S.S.
my husband makes it easy. He goes on to Amazon and creates a wish list. I get him some things off the wish list (usually its dvds) and some suprises (like books that he has mentioned wanting to read)
I never know what to get him! We've been together 11 years, and it never gets any easier. What do you do for your hubby?
Thanks, everyone. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who struggles with this. Some of you are really thoughtful and creative! (None of you are "lame"!)
I think he might have created a wish-list for himself on Amazon... thanks for reminding me!!
Addition: We could use a new TV for the family room. If we do that, it could count as gifts for both of us! Thanks again.

We're pretty lame. He has a never-ending list of stuff that he wants to buy, so around this time of year he starts wheeling and dealing and at some point I'll hear "well that will be my Hanukkah present" and that's it. On top of that I'll buy something lame that he can open up - a DVD, piece of clothing...one year he wanted his own bath towel that no one else is allowed to touch so I got him the biggest, fluffiest one I could find.
I usually ask for something fitness-related. Last year he got me a gift card to a running store so I could finally get a good pair of running shoes, the year before it was several pairs of running pants/shorts and tops. I have a hard time dropping $55 on a pair of running pants but if I get them as a gift, it's OK LOL.
Last year I wanted to give my husband his glory days back. We were at a friend of his house and he was pulling yeabooks and newsclippings out and they were so happy. My husband doesn't have any of that, it was all lost in a fire. So, I ordered a copy of his old high school yearbook. I contacted his hometown newspaper and got a cd with the last 2 years of his time in highschool on a cd. I printed all sorts of articles about him and pictures and made him a scrap book. He's so proud to show it all off.
This year, I dont know yet. I've ordered a vintage hat from his Navy Ship the USS Nimitz. He always wants clothes and cologne, but i try to always get something sentimental and tickets to something we can do together.
my ex one year i got him flying lessons, one year i made a treasure hunt and ended at a gazebo a block away and in it was a xmas tree (already there) and a ball on it that had a pic of a mountain house and then a present under the tree with photos of it and a note that him, i and our friends were staying at a cabin together (he always wanted to do that) and then one year passes to go painballing for an entire weekend and camping with his best friend
We always pick out something together. One year it was a new mattress, one year it was a new camera, one year it was a GPS......
This year will be stuff for our new motorhome, pots and pans, sheets and stuff.
I do put stuff in his stocking.....usually candy and cologne.
i usually take him to the mall and buy him 2 pairs of quality/stylish jeans (diesel are his fave). they're a good staple in his wardrobe and he'll never venture out to buy them on his own, hence this 7 year running tradition.
We are pretty poor and lame, so it's usually one gift. So during Christmas, we take each other shopping. We go and pick out a new Fossil watch or a nice new pair of jeans or shoes... whichever we need that year.
But, I prefer buying handmade gifts, so if I can find something affordable and quality on etsy, we will do that first. This year, I'm thinking of a new handcrafted leather wallet or fancy handbound journal, my husband is desperate for one!
What are his hobbies? My hubby has an Amazon wish list of all the books he wants. He also always wants running clothes, smart wool socks, the latest ski gear or triathalon or biking gear. He has a million maps and one year I got him a beautiful wood map table (which is now our coffee table) w map drawers to hold them. He loves geeky computer type gifts. I will get him something he needs...new shirt for work or new bathing suit or fleece jacket. I know he likes to buy the sporty style so I shop at REI for him. In his stocking I put running gels and snacks. He also LOVES gummy candy. I notice what he likes when we are out and about. He just saw this cool tube shaped table lamp made out of a hollowed out quartz rock and he loved it. I have that in mind for xmas for him. He loves quirky modern kitchen stuff too. He loves fancy coffee. He makes his own beer so I can always buy a gift certificate for beer supplies. I have the opposite problem as you - too many ideas. I have your problem when it comes to my dad though. He has no hobbies. He does not read. I never know what to get him - no one does.
Last year I bought tickets to see one of our favorite comedians, it was a New Year's Eve show in San Francisco and we had a blast, he loved it!
It's hard, I know! My husband surfs, so he usually gets a new pair of board shorts. I also like to find one or two funny t-shirts (Urban Outfitters usually has some good ones). He's into music, so a CD or two or Itunes gift card; maybe a concert DVD. He loves scotch so sometimes I buy him a really good bottle and one year threw in some scotch glasses. Got him some UGG fleece slippers last year which he looooves and a super cozy robe ... this year might get him a magnetic backgammon game ...
My hubby loves books and has an Amazon wish list that I can shop off of which is nice. Last year I got him a nice Keurig coffee/tea/hot chocolate maker. He loved that gift. I had got him a bunch of K-cups of the hot chocolate and tea (he's not a coffee drinker) which he has really had fun with. This year I've decided I'm getting him a Rosetta Stone language learning system which I know he'll flip out over so I'm excited. A couple of years ago, I did Shutterfly books of our kids which he loved and I also gave him a crate full of Fre non-alcoholic wines (we don't drink). Then a lot of standard things like clothes, Orginis 'man' charcoal soap, a new razor, cologne etc...
What? I am supposed to buy him a gift?? LOL, I tell him I am gift enough since I can never figure this out either.
I ask him and he tells me. Simple. =)
Same here. We have been together over 20 years. Every time I try to get him something he has mentioned, he beats me to it. Very frustrating. I usually just try to get something special from the kids. I was trying to put off thinking about it but gotta start soon.
Last year, I bought him a kindle. This year, I'm buying us tickets to a Broadway show.
I've started with clothes for my DH this year. The only way that guy dresses decently is if I get him stuff. Otherwise he's in torn jeans and old t-shirts.
I usually go for stuff that might be harder to find that I know he'd think was cool. Ex: he loves soccer, so right now I'm looking for memorabilia for his favorite team in the last World Cup.
He loves the Yankees, so last year I bought him dirt from the old Yankee Stadium before they tore it down.
He has every gadget under the son, so I try to go for hobbies that he can't easily find on his own.
I hate shopping for my husband. Last year money was a little tight, since we travelled from Texas to Maryland for a week and half, so I got him a charger where he could charge his blackberry, his iphone, my itouch and my ebook all in one. It wasn't glamorous, but he uses it everyday. This year if everything goes right, he will be getting the promotion he's been after for over a year. He keeps saying he needs an iPad to make his job easier and I always tell him no. If he gets the promotion and Best Buy runs their no interest for 18 months he will be getting an iPad.
After reading all these responses...I kind of feel like the PA Dutch...plain and simple. There's an old Quaker song called, "Tis a Gift to Be Simple" and that fits us both to a "T." My hubby's into being practice; so if I just get him something just for fun, he has me return it to the store. That means I get him tools, sweats, socks, underwear, and flannel shirts. We do all our splerging on the kid and one really big gift for the house that everyone will use. One year it was a TV.
Most of the time I get him things I know he needs to replace. Like T-shirts and underware, socks. So the kids feel they got him something. When I see he really wants something we get it, and I wrap it with kids and he acts surprise. LOL I buy my x-mas gift and he wraps it with the kids. He may throw in something extra I don't know about. But we really don't tress over it. If we really want something we buy it. Its more for the kids, and they are happy when they see us open our gifts. So to answer your question, something small. :)
After 24 Christmas' together I still love shopping for him. I go nuts on his birthday but we scale back at Christmas now that we have our son. Our son opens EVERYTHING so we pretty much just buy for him now.
Normally we would buy something for the house. I always think of the "Brady Bunch" episode where they are competing for the green stamps and the girls want a sewing machine and the boys want a row boat. At out house, he wants kitchen things and I want eletronics. We're SO weird!
On lean years....not much a card, a stocking with his favorite treats. When I plan ahead....I've gotten a 1/18" scale model of his Nissan 350 race car ($15) and then took it to our vinyl guy ($125)and had him replicate the graphics on our car down to the tiniest detail & sponsor decals. I put it back in the original box and wrapped it up under the tree...boy was he amazed! He has shown it to everyone and has it proudly on display in his office. Also, one time a swivel bar stool with checker flag seat for the workbench in his shop, jeans, jeans, more jeans, (he always needs them), the latest and greatest Craftsman tool to come out, certificates to get his car detailed, a case of his favorite root beer that we can only buy when we visit Williamsburg, VA. Can you tell....he's a car guy! Oh....for father's day...ALWAYS a mini album with pictures throughout the year of just our daughter or our daughter and him, and this year a Mr. Beer microbrew kit which he loves! Good luck, have fun!
ETA: On EBay..I have been able to find vintage photos of cars that he is in to, or tracks that he likes to race. He has a bunch I'd Porsche 944s, so one year I bought him a shirt and hat from an EBay seller ...the shirt is screen printed, and the hat is embroidered..."Porsche ....there is no substitute". He loved the navy shirt and khaki hat so much that the next year I got him the same shirt in grey and the hat in navy, and the next....navy shirt again and red hat! He loves loves loves them! If your guy is into any one kind of hot car or team, you can find all kinds of logo stuff out there...hats, key chains, shirts, jackets, etc.
