I am not particular. I'll use whatever. my diva 18 yr old is particular. shes turning 19 this month and mentioned she'd like a flat iron or curling iron for her birthday. she wants ones that get exremely hot and dont tug on her hair. her hair is ridiculously long, and cheap Revlon types take her a really long time to get ready. She had a chi flat iron and loved it, but it recently broke. i dont have a chi budget! what type do you have? Do you love it? Would you reccomend it and why?

So What Happened?

side note - our big outdoor flea market has chis for $40. I offered to take her last weekend to get one and she said.....hmmm, i loved my last one, but it only lasted 2 years, so, I'm not sure. so........if Chi is poor quality, doesnt last, but does a great job on her hair, do I go ahead and buy that one? Is there one better than Chi, does the same job, but lasts longer? I dont want her to be disappointed.
I know I'm painting a picture of a spolied brat, shes not. This is the only thing that she has ever showed such finickyness about. She actually suggested I just get her velcro rollers because she doesnt want me to spend money on her.

I'm a hairstylist and I have a chi. Paul Mitchell has a great one as well, (it may even be better than my chi).

( I usually am against frequent flat iron usage, but I just got a haircut that requires I flat iron my hair, not happy about it!)

If she uses a good heat sealer, like Paul Mitchell's Seal n Shine or any type of thermal protectant spray while she's ironing, and if she uses thin sections and combs it as she irons, then it wouldn't take as long or tug/damage her hair... but yes, on the cheaper versions, having to repeatedly iron will be more difficult and damaging.

Sometimes, you can find them for cheaper on ebay. ALSO, she's 18.. at that age, I had to buy my own stuff like that.

My sister has wais-length curly hair and swears by her Chi. If it's a "real Chi" and it's well cared-for, it should last a very long time. My sister has had hers for at least 7 years (got it as a HS grad gift from my other sister). I have short hair, so I use the cheap one but when I use hers it really is so much better!

flat irons are not items that willlast for years and years. I would expect a little longer but if she uses it daily and has long hair I can see how it would happen. I use and love my Remington wet to straight but with got 2b heat protection. when my hair was butt length I got longer use from wide flat irons Chi's are mostly 1 inch wide it's better for her to use 2 inches or more with a ceramic plate.

Chi all the way. You get what you pay for.

BTW, no flat iron is made to last for years and years. My daughter does not use hers daily and they average 2-2 1/2 yrs.

You can get deals at JC Penneys, Bed Bath and Body, etc

Chi. It's all I use.

If it only lasted her 2 years she either got a faulty one or wasn't taking proper care of it. I have had my Chi for over 3 years, and I know others who have had theirs for over 5 years and counting.

I have a $30 ceramic flat iron that is 2 or 3 inches (I don't remember). My hair is at the bottom of my shoulder blades (mid back) and is THICK and wavy. The key to flat irons is you have to get ceramic (I'm not sure whether they sell them without anymore lol, it was new to me when I was growing up) and for her long hair it needs to be wide so she can do more at a time. My flat iron heats up HOT. I have to have a flat iron that is hot or it doesn't work. I've never had a problem with tugging unless it is a really cheap flat iron. I love mine just because it gets super hot and does the job really good. My hair is frizzy if I air dry it most of the time and with this flat iron it leaves my hair looking glossy and smooth. I would go with a flat iron, I don't know if she knows this but you can curl your hair with a flat iron :)

I saw a Chi 2 inch ceramic flat iron for $60. Not sure what your budget is. You could also try and go with a Paul Mitchell. If you can, why not split the price with a relative and it be from both of you? It doesn't make it any less special :) If it does (I know sometimes it's hard sharing a gift) you can buy some professional shampoo/conditioner or something and that be from just you :)

Good Luck

Check Marshals. I saw Chi's there for $59 an $69 yesterday - and they were the cool artwork designed ones.

Flat irons. Ugh.
If I never see another flat iron, it will be too soon.
My daughter was blessed with beautiful curly hair, natural ringlets, and only until recently did she quit straightening her hair.
I swear she went through a flat iron every other week, so the cheap ones aren't worth it.
It's just money down the drain.
Ceramics are definitely the best and worth the investment. They last longer and don't burn your hair.
My daughter's hair is so much happier and healthier since she gave up her flat iron addiction, but I totally understand having a daughter who thinks the world will end without her flat iron.
Maybe you can try a beauty supply store in your area.

Best wishes.

Coming from someone who is VERY particular (tried to break that habit for years, but no), I would rather go without than not have the EXACT thing I'm wanting. It's FAR preferable to me to save for what I really want, than to have an affordable substitute. ((I saved 2 years for my MacBookPro, rather than spend half the money on a MacBook, or a quarter for a PC... I'm currently 1.5 years into a 3 year bid to save for my new camera... I STILL don't have a watch... and I'll wear my hair curly, rather than straighten it with a dryer that irks me, I won't buy this, or that, or this... but would instead rather wait and save)).

The Chi has features no other straightening iron has. Period. It's not MY favorite (I need 430 degrees and up), but if it's her favorite... AND she's particular, I wouldn't get a substitute.

Instead... how about a gift certificate TOWARDS that flat iron? That way, you pay what you can afford, and she gets what she wants :) Win/Win

Option 2: eBay or Craigslist.

I have a Paul Mitchell one that I LOVE !! I've had it for maybe 4 years ...... it gets Super HOT Super Fast (goes up to 400°C) and works Great - no tugging or hairs getting stuck in it anywhere. It was Over $100 tho, but I really think it was Worth the $$.
