Should I Be Concerned?

I am wondering when you all had your first cycle after giving birth? My daugter is 8 weeks old and I haven't had any signs of my normal cycle after the intial pp bleeding which stopped at about 4 weeks. I am not BF. I am not worried about being pregnant, just don't know what to expect.

What can I do next?

You did not say if you were regular prior to getting pregnant or not as that will make a difference...Stress will also play a part...Pregnancy makes a body do weird things and with each child it is different...

I nursed - I got mine back after I finished nursing both times.

I have always had very dependable cycles and I breastfed both my sons exclusively. My first son, I had a period at 7 months; exactly one month after he started solid foods and my nursing had decreased significantly. My second son just turned 6 months old and I had my first, although very light, period last week (so a little earlier than with my first son, I had not yet started solid foods with him yet). Enjoy the break while you can!

About 4 weeks after I stopped breastfeeding. And I didn't have cycles at all before I got pregnant, so this was a shocker. Now I get them every 4-5 weeks.

After I had my second baby, 21 months behind the first, it took over a year for my period to begin again. Shortly after that though, I began to see signs of menopause. I went to my OB/GYN for blood tests.

I didn't breastfeed with my first and my period returned after about 6 weeks. Have you been using birth control? If not, then you could certainly be pregnant. I know several women this has happened to and they were very surprised although I'm not sure why because if you're not pregnant and are having sex then you can get pregnant. Why don't you just take a pregnancy test and find out for sure or call your doctor. Good luck and congratulations on your baby and upcoming marriage!

Congratulations on your baby girl and upcoming marriage!

I too have a baby girl that's 8 weeks old. I don't remember how long I bled postpartum, but I had my first period at 6 weeks.

One of my good friend has a son that's almost 3 months old. She got the Depo injection when he was a little over 2 months old and she never had a period postpartum. And now she won't have one due to the injection.

I'd call your OBGYN and run it by him/her just to see what you can expect.

Enjoy that baby!

Like folks have said, I think it varies a lot woman to woman. I bled for almost 6 weeks postpartum, breastfed, and got my first period when my DD was 8 mos old. Do be sure you're not pregnant (when my DD was 8 weeks, I KNEW I couldn't be, barring immaculate conception, LOL!), but otherwise I don't think you need to worry quite yet. Enjoy your little one, and congrats on your engagement!

Because you are not breastfeeding it should be fairly soon, somewhere within 2-3 months at the most. I myself didn't have one for 8 months after giving birth,(woohoo!) but I breastfed. Also, with planning a wedding you may have a little stress (yes, even good stress can do it) may be contributing to your cycle not starting. It takes a little while to get back your body's normal rhythm...give it time and enjoy your beautiful girl!!!

That was one of my questions to my OBGYN as well as many other things that seemed abnormal to me. My OBGYN told me it could take as much as 6 months for your body to return to "normal" after giving birth. She told me she wasn't going to worry until at least that long. It would not hurt to call your OBGYN if it will help you relax a little (worrying/stress can certainly be a factor). I see you are also planning a wedding too. You've got a lot going on, so that could be part of it. Congratulations!

I nursed for a year and didn't get my period until about 14 months after I delivered my baby. It was always very regular before I got pregnant.

Then, I got pregnant and I have a second baby that is 6 months old, and I still haven't gotten it yet. My kids are 2 years apart and I have only had about 3 periods in the past 3 1/2 years!

My first child was not breast fed. I also did not take any form of birth control. It was 5 months before I had my first period.
With my second, I started on birth control pills as soon as it was considered safe at that time, so I started having periods in a short time--due to the hormonal influence (BC products were a lot different several years ago.

It will depend on how long that you bled for. I noticed that mine came back anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks after I quit bleeding the first time.

It is different for everyone - but for a non-breastfeeding women it should come back within 3 months of delivery (usually much sooner). Have you had your 6 week post-partum check up?? Definitely discuss your birth control options. I breastfed all my kids, but I got my period back with each one at 6 weeks post-partum!

I nursed exclusively and didn't have a mens. cycle until baby was 6mths old. I've had friends who have also nursed exclusively, and it didn't return until they weened baby at 1 yr old. SO it can vary. You might call your OB and ask this same question if it will ease your concern.

Are you nursing? I did not have a period until I finished nursing (10.5 months) and then it took about a month or so for it to come.

update: sorry I just noticed you are not BF....well, I am not sure then. Be extra careful unless you want to become PG...my babies are 14 months apart.

With all of my kids, I did not get my first cycle back until a year to 15 months after my last cycle. So that is about 3 months post pregnancy the earliest and I breastfed. It varies from woman to woman.

Hello H.,
I don't think you should be worried, especially if you are breastfeeding. My mom never had a period while whe was breastfeeding, I wasn't as lucky. My daughter is 3 now and It seems like it took a while for mine to start.
I think you are just fine, hormones and periods are so crazy for several months after having a baby. I never did have a normal period after my daughter. I wish you better.
