What Do I Do Now????!!!??? - Greenville,SC

This just happened and it's TERRIBLE. Please give me some ideas! I have been looking for a while for a more stable job than the one I have, which is very convenient for a far as schedule, closeness to my home and benefits but it's not stable (I get the contract renewed about every two months without having any security that it will be). Well, on Friday, last week, I had a job interview with a company that contacted me before for jobs that I refused because contract wise they were exactly as the one I already have, plus the job site is very far from where i live. The guy calls me and tell me that a new position has opened and it is a stable contract and they really want my skills and experience. So I go and tell them, look, if the contract is stable Iam interested but since you're far from where I live and I am a single mom with a child, I need to work 6hrs a day instead of 8, is it possible? He goes, well, you are the perfect person for this job, I don't care in how long you you do your job as slong as it gets done, so, YES, come here and work for us. Yesterday the HR director sends me an email asking me for all the documents they need to make my contract and to let them know when I can be available (asap was their request). So today I go to work and tell my boss and her boss that I am really considering this opportunity, it's a good one, but if they give me the same type of contract I'd rather stay where I am, or else I'll have to leave. My bosses really LIKE me and they were a little bit shocked BUT they told me they would talk to the President and the other firms to see what they could do. I even told them to hurry a bit to let me know if possible by tomorrow.
Well, you won't believe it but the other company just called me to let me know they changed their mind about opening this position and they don't need me anymore at least for now. OMG. i WAS FURIOUS!!!!
So what do I do now? Go to work tomorrow, be quiet and hope that they'll counterpropose and hire me with the contract I want and to let me know with the timing that I imposed (like, TOMORROW), or telling them I changed my mind and I'd rather stay with them (which makes it embarassing for me to explain why this happened all of a sudden), or just tell them that I asked this other company some more time to think...so at this my company will have more time to see what they can do??? But then what will I do if they say, sorry, go take the other job, we can't help you? HELP!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Dear Mamas, today i went back to work and I didn't have to mention anything about the other job offer that failed me...my company counterproposed and offered me the contract with ALL the requirements I asked for and showed me how they really respect me and want me on board..I AM SO VERY HAPPY and glad that from a bad thing came a PERFECT thing! Thank you all so much for your sympathy and advice.

Been there, done that! This same thing happened to me 5 yrs ago. I was working full-time and looking for part-time. Was offered a job doing the exact same thing the hours and days I wanted. I approached my boss, he said let me talk to the Pres. Next morning the other Co. calls me and says they have changed their job description to full-time.

SOOOOO I went into work that morning, let my boss know what happened BUT I also said to him that I was searching for a new job ONLY because I really needed a part-time schedule not anything against him or my current job. I voiced that I loved my job tremendously and only hoped this would not cause any waves, per se. Well he said he would still look into seeing if they could meet my needs and sure enough they did! They liked me so much that they didn’t want to lose me. I’ve always been 100% honest with my boss which is one of the reasons I’m so valued within the Company. That is why they did what they could to make me happy.

Good luck with however you decide to handle this!

I think I'd be honest about it. Go in and ask them to talk, but let them start the conversation. They may have an offer and they may not. If your boss doesn't come at you with what you need to hear be honest. Explain that the company looked at their requirement and they couldn't make it work, so you don't have a job to go to. However, you're still in need of the lesser hours, can they make it work? If they can, you'd be thrilled to stay. If they can't, tell them you're not quiting but you'll be continuing to look for work. If they're good people but can't make the new situation work, odds are they'll help you find something else. And they won't have grounds to fire you on if you're being truthful.

Ok, this may not be the ethical thing to do but my honest answer as far as what I would do in your position is this.

I would keep my mouth shut about the other company pulling their offer. Go to work tomorrow and see what your current employer offers you. My guess would be that even if they don't meet the other companies original offer they might offer you something just to keep you on. If they do, I would say I'll think about it and then at the appropriate time say I'm very happy here and appreciate your offer and I've decided to stay. If they offer you nothing you can always say thanks for trying and then in a few days simply tell your boss that after much consideration and speaking further with their HR it just wasn't going to work out so you'll be staying.

Good luck,
K.

First, I understand how you could be upset that the other company changed their mind at the last minute, but it's your own fault to be in this predicament. You told the other company that you would work for them, then you go and tell your current company that you will stay if they give you what you want. Maybe you should have gone to your company first and spoken to them about your options. Just a thought. As for what to do now, you should just be honest with them about your previous offer and let them know that you would like to stay on, but you do still need a more stable contract or you will have to keep looking.

I'd wait and see what your company says. If you don't hear anything, tell them that the other job is giving you a bit more time to consider because of the travel it would entail, that you're happy to stay where you are but would like to continue looking at what possibilities they might be able to offer - hours changes, benefits, whatever you're looking for in a new job.

What Ashley said. Don't be evasive, and don't be embarrassed to let them know why you were considering the other position. Honesty without drama is almost always the best policy, and you could end up in a better position. They like you.

Good luck!
