Which Work Schedule Would You Choose?

4 tens... 3 day weekends are the BEST.

For us we do one Mommy-Day, one Daddy-day, & one family day.

I would do the 4x10 hours. For me, sticking out those 2 extra hours on overtime was easier than waiting out the regular 8 hours. On my 8 hour days, I'd have to wait out 8 hours, but on overtime days, once the 8 hours pass by, you think "wow, only 2 more hours, then i'm out of here." Also, I did have earlier hours, so when I got out it wasn't that late.

When my daughter was still little (until she turned 1) I worked 4-10 hour shifts. It was nice, since she did not have a fixed bed time yet and I could still see her at night plus the extra day of the weekend. It also worked better for me pumping breastmilk (pumping 3 times during a 10 hour shift - during eight hour shifts I found it hard to get two breaks and still get work done).
My daughter also didn't spend 11 hours in daycare (10 + commute) because hubby dropped her off after my shift started.

I switched to 8-5's when she was older for two reasons: one was that my work really wanted me to be there 5 days a week, the other is that her preschool doesn't offer extended hours and hubby cannot drop her off later anymore. I think 11 hours at daycare would be a little too much for her and not worth the extra day at home.

It all depends on your situation. my sil has a 2 hour one way commute and working 4-10's beats working 5-8's by a long shot.

4 10s... IF..... hubby could pick up kids so they were not stuck in day care for 12 hours per day..

the day off would be so nice to do fun things..

For me, it would depend on the situation. Right now, my son sleeps 12-13 hours at night, so he's only awake 11-12 hours a day. 10 hour days, depending on a commute and the timing of them, could mean I don't see him at all for 4 days a week. If I could swing it that I was gone from say, 5 am to 6 pm (assuming a 30 minute each way commute) then I could see him from 6-7:30 pm, I guess I would go with that. If my husband could also be on a 4 day week schedule (different from mine) and my son only had to be in care 3 days a week, I'd do that too. Or if you could work through your lunch, and cut an hour out of your day...

So, I guess what I'm saying is that I would need to see my kids for a reasonable amount of time each day, and wouldn't trade one day at home for missing them 4 days in a row. But if I had older kids who were awake more, and could see them, I'd love the 4x10 option. (Assuming you can get your job done just as well in that time, etc.)

Depends on the kind of work you do. We work the 5 days during the school year and 4 10's during the summer. The days off is great, but if you are interacting with resources and deadlines that are on the 5 day schedule, you are lose a day each week of getting in contact with people outside of your office.

Hi J....for me it's 4 /10 hour days. Having 3 days off a week is better for spending time with your child vs being tired all week. But then again I have always worked "unconventional" schedules and always chose to keep my child care to as little hours as possible even if that ment that I was working oposing shifts to my husband. Even though my kids are all teens I still work in the evenings when my husband is at home. We have always wanted at least one of us at home at any time for our girls and feel that even though we have been blessed with three amazing girls they need as much supervision as teens as they did when they were toddlers. I don't believe that it is "okay" for teens to be "home alone". The world is a nasty place and kids that are alone and able to roam are more likely to fall into the wrong crowd and into trouble. Call me over-protective but it has worked so far for us! Best wishes.

definately 4 10 hr days if you have kids. the extra day off is worth it!

I have done both.....yes it is nice to have a day off with the four ten hour schedule, but it makes for a really long day and not much quality time with kids. Plus if your kids are of age for activities you won't make the after work activities. For example I would not have been able to take my daughter to soccer and swim classes if I was on four tens. Now that I am on five days a week, I have time to get up in the morning work-out and have ample amount of time in the evenings to play with my kids. Granted my day off I would typically spend doing laundry, cleaning ect.....so maybe my laundry sits for a while and there is dust on my tables......oh well. hope this helps

I would love 4 10 hr days, it sounds so ideal & how I live for time away from the office!

4 10 hour days. My husband has worked like this for years and loves it. After being at work 8 hours I would stick it out for another 2 to enjoy that extra whole day off!

Without a second thought I would choose 4 10-hour days. I can only wish that were an option for me!

I would rather work 4 longer days and have 3 days with my child. I would be tired even after an 8 hr work day and would not be as available to my child. 3 days off would feel like more time at home. Can you try one way and change your mind? I hope you find a schedule that works for you and your child.:)

If I had to work, I would prefer the (4) 10 hour days. That would give you 3 whole days to spend with your children, which I think would be more beneficial than 2 days. You figure, if you are already at work for 8 hours, whats 2 more hours going to hurt each day when you know 3 whole days off is in the future.
