What Do I Do with Old Computers?

I have been cleaning out my office and we have some old computer stuff. I saw a show recently saying that some of these recycling places send them to China and the metals in them poison the children there. So, what do you do with old computers? Will the recycling center in Lee's Summit take them? I live near by but didn't know how to go about any of this. Do I have to wait until the city runs something? I remember the city ran something like that one day, but I always seem to find out about them just too late. So, the question is, what do I do with these so they don't end up hurting anyone or anything? Or is there some organization that can recycle this stuff into other computers? Things get outdated so quickly with technology, so I doubt it (these are very old). Any help is appreciated.

What can I do next?

list them on craigslist in the free section. Someone may be able to use them for parts.

You can recycle computers at the Surplus Exchange. With their program you won't have to worry about your computer going to the wrong place and poisoning children. Check out their website:

Be very careful with the hard drive. All your personal
information can be gleaned from it and used to steal
your identity. You need to make sure that whatever you end
up doing, you don't release your hard drive without cleaning
it first.

Good Afternoon B..

I have three ideas, hopefully they will help. One is to check on the Lee's Summit website periodically, http://www.lees-summit.mo.us. They notate whenever there are clean ups in Lee's Summit. Or you may check the school website for recycling; http://www.leesummit.k12.mo.us/.

My second idea is donating. If your computer works, even if it is slower than todays model, then donate it to someone or a group that could use it. Check around with Boys & Girls Clubs, Activity Centers, Thrift Shops, Group Homes, Retirement Communities and so forth.

Lastly, don't forget...Christmas is coming. A family or child would enjoy a computer for Christmas. Check with your church, neighbors, Social Services and so forth for needy families. Just don't forget to erase/remove/cleanup your hard drive of any private information. After you delete this information, empty your trashcan then do a scan disc and defrag to help it along the way.

Thank you for being a conscientious person on keeping our earth and children safe!

If it's a Mac, Apple has a recycling program. I'm not sure if it's only with the purchase of a new computer, though. Check their website.
