Okay, so none of us have the body we had prior to kids... After baby #1 I was still looking okay and could still fit into my pre-baby jean, but after baby #2 my shape totally changed. Since #2 is now 2.5 years old, I guess I own this extra weight--and more challenging--the distribution of it. You know--the rounded belly, a bit of stretched out skin that never snapped back, and resulting "muffin top" once I put jeans on. The next size up doesn't fit...clearly too big and ridiculous gap in the back. So how do you hide the muffin top? I just bought about 5 pair of Levi's with 1% spandex. They looked great in the dressing room so I stocked up...but absolutely don't hold their shape. Wear them for an hour and they're bagging in the front--not holding anything in and starting to look saggy at the crotch. Totally unflattering--I hike them up only to have them sag right back down the moment I walk. A size smaller might not slide down, but hello...too tight to squeeze into and the muffin top would spillith-over even worse! So what holds it all in without spilling over and without looking like I've got something weird or extra 'down there'...LOL. Different material? More spandex? A certain brand (I've tried several others too...just picking on Levi's cause I just dropped so much cash on them)? My price range is about $50 max per pair. I would go a bit higher if they made me look rockin' and held up!
My shape--very hippy and saddle bags with a relatively small waist. Huge tree trunks for legs...skinny jeans look like a complete joke on me and anything that hugs all the way down makes my saddle bags stand out even more. Straighter legs and boot cut are better on me for sure.
I'm in school right now so I can't afford to spend a lot on clothes. I love my sweetheart skinny jeans at old navy--they are cheap and look great. I didn't think I could wear skinny jeans but these look great. My legs are skinny but I need some help in the waist area...these jeans do not give me a muffin top because they sit at the waist (I can't do low-rise). But they are still young and modern looking. But you do have to try on every single pair as old navy is notorious for sizing incosistency, particularly between different washes.

Go to the GAP and try their "Perfect Bootcut". The rise is a little higher and the waistband is a little thicker and acts like a girdle. Also try their Always Skinny-High Rise. I just bought these a couple of days ago and they are great b/c the rise is high enough to hold in everything but they still look cool and so far do not stretch and are totally comfortable.
I am guessing you don't want to go premium if you find Levis to be expensive but if you did there are a couple good ones there too.

I like the Style & Co. jeans at Macy's--that's all I've bought for the last several years.
Also, if your waist size is not in proportion with your hip size, and you have minimal sewing skills, you can often create a partially elasticized waistband. On the inside of the waistband, at both sides (roughly where your arms hang down), cut a vertical slit about an inch long. Feed 1-inch-wide waistband elastic through from one slit to the other. On one side, sew through the ends of the elastic and both layers of the waistband (do it a few times to be sure the elastic will stay). Put the jeans on, and pull the other end of the elastic through until the waistband feels snug (for me, it's usually a couple of inches less than the measurement from slit to slit). Take the jeans off, and sew the other end of the elastic in place. This holds it in just enough that I don't feel as if the waistband gaps.

"Not Your Daughter's Jeans" is an actual brand - you can look up on-line where they are available. They have a stretchy panel in the front and they help flatten your tummy some and make you look a little thinner. I've had mine for a couple of years now and I love them.

i'm sorry i didn't take the time to read all the responses so i apologize if this is a repeat. "not your daughter's jeans" have been great for me. i'm short but also not size 2 after 2 kids. the waist is higher then my Gap jeans which i loved, and they hold my belly in better. i have the black "jeans" which aren't very jeany, but fit like a glove and my husband loves how they look on my bum, even after wearing all day. i recommend highly. i'm not sure how pricey they are as they were a gift to me. good luck!

Gap has a huge selection of jeans, seeming to fit lots of body styles. I've always had luck with them, even though my body has changed after kids. Once you find a good fitting pair, you can buy almost any pair of theirs in that style. Some I've tried are boot leg, curvy, and long and lean. I'd stay away from too much of a low rise since that accentuates a "muffin top"!

Hi
From your description of your body I think we are the same. I have had luck with Old Navy jeans believe it or not. the style is "the diva". I don't wear super tight jeans. I bought 1 pair of skinny, which are not super skinny. I agree that for our figure boot cut is best. And I know what you mean about the gap in the back. I just wear a belt.
Good luck

Wrangler makes a Q-baby that I LOVE. I always have trouble because my waist is smaller than the ba-dunk-a-dunk. Really nice waistband, stretchy, and reasonably priced too.

The way to get rid of the muffin top is to get a jean with a higher rise. Not Your Daughter's Jeans have a good selection of jeans with a rise at the natural waist. They do have spandex but they don't sag and they are very flattering. I bought my first pair a couple months ago and I am sold on them. Always go with dark washed denim. Good-luck!

I got some jeans that fit well at Costco for like 16 dollars. They are Gloria Vanderbilt brand, have more room in the leg, some stretch in the denim and a more fitted waist. I think I'm similar in body type to you, and these worked great for me. Not a fancy brand... but they fit well.

I'm going though the same exact thing right now. I'm so close to my ideal weight again and not to far from a vague semblance of my waist measurements but everything is in a different place after 3 kids. One thing I'm finding is they look nice until I sit down. I'm sorry but I do not need to be showing 2-3" of panty when I sit..and I'm wearing bikinis. Old Navy was really bad about that..forgot to sit down before buying them. Glad I remembered before taking the tags off. I tried both the skinny and sweetheart. Gap..dang that was a funky fit! New York & Co weird fit too. I'm 5' 9" which makes things even harder for me as I need talls.
I wish anyone would make pants without stretch because that seems to be my worse enemy in my search.
But..with that said..I just bought some jeans from Target that really aren't too bad as things go. Fit 1 or 2 are a good waist height. All they had was fit 1s in the talls and they're too baggy in the hips and thighs for me personally(my "trouble area" is right below my belly button) but they only carry the fit 2 online in talls. In these jeans I was able to buy my prepregnancy size and they fit pretty good. Itty bitty bit of muffin top as I have that bit of pooch that still needs to go but it didn't show with a belt and a slightly longer shirt.

Well, I love Lucky jeans. The sweet 'n low style has a higher rise so it holds in muffin top but isn't so high it looks silly. Lucky jeans STRETCH so if you do buy a pair buy the snug ones. Also, go to the store and have one of the people who work there help you - they are SOO helpful. 2. - have you checked out Lilac? They are both maternity and non maternity - they have a tummy trimming panel built in and when you crouch down you see that not undies. The styles are cute! They are on zulilly right now for cheap...
Lastly, I have a rule about jeans. Don't be cheap. They are totally a wardrobe staple and 1 great pair of jeans is worth more than 5 mediocre pairs of jeans. Nobody cares or will notice if you always wear the same jeans - especially if you radiate confidence while wearing them. Splurge and love the pants you will wear 75% of the time.
Good luck! A jeans mission is fun and irritating at the same time.
T.
p.s.
Lucky has a sale at the end of the year for 50% of a lot of jeans - you can get a pair for $50!

I LOOOOVVVEEEE Land's end modern fit straight leg jeans. I have had mine over a year and they still look like brand new. They are stretch but not so much that they don't hold their shape. You can even pick your length. They hit right below your belly button, no muffin top. don't stretch out to much, and are very comfortable. My only complaint is the color came off on my hands when they were new so washing them a few times helped. I wear these jeans constantly. I like you when I find jeans that fit but them in every shade, (my daughter makes fun of me) but when you find good jeans they are like gold. Also, old navy curvy works for me, buy I like my lands end best, and you can still be stylish. Good luck!!

I love Victoria's Secret jeans. I know some people who say they can't fit them, but they still seem to fit me after kids (although I'm back in maternity for now). If you go through their fits, they have one that has a lower front and a higher back and it is supposed to, as they say, prevent "panty peek." I find the hint of spandex keeps the fit nicely, the lower fronts keep my mommy belly from bulging too much, and the sales prices are pretty good. They have easy return policies if you don't like something, too. I can't wear anything with a higher waist because my size won't fit my hips and rear either.

Hi R., I had to smile at the term 'mom' jeans. Have you ever seen the show 'What not to wear'? It's on TLC. They always show women that wore mom jeans and how much better they look when they stop wearing them and wear a different syle. Anyway I too struggle with the muffin top. My solution to that is to just wear longer style shirts that are a bit 'flowy'. You can found them almost anywhere these days. I was a size 5 before my son. After him I was a 7. Now after turning 50 the body has shifted again and the bulk of my weight is in my tummy! I CANT STAND IT but have FINALLY excepted it and just hide it with different shirts; I no longer wear tighter t-shirts for example. I am very picky about my jeans, as most of us are, and some jeans I dont like just because of the color. I dont like thick heavy jeans for example. I like them to be soft. I am not a huge fan of spandex because they stretch too much. About 6 months ago after struggling with my too tight Gap jeans I gave it a bought a bigger pair but at their price I couldnt buy more. So I went on a quest and spent 2 exhausting days when my son was in school going everywhere and trying on everything. My favorites now are two brands from Macys and when they are on sale I get them for 19.99. Brands are American Rag or Grange. My faves are the Grange;the style is 'Selma Curvy low rise boot cut;. They are 82% cotton, 17% polyester, 1% spandex. They come in darker wash, lighter wash, and black. VGS brand from Pennys that someone else mentioned is also good. Hope that something one of us told you helps you in your search for the perfect jeans for you ;).

Have you tried a spandex tank tucked into the jeans? That kind of smoooooths things out.
Try Style & Co at Macy's and look for a mid rise waist.
