Went with friends that got me a ticket for my birthday (no parents)
Another question got me thinking...so what was YOUR first concert? How old were you? Did your parents go, too?
What was the band/artist and where was it?
Mine was Bruce Springsteen/Born To Run Tour (when he was still good!) and I think I was 15 at the time. Parents did not attend and it was at The Civic Arena in Pittsburgh, PA. (Showing my age here....lol)

Three Dog Night at the LA Colosseum--- I was 16. We all took a drink of slo-gin, luckily O. of us dropped the bottle and broke it, otherwise it could have been a disaster. The concert was awesome tho "JOY TO THE WORLD, ALL THE BOYS AND GIRLS, JOY TO THE FISHES IN THE DEEP BLUE SEA, JOY TO YOU AND ME".
My 1st concert was a Poison concert with Slaughter opening for them ,LOL. I was in 7th grade and my mom did go but stayed away from us :) It was a an amusement park. Rock on Brett Michaels !!!!!!!!!!!!
love this question! since you are showing your age, i will too ;) ... my first concert was shawn cassidy!!! look at that satin jumpsuit, hot hot hot!!!! haha! i was probably about 12, i went with my friend and her mom.
my first "real" concert, with friends, was prince. and that WAS hot hot hot!!! and i was the O. in the purple satin, omg the blackmail potential of those pictures......
DURAN DURAN!! At the Lakeland Civic Center here in central FL. My Mom took 5 girls (my bestest friends from grade school, 7th or 8th grade) and we all wore the same shirt that we had "airbrushed" and parachute pants!! LOL!
Rick Springfield at Starlight Theater in Kansas City! I think I was 12 or 13. My older brother and an older neighbor friend went with me. It was really good!
A.
Blondie in Central Park. I think it was either 1979 or 1980. I was about 7years old at the time I think.
I sat on my dad's shoulders and danced in the grass.
Mine was Adam Ant and Inxs opened for him. I was 14 years old and went with O. of my best friends at the time. Just the start of many wonderful concert experiences to come.
Classical Music Geek here. The first concert I remember was an all-Tchaikovsky outdoor summer concert, with real cannons for the 1812 overture finale. My friend and I got sidetracked shopping for clothes on the way there. We noticed the time and told the salesgirl we had to leave right away to get good seats for the concert. She asked what concert we were going to and when we told her "Tchaikovsky", she looked a little baffled and replied, "Oh yeah, I think I've heard of them".
New Kids on the Block at Crosley Field in Cincinnati (gone now). I was in the third grade and I went with my mom, my friend, her sister, and her mom. We sat in the nosebleeds and I was DECKED out in NKOTB gear...particularly Joey McIntyre!! We had a blast!!...even if we did have to use binoculars to see anything :)
I went to their concert two summers ago with some girlfriends and it was O. of the best concerts I've ever been to! I plan on seeing them this summer for NKOTBSB!!!!:)
it was amazing. opened with ted nugent, then nazareth, then skynyrd, then aerosmith, who had just come out with toys in the attic.
:) khairete
old S.
Rick Springfield....oh how sad.
:) But I loooovvvvved him.
Faith No More (anyone remember them?) It was at Central CT State U. I was 15 and went with a couple friends. After the show someone tipped us off as to where the tour bus was and we got to meet the band!! We thought it was the most exciting thing ever, but my friend's dad who was waiting to pick us up was not amused. LOL
I saw New kids on the block..I was in 8th grade...OH i was sooo in love..ha ha
Next O. was about a year later..>Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer..I was a freshman.
My mom brought me to both and i am sure laughed her buttt off at us screaming kids "I LOVE YOU JORDAN"
Day on the Green, Oakland, CA, The Police, The Fixx, Thompson Twins, Madness, Oingo Boingo...I was 15, and parents? God no! Just me and my BFF :)
Yay fun question!!!
I was 12 and my first concert was LEIF GARRETT. hehheehhe
My dad almost went crazy having to sit through it with me with all the screaming little girls!!
Mine was NKOTB, Baby! Woo HOO! I was (who am I kidding, still am) so in love with Donnie Whalberg. We were 11 or 12 and I went with my best friend. My mom dropped us off and then fell asleep! LOL! We waited at least 45 minutes by ourselves downtown, scared to death! This was way before cell phones so when we finally found a pay phone in a dark alley we actually saw the fab 5 run by us on the way to their limo. We of course tried to run after them but only saw the limo pulling away. It was terrifiying at the time but hilarious to think of now...and I still tease my mom!
When I was 12 I went to visit my brother's girlfriend in LA (she was attending Pepperdine). When she picked me up from the airport she proclaimed that we were going to see The Grateful Dead that night. I was not a fan, but boy what an experience! I'm sure I was the only person in that arena not on acid!
My first was Rage Against the Machine and I was 17.
Bon Jovi, slippery when wet tour. I was 14. My best friends birthday, her mom came but it was still amazing. And of course we SWEAR he pointed right at us LOL!
Lala-palooza (sp?) I know I am not spelling that right but it's been awhile...
At the Gorge in Washington, Cyprus Hill, George Clinton + his band, Hole, Green Day, + quite a few others I have now forgotten??
I was 16, no parents, a car load of friends, serious road trip to get there and back, mass quantities of drugs...I went to that concert 2 years in a row, the line-up changes every year, and I am thinking I have confused some of the artists above? I am pretty sure Green Day played at the first O. though...like I said...MASS quantities of drugs. Sorry.
I had seen Pennywise and NoFX play at a park in Redding, Ca. the summer before that...but it was during the day and not what I would consider big at all, technically my first concert though! Again NO parents, I was 14 at the time, I think?
My older sister's first concert was quite a few years before that, I think she was 14? Bon Jovi 'Slippery when wet' tour, she went with a friend and a couple of my cousins.
~Don't be thinking I had 'bad' parents...I was completely on my own by then...I hadn't had my parents since I was 7.
Aside from a punk garage bands playing at little clubs and such when I was about 16.... It was Rock Fest with tons of huge bands, No Doubt, Garbage, Bush... But aside from that is was probably the Suicide Machines when I was about 19 or Bad Religion with Modest Mouse (weird I know), and Incubus/Hoobastank in Vegas/Mandalay Bay when I was 21.
All my friends were seeing Boyz II Men, Paula Abdul, Janet Jackson and New Kids and Green Day too when I was younger, I sooo wanted to go, but parents wouldn't allow it. I have never been to a concert with my parents.
I was around 13....
My older brother and his (first) fiance got tickets to Ringo Starr and the All Starr Band.
Peter Frampton was there.
Captain and Tennille! Back in the 70s. I was around eight years old.
Loverboy & Joan Jett
Wow, blast from the past here! Went to Loverboy! My brother took me and my friends and it was awesome! That's right, I said AWESOME! Hahahahahahaha.
nirvana!- it was a pajama party, i was 13, he died like 2 weeks later. No parents, just older brother.
NKOTB- I went ALONE. I was 11, and my parents took me to an amusement park where my sister was working, and low and behold they were having a show that night. My dad paid WAY too much for a scalped ticket, and they waited at the exit for me to come out! Greatest night of a 11 year olds life!
U2 Zoo TV tour with my girlfriends and O. of their older brother's in St. Louis. LOVE me some Bono!
Tiffany. Alpine Valley, WI.
New Kids on the Block opened for her, they weren't even known yet, & it took all of 3 seconds for me to fall head-over-heels for them!!
I was 11 and went to see Madonna (Blond Ambition Tour) at the Palace of Auburn Hills with my uncle and his best friend. My mother was supposed to go and had a ticket, but a wedding came up after the ticket was purchased.
Steve Martin was at alpine valley my senior year of highschool. I think I was 17 a bunch of us piled into a friends dads van and up we went. I had a blast that was in either 79 or 80 I don't remember if we went in spring or fall lol.
I was 19 - Dan Fogelberg.
My daughter was 6 weeks when I took her to an outdoor concert by Percy Sledge.
Madonna, Who's that Girl tour, Chicago. I was 14. It was awesome and I've since seen Madonna 4 times. My step dad stayed with me all night camped out in front of the store selling the tickets. We were second in line and we got awesome seats! Television news crews interviewed us. My uncle ended up taking me to the concert....Level 42 opened for her.
The first O. that I was taken with was Seals and Croft at the Wisconsin State Fair (including that "funny smell" in the air.) The next O. was The Osmonds at the same place but I'm not sure I asked to go. I think that was a family decision.
My first concert I went and got tickets for was Rick Springfield and that hasn't changed. I have tickets for all four nights he'll be here in May. LOVE THAT MAN! :) He NEVER puts on a bad show even when he's sick.
What a GREAT question, Denise! I actually read all of the answers and had so much fun looking at all of the responses, but I didn't see mine. As other have said, I'll be showing my age, but here goes:
Styx. I was a senior in high school and saw them at Vet's Auditorium in Des Moines. The show was a whopping $9.00 and was sold out. No parents, just a friend, her boyfriend, me and my date.
I remember the show was entertaining, but not the rock 'n roll Styx that I was a fan of- I got "Mr. Roboto" instead. Oh well, it was fun.
You never really forget your first anything, do you? Thanks for a great question!
Foreigner (of course that shows my age! haha) I was 14. My Mom took me and a friend, dropped us off and picked us up in the parking lot afterwards. Freedom Hall in Johnson City, TN.
Will I let my daughter go there by herself when she is 14? Doubtful!!
Beach Boys, I was about 15...went with friends. My parents weren't there. It was at Cardinal Stadium in Louisville, KY. :)
Hall and Oates when I was in college. (Showing my age too Denise!!)
My 16 yr old will be going to her first O. alone this summer... Backstreet Boys/NKOTB front row seats American Airlines Center Dallas, TX.
It is her birthday present. She and her best friend are going via limo service for a spectacular evening!
Depeche Mode at 6 Flags at the end of 5th grade. My bff and whole family went to 6 Flags for the day, and my mom went with us to the concert that night while my dad and little brother rode rides. (People are people so why should it beeee you and I should get along so awfullyyyyyy--LOL)
Went to lots of concerts as a kid, but the first concert without a parent was Megadeath opening for Aerosmith at 17, and it was 7 of us (including my bff's 23 year old sister, I guess she was the chaperone), all squeeeeezed into a Chevy Blazer. We went out of state for the show (4 hours away?)and all shared a hotel room, swam all night after the show. SO much fun, but there were so many of us and we were such good friends, noone got into any trouble.
AC/DC at Starplex in Dallas when I was 17. No parents. Fun times . . .
The Police. 1993. Cincy. My two best friends and her stepmother. Oh, man I wore those albums out.
NKOTB! I was 12, I think. My mom went with me (and some friends).
Well, my family is really into music. So my first concert was the Beach Boys when I was like 5!!!
Emerson, Lake & Palmer at merriweather post pavillion with my older brother and his girlfriend...I was 14 ish at the time...and a 'chaperone' for them...
*talk about showing age*
LOL
Michele/cat
I was in 5th grade, my mom took a friend and me to see New Kids on the Block. It was at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse NY, which was almost 2 hours from where we lived so it was a big deal!
I didn't go to a concert alone until college. I went to small venues in my hometown (local artists) but nothing big until I was on my own.
Showing my age (sigh) - the Beach Boys at the Naval Academy in Annapolis. I was 17.
My first was The Monkees (on their revival tour in 1986) with some old bands opening up. I was 11 and in the 6th grade and it was at a football stadium. My mom came. My next concerts were much cooler lol - Ziggy Marley, Aerosmith, GNR, Poison, Skid Row, Bon Jovi, Rolling Stones, etc.
UB40 ,BRILLIANT
In the local nightclub, aged 15yrs,with friends.
WHAM! I was 16yo and went with three other friends. It was general admission, we got up in front of the stage, close enough for me to grap Andrew's shoe, and also close enough that our friend got shoved into the stage and had the wind knocked out of her. It was West Palm Beach, FL.
Christina Aguilera and Destinys Child (this is when Christina just came out and Destinys child wasnt really that famous yet)
Bon Jovi (New Jersey album) at the Meadowlands in NJ. Opening act was Skid Row. No my parents didn't go but my best friends brother took us. I was 16. Stood in line for 4 hours to get tickets. AWESOME!!!!
The Knack at The Hollywood Bowl on Haloween when I was 15. It was sooo cold there that night!!
OH Boy!!! NKOTB (New kids on the block)...Good Lord I was so into them. Went through an entire box of orange tic-tacs when they started singing "Hangin Tough". I was 13 and in 7th grade. Went with 2 of my best friends and O. of their parents. Had the best time :)
Oh and I almost went to Milli Vanilli but got strep and couldn't go!!That concert was right before they got busted so good thing I didn't :)
Tom Petty that I got tickets for my graduation of High School. Me and Hubby drove to Pittsburgh and had a blast. I had just bought my first "new" car a Black Jetta and it was a stick shift... Denise - you should know what fun that could be in Pittsburgh and not knowing how to shift on hills! hahaha.
We had a blast and I still have my ticket stubs. What a great memory and I LOVE Tom Petty and if anything ever happened to my husband and Tom Petty would meet with me.. I would so marry him. lol.
Again.. I LOVE Tom Petty. Hahaha. (possibly borderline obsession here :P )
I was 19 and saw The Dixie Chics and Stone Temple Pilots (separately) in the same summer.
No parents, boyfriends took me and O. was in Texas O. was in California
I was about 14 when I went to see Amy Grant in concert. My parents did not come, I went with our youthgroup from church. It was boring and I kept being told to sit down and our seats were W A Y in the back.
The only other concert I have been to is Harry Connick Jr. and I love him. But, I got a major allergy attack and my eyes swole shut and I couldn't see him. bummer.
L.
Spice Girls! I think I was 11 and it was in Columbus, Ohio.
Yes, My Mom went too. So did my best friend, who by the way 15 years later is still my best friend. :)
Mine was Roxette (remember that sweedish duo?) and I was probably 12. Went with a friend and her mom.
Great / fun question!
NKOTB in Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas 1991 I was 17 and went with my elementary friend, I was so excited and I'm still a blockhead. Will be seeing them in July & AT&T center in S.A. and this time I have floor seats near the stage last time I was nosebleed LOL
Mine was Boys II Men with my older brother, no parents. I was around 13 and my brother was around 20. It was a blast!
Mine was the Wallflowers and Sheryl Crow during my freshman year of college -- I decided to join the concert committee and started doing security for shows (so I went to a LOT of stuff that I would not have bought tickets to otherwise). It was great! This was at the Rec Center at PSU- University Park.
But here is the greatest -- my mom's first concert -- Shania Twain! and my mom was in her FOURTIES at the time (we went as a family)! (versus my sister went to her first concerts as a pre-teen; Color me Bad, NKOTB and Boyz to Men)
LOL - great question - love the answers and some bring back memories! Think went to several concerts back then - Styx, Rod Stewart, Ted Nugent, Bay City Rollers, etc ... then kinda dropped out of shows w/kids!
btw - oldest son was at his first concert - Ted Nugent - still in uerto (sp)!
The summer of 1981 when I was 14, I went to my first two concerts, I don't remember which was first - I saw Olivia Newton John and I saw Hall and Oates.
My friend and I went to see 3 Dog Night a the Cotton Bowl. Rod Stewart was the opening act. I think we were 17.
Charlie Daniels Band... at the Chili Cook-off when I was 7. I grew up in the South and grew up on Southern Rock. My parents (and sister) went and it was a blast! A whole day of outdoor music and good food.
REM at Alpine Valley, WI. in 1990
Amy Grant. I was 6 and knew every.word. LOL!
Metallica with Corrosion of Conformity - I was 17 and went with a group of friends - I was the driver.
I've taken my daughter to many concerts... Huba Stank, Crue Fest (we sat farther in the back so any inappropriate activity she wouldn't see) and many other all day rock/alternative/pop concerts. She'll be 6 y/o in Sept.
We've also gone to many ballet shows, Lord of the Dance, Nick Jr and Disney shows, lots of fun things.
hehehe!
My first concert was and Aerosmith concert (just push play tour) when I was 14. It was AWESOME. Both my mom and dad went (they loved Aerosmith too) and I got to bring along a good freind of mine.
I wore my most "rockin" clothes and my freind and I were allowed to go a few rows forward so we didn't have to stand next to mom and dad the whole time. I wore 6 inch platform boots and MAN did my feet ache on the walk back to the hotel! (just a block away from the venue).
My second concert was later that year and it was a Tom Petty Concert. My parents were in the back, and I got right up near the stage. LOL! We met up at the end of the concert to go home together. My clothes REAKED when I got out, so my mom gave me suspicious looks in the car... but I was a good girl at the concert, hahaha!
I think I was 16 the first concert I attended without an adult around.
Ah... so much fun! Why don't I go to any concerts anymore? Oh well!
-M.
My first concert was Janet Jackson's All For You Tour at the Bulls United Center in Chicago. I was 20 years old then. I'm ten years older now.
Janet Jackson, Rhythm Nation tour, 1990. I was 17 and on a trip with my high school band. I grew up in WAY north MN (very rural) and we "didn't get out much". Our teacher wanted us to experience as much as we could in our trip so we saw a concert at the Ordway (St. Paul Chamber Orchestra), went to a Twins game, ate Japanese food, and saw Janet Jackson (and crammed in 3 concerts of our own). In hindsight, he was a great teacher, and maybe a little bit nuts. :)
J.
I went to a lot of local band concerts when I was 14. Not sure of the names. My first real concert was when I was 16 and me and my friend went to go see Everclear.
Well, my first concert was Motley Crue and I was 24 and 4 months pregnant! Hubby suprised me with tickets for Christmas :o)
Mine was the B52s, I was 13 and won the tickets on the radio (must not have had age requirements in 1989?!), and my dad dropped me and a friend off then was back outside when it was over. There was a funny smell in the air and I asked my dad what it might be, turns out it may have been MJ? I was too young to know or care what that was thankfully :)
NKOTB was my second concert with my sister and a friend, same drop off situation. Sooo fun! I've seen them every time they've come back since, including twice in a year in the last two years and again this summer! And I happened to meet Donnie at the Seattle international film festival once too..
Technically it was Yawny, but since I was dragged by the hair to that O., it would be Nsync!!!!!!!!!!!!! Man I wish they were still around!
New Kids on the Block. 1988. Richfield Colliseum. Best Concert Ever! =D
Rolling Stones at the Meadowlands. I was 15. My mom made me go with my (very cool) uncle who was ancient at the time (I think he was 25 - and in love with Tina Turner who opened the show).
I can't remember which O. I attended first but I went to the first Lallapalooza when I was 17, in Lake Fairfax, VA. Went with my best friend (at the time) and no parents allowed. But sometime that same summer I went to see Material Issue at the OLD 9:30 Club in Washington. Such a good band. I might still have some of the guitar picks that Jim Ellison tossed out to the audience...
Thanks for the fun question!
I am 25 and have yet to go t my first concert
I don't remember how old I was, maybe 12-13, but it was Tiffany with NKOTB opening. My mom and dad took a friend and I and she got 13th row seats through her work. Great question - fun memories!
I think I was about 15 also. No parents. It was a small concert. Can't remember the gal who played, but other bands included Toadies and Everclear. Fun times.
