When Does Baby Hair Start to Coarsen Up?

Mamas & Papas -

DS is 18 months old. He's got a full head of very fine hair which forms loose ringlets. Its both fine and sparse at this point. Meaning the hairs themselves aren't particularly thick, and the number of strands per inch is pretty small too. When can I expect it to come in thicker? I imagine this varies with each child, but a range, based on your experiences/ observations would be helpful.

Its getting long enough where it is getting into his eyes, and I'm toying with taking him to the barber for a first cut soon, but I am loathe to do it when he's got such thin sparse coverage to begin with.

Thanks a bunch,
F. B.

for all of mine it was around the age of 2 with the exception of my second. With him he came out with a full head of hair that was over his ears and touched the base of his neck. He got his first hair cut at a month old.

If he isn't ready for a full hair cut you could always just trim the hair that is in his eyes for now until he is ready for the real thing.

Get him used to getting haircuts now. My daughter refused until recently, she would cry and squirm so I was trimming it at home. Depending on the type of cut it may look thicker after, you also have to consider the weight of longer hair (even if it is thin) making it look like there is less.

my son had the same, fine curly gorgeous hair. It was a mop top, and he looked so shaggy for Christmas, at that point he was a year old. I got some comments from the fam as to when was I going to cut his hair.
Traditionally for my husband who is from India. All babies, male and female, get there hair shaved to the skin at 1. I compromised and took him to the barber for a close shave. less than one inch. I was SO sad, but with in a week his hair started coming back, and it was surprisingly coarse and very Asian. It seems a little more sparse than before but maybe cause its so short. Since January, he has had it cut 3 times. Each time it comes back quicker and thicker.

It depends on what the hair will be in the end. My older three have thick coarse hair so by the time they were one they had thick coarse hair. My youngest has my hair which is still think but more fine. I would say she was two before she had what I could consider her adult hair.

Thing with Genna is it could have been earlier but unless you child will end up with coarse hair it is hard to tell.

Boys had their first haircuts at one month.
