeeding/pumping.

Hi A., Probably about 4-6 weeks, maybe sooner. And congratulations on breast feeding as long as you did, you are to be commended. It is a great investment in your child's health, for their lifetime! J. C., Lactation Consultant

Hi A.,

This sounds like something you should consult your OB/GYN about if you have not already. It has been 3 years since my last child was born and I don't remember how long it took for me to start again. However, recently I didn't have a period for 3 months straight for no reason (I was not pregnant) and my doctor said that if I didn't start in the next few weeks that I would need to come in to have my period induced. Luckily I started before my appointment to have that done. Hope all turns out well for you.

I breastfed my daughter excusively for 10 months.. I got my first period when she was 7 weeks old..They came as regular as they did before I had the baby... It was kind of a bummer- most women who nurse do not have periods while they are nursing.

Mine started about 2-3 weeks after stopping breastfeeding. I breastfed for a year and got my 1st period at about 13 months. Be warned, it will be very heavy!

I would expect it within the next month or so. If two months go by, make an appt. with your OB.

I breastfed my son for 13 months and started when he was 8 months and my daughter for 12 months and started when she was 6 months. My girlfriend didn't start until well after her sons 1st birthday, so you never can tell. Hope this helped with your poll! :)
