It might be the diapers. My sister-in-law's daughter had the same problem with White Cloud diapers. It could also be something you fed her that she may be alergic or sensitive skin. My baby can't eat prunes or sweet potato it leaves a rash almost immediately after #2. Just try Desitin or Buttpaste. If it does not work then you might need a prescription from you pedi.

antifungal with aquaphor on top

Aquaphor is a little pricy, but as you can see from the recommendations on here, it is worth it.

My son had a similar issue around the same age...I went to the pediatrician and after I tried Budreau's Buttpaste (decent, but didn't do the trick), I still had issues. The Dr.prescribed an anti-fungal cream. That worked a little, but did not get rid of it.
Here's what worked:
I went back and they prescribed a stronger antifungal cream (Mupirocin 2%)and a powder (Nystatin Topical Powder USP 100,000 USP Units per gram) to sprinkle on after I put on the cream (both were done after each diaper change). I had to do this for about 1-2 weeks. The problem did come back about 3 times over a 1yr period(each time, I resolved it with the same method as above). I hope that helps!
Blessings,

Have you ever tried Triple Paste? It is a medicated diaper rash cream that is wonderful. Our Pedi told us about it. You can find it at Target and BRU.

It might be a 'fungal' infection or rash, which will not heal with any diaper rash creams. Try using Lotrimin, it 's for athlete's foot typically, and I freaked at first when my doctor said to use it, but if it is fungal it will clear right up.
And yes, avoid the wipes, I used to use Viva paper towels, they are soft and I would use warm water to wet them. If I forgot to take them with me I would rinse the wipes out several times before using them.
My kids could only use pampers if I used huggies diapers they would break out in rashes constantly.

perhaps it is a yeast or acid rash? our pediatrician suggested for us to mix aquaphor, mylanta, and an over the counter antifungal cream together and use that. The aquaphor provides a barrier for moisture, the mylanta combats the acid, and antifungal takes care of the yeast. It is a homemade "triple paste," if you will. I mix some up as needed.

NO vaseline. Try the original Desitin - not creamy. If that doesn't work, make a doctor appointment - they have prescription meds for diaper rashes. If that doesn't work, make an appointment with a dermatologist - our dermatologist is the one who prescribed the medication to clear up our rash.

Well... everyone has answered you, so I will put in my 2 cents. First, yes stop using the wipes and just use a wet cloth to clean. After cleaning, make sure you dry her off with a clean cloth. I got to wear I was using baby wash cloths for this. I really like Burt's Bees diaper cream. It has calamine and lavender in it which soothes the area as well as keeping out moisture. Be very generous with the cream where she is white all over down there. Once the rash has gone away, you don't have to continue the cream or the water, just find sensitive wipes and make sure you dry her properly before applying the new diaper.

Things to note, try to gently clean. The poop gets more sticky at this stage and can cling to the bottom more. Over wiping can cause the skin to get raw. Addition of liquid in the wet cloth helps to break the poop down better and allow for a more gentle removal. Also, pee is sterile. You don't have to use moist wipes to clean off pee. You can pat it dry with tissue and put on a new diaper like you do yourself. This reduces the number of times moisture has to come in contact with her skin.

If the rash continues, she may have a fungal issue. This is not as big a deal as it sounds. You just buy Lotramin AF and apply it to the rash. It kills the infection in a few days and you are back to normal.

I hope she gets back to her normal self soon. :)

E.,
It is not always how quickly she is changed. It could be something in her diet. Perhaps a new food, or a food she has taken a liking to that has too much acid in it. Teething, especially molars can cause some nasty rashes.

Or if you have changed diaper brands recently, it could be a reaction to that. I think pampers or huggies has a sensitive skin type, perhaps trying that.

Might try cleaning her with cotton balls and baby oil or a mixture of baking soda and water, perhaps trying some antibacterial cream on it. May have to call her doctor and get a prescription cream

I second the fungal issues, Lotrimin and the "ick" factor. The great thing is IF it is fungal you should see results in a couple days. If you don't, you can rule it out.
For my children they seemed to act up around the cooler months. Probably all those layers trapping warmth from their little bodies.

My baby had the same problem around 8 months - it ended up being that he was allergic to the acid in anything with apples or pears. If your baby is eating these foods or even tomato based foods I would remove them from her diet and see if it clears up.

Also, we put him in organic diapers to sleep in. During the day he wears Pampers.

Hope this helps!

I'm a BIG fan of aquaphor. Mainly because my kids cried and cried when I put the other diaper rash creams like desitin or butt paste on it. Aquaphor ALWAYS got rid of the regular diaper rash. And it doubled as moisturizer for dry skin. For fungal rash (aka yeast infections) get some monistat 7 day cream. Generic brands are fine. You're looking for 2% Miconazole Nitrate. Don't get the 3 day brand b/c you get a tiny little tube of the external cream. Apply liberally on all effected areas after thoroughly cleaning and pat drying the area. My daughter tends to get a yeast infection after going number 2 so I know how frustrating it is. Good Luck.

Hi Ericka,

Try a little bit everything, I use Earth's Best products or Seventh Generation on pampers.

Mustella, for bath products-- hair and body, lotion etc.

When I used Dr. Smith's Ointment in small bottle, that was great and also I tried Balmex that was ossom too.

What has your Doctor said?, I am sure there are natural organic remedies too. Try giving her probiotic smoothie, that helps with Digestive System I see a big difference for my child. The brand I use is Lifeway Kefir culturedMilk Smoothie Probiotic Strawberry flavor.

You May want to do a allergy test for foods and other allergies also. Good luck ok

Hands Down Cure (unless it is fungal): a nice baking soda bath will neutralize any acidity left on the skin, sooth the burning and clear up the rash by morning. Works everytime! The only exception is if there is a fungal infection, which will require physician treatment... these are fairly rare.

A tablespoon in a baby bath or a 1/4 cup of soda in a regular tub should do the trick.

When my son was a baby, he got an awful diaper rash that would not go away and even started to blister. Out of desperation (b/c I bought all the diaper cream brands already and tried them all) ... I called my ped's office, the nurse line -- they told me to put a liberal thick coating of AQUAPHOR ointment on top of the rash, covering the entire rash... then top that with a coating of any diaper rash cream.
It worked! By the next diaper change, a big improvement -- then the next one - all gone. So now we keep Aquaphor in the house for all skin problems. It's a water barrier ointment.
Some stores have it on the baby aisle next to the diaper ointments, vasoline or they have it with the hand lotions.

Hello Erica,
Diaper rash is caused by a fungal infection. You may treat it with regular on the counter antifungal creams like Lotrimin AF. Dry the baby's skin and use the antifungal every time when changing and overnight. Also make sure you keep the baby without a diaper on air regularly. Fungus loves moist warm environments. It may take about one week to get rid of it with Lotrimin.
However, I had the best results with Calendula oitments (I made my own-which is the best) but also available at Whole Foods stores. It makes miracles and the home made stuff treats the rashes overnight (You may find the instructions to make the oitment in the book of Maria Treben's "Health Through God's Pharmacy").

I hope this helps.
Good luck.

My daughter use to have xtreme diaper rashes on occassion due to her severe gastric reflux. Most over the counter items worked ok. You get what you pay for! I found the best thing was to soak her in a warm bath (if/when it started to be the worst)...#2 NO vaseline!!!! it is made of petroleum and blocks in moisture. #3 Air dry if possible. #4 try not to use wipes if you do -rinse them out or wet warm washcloths are the best. #4 a MUST HAVE Arbonne Herbal Diaper Rash cream w/ zinc & botanicals that are healing to the skin esp for eczema, etc. Dont leave home w/o it! and it is pure. safe. beneficial. It last about 3months! When you email me or call me I could give you 10% discount...(butt paste works well too) But try these methods...Also, you can pat dry her bottom with corn starch...Bless her heart. Call if you have any questions. Best.

I had the same problem when my youngest was little. I used the $50 an oz. cream and it got worse. My ex's grandmother told me to try powered laundry starch. IT WORKED! She had welts and they dissappeared over night. I never used anything else again. Faultless is the brand I used. It really does work and is thicker than baby power so none floats in the air. Just pat it on the diaper area and it will work.

Let me know how it works for you.

It might be a yeast infection. If that is the case then any of the "white" rash cream that have the zinc oxide in them are feeding it. We switched to A & D ointment for all of our Diaper changes and when we had a yeast infection the the Dr. prescribed an anti-fungal that we would use.
When we switched to the A & D ointment it was much better.

My babies always broke out in diaper rash as well. The ONLY thing that ever worked for them was Boudreaux's Butt Paste. Every time i changed their diapers I would clean them really well, then slather on Boudreaux's Butt Paste, and then i would put a light coating of powder on top of that to help keep it dry. I was amazed how quickly their rash would go away.

There are a number of reasons your baby can get a diaper rash, could be due to something in the diet - it happens and it happens to everyone at some point so don't feel like you've done something to cause it. My son got it real bad (for no reason) and I used Dr. Smith's - sometimes you have to ask the pharmacy for it and sometimes it is on the shelf (it is not prescription but it is a little more expensive). Don't use vaseline or Lotrimin until the dr advises and don't use wipes until it clears up (just rinse his little hiney in the bathtub). Everything hurts when it is that raw so if you can keep her "exposed" (no diaper, just wrap a towel around her if she isn't too mobile) it will help also. Good luck!

I'm betting on at least 1 (or possible combination) of 3 things: YEAST, food allergies, or reactions to chemicals you are using on your daughter. I would take her to her pediatrician to get the correct diagnosis. If it is a yeast infection (and my oldest son got them in CLOTH diapers!), or a reaction to chemicals, I can help you choose SAFER alternatives to use around your house, and on your daughter. Food allergies can exhibit themselves in a variety of ways, and the development of a "diaper rash" is one of them.

Hope she gets better soon!

I am a pro at this one... change diaper as often as you can and do not let them sit in it for a long time. I made the mistake of letting my little one just fall asleep in the stroller without checking her diaper first and we were at the zoo. Because it was a warm day she had the worst diaper rash. I put Desitin on it - A LOT! Make it look like whip cream then applied a bunch of corn starch. I did this every hour or when I changed her diaper. Then made sure to apply the same remedy right before bed. Cleared up in a few days. Also, I used egg yolk to make a "skin" one time and applied baby powder (corn starch) on top of that as well. That cleared up over night for the most part. My husband thought it sounded nutty, but it worked. Good luck!

Hi E.,

Wow! What a WONDERFUL mom you are! I always thought I was the best mom in the world, but I must admit, my babies had to wait a little longer than a minute or 2 .... (well, not ALL the time, mainly if we were out somewhere or in the car and it wasn't convenient to stop).

Is the rash all over .... or mainly just where the tee tee and poop are?

You didn't mention what kind of diaper she wears: cloth or disposable. I'm wondering if she is sensitive to the material/plastic/rubber, etc. What might appear to be a rash, could be an allergic reaction. You could try some benadryl cream.

You may have to change brand or go to cloth diapers for a bit.

Good luck! Please keep us posted!

My two cents: I would suggest you stop using diaper wipes, at least at home. There are so many chemicals on them, and maybe your child is reacting to them. Use good oldfashioned water & Ivory soap (for poops). Buy Bounty paper towels (they are the best) and warm one up at the sink prior to changing your child. I also don't think you should be using vaseline - that holds any moisture on the skin in and the skin can't breathe.
