Question About Mirena IUD

I need some advice. I had a Mirena (IUD) put in last December. I had it in for 6 months and spotted everyday. Some days were worse that I had to use a tampon. After 6 months of this and cramping my OB/GYN told me it had to come out. I had it removed in June of this year and since then my periods have been normal. When I had placed, I just had a baby and I was breastfeeding. I never had a period when it was placed. I don't know if that is why I reacted the way I did with it. My body never got a chance to rest. Now that it has I am wondering if I will have the same problem again. I really liked how convient it was and I am really thinking about trying it again. Has anyone been thru this or read any information on how IUD's response in the body thru changes. Thanks for the help.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for all of your advice. Instead of having the Mirena put in I am going to have the Paraguard. Apparently that has no hormones in it and it is a lot safer. The doctor thinks that since it has no hormones in it I won't react like I did with the Mirena. We will see.

if you had a bad reaction to it the first time i wouldn't try it again. i had the same issues but only for a couple of months and it sounds like not as severe. (my placement was at the same time, 6 weeks after delivery, and i breastfed as well.) you should ask about the copper (non-hormonal) iud's friends i know that had many problems with mirena were fine with the copper.

Hi T. -

I delivered in Feb. and had the Mirena inserted in April. I breastfed until my son was almost 7 months old. My experience was similar to yours. I spotted for about 2 1/2 - 3 months on and off (some as heavy as my period before I got pregnant). I also cramped some. It was definitly noticeable, but not excruiating. However, I no longer spot, and my cramping is usually confined to one side (may not be Mirena related). I hope that helps. I am pleased with my experience so far. Good Luck!

Hi T.,
I'm a mom of a son thats 16 months. And every since I had conceived, I've been on the depo shot. It does me the same way. When I first got on it after my 6 weeks checkup, I think I may have stayed on about 3 to 4 months straight.(miserable!!!!)LOL And now I spot monthly and when it gets closer to get the shot again(every 3 months) it gets heavier. The OB-GYN and nurse say those are the symptoms of the birth controls, and they normally give you a symptom brochure about the effects of the body on that particular birth control. They all mostly make you gain weight and have irregular cycles. But if you were cramping hard and feeling bad, I suggest you not get it anymore. And I also heard it's not good to use tampons after having a baby and I don't know if that was affecting the IUD!!! Maybe? Try another method, maybe the depo shot. I noticed it doesn't make me cramp. The only thing is...I think it's making me gain weight and just the irregular cycles.

Not to scare anyone, (my Dr. said my case was rare) but I had a cooper IUD placed 6 weeks after the birth of my son around Dec. 2002. After about 14 months of pain, cramping, and excessive bleeding, my Dr. wanted to remove my IUD, (which was fine with me) when she tried to remove it, she couldn't, it was "lost"!!!! Some how the IUD had moved, & burrowed a hole into (and almost) all the way through my uterus. I was in surgery three days later. The Dr. tired a vaginal procedure, that didn't work, the Dr. then tried making an incision through my belly button and that didn't work so she ended up having to re-open my C-section inssision and go in that way to get the IUD out. I was in so much pain after surgery, hate to say it but I think it was worse than having my C-section. I had to take 4 weeks off work, couldn't pick up my son, it was pretty bad. - Not as bad as it could have been -
Personally I would never have one, and I'm not fond of them for anyone really. I know all forms of BC, have risks but if u can take the pill or even the Depo, maybe that would be a safer form of BC for u, and there is a new pill called Yaz, or (something)
I know my situation was rare, and everyone is not going to have the same outcome as me, but keep in mind my Dr. told me (after the removal) that I was very lucky because the IUD could have done much more damage than it did. (Like not being able to conceive again or having to have a hysterectomy!)
I hope that I haven't scared you or anyone that was not my intent, just to inform.
I wish u luck with your health and your family.

I had my Mirena IUD put in March of this year, so that was 9 months after giving birth. At first I had a few weeks of spotting, nothing that would have made me use a tampon, I just used pads. I do know that I was told I needed to have the IUD inserted while I was on my period. Maybe that decreased my complications with the IUD. I do sometimes get cramps, but I haven't had any spotting since August! :) So, if you wanted to wait the same amount of time, you'd get the IUD put in sometime in March 08.

I haven't used this, but a long time ago I used the depo-provera shot. After doing some research on that particular BC, and then other types, we have decided to stop using hormonal BC and IUDs because of the ways that we saw it to be preventing pregnancy. By thinning the lining of my uterus, it was basically making a hostile environment for a baby to survive in the case that I did conceive. (Which happens more than we realize) We aren't comfortable with the thought of flushing out a newly conceived child. So at the times when we have been concerned with child spacing, we have used a diaphragm and it was really great. Much more convenient than I expected. I just thought I would throw this info out there for you while you are looking into this.

Hello. Correct me if I am wrong, but did you say you had this placed while you were breastfeeding? As a WHCNP, breastfeeding women typically will have little to no cycle while actively breastfeeding. In addition I am very surprised your OBGYN inserted the IUD while you were breastfeeding. The hormone from the Mirena does pass thru with breastfeeding. All though small amount, it is not worth the risk or potential or unknown side effect for your infant. It is possible that you may have better results if you are not breastfeeding now. You may want to try the Implanon. It is a three year contraception and works really well. I have inserted quite a few and have had no complaints from my clients. In fact as a professional, I recommend the Implanon over the Mirena.

T.,
I have the mirena IUD. Just to clear this up in case people are unfamiliar with what it is, it is plastic and not a copper iud. I spotted for about 2 weeks when I got it put in (6 weeks after a c section). Then I spotted monthly for about 6 months, and I had no period for about 2 years. I haven't had any problems with mine. Every now and then I will have a small cycle or spot, but otherwise it's been fine with me. I don't know if it's me or the iud, but I sometimes tense up during intercourse with certain positions and it's a little uncomfortable, but other than that I've had no problems. I would say try it again and see how your body reacts to it. It may not be right for you. I used it because I cannot take pills (anything with estrogen), and the mirena has progesterone in it. Good luck!

I got one after healing from having my daughter. I have had it since August 2006. It has been wonderful. I still have slight cramping when it should be that time of the month, but i dont have periods anymore, and i dont spot. I did at first and I had slight cramping when my body was getting used to it, especially when I was breastfeeding. But now I have no problems at all. The only problem well, is that when my husband and I have sex, the plastic tubey string thing sticks him sometime. So it causes problems with that every once in a while. Other than that, nothing. Its great. Id say talk to your doctor about trying it again, now that your body is settled.

I have had the Mirena IUD for almost 5 years and LOVE IT!! The first 6 months were admittedly miserable for me....heavy (daily) bleeding and cramps, plus I was breastfeeding. However, I suspect (since I didnt document it anywhere) that about the time I stopped nursing, the bleeding stopped and life became sooo much easier and more pleasant! I have had only a few periods over the last 4 years and they were so light, I hesitate to call them periods at all. Having the Mirena has been awesome for me. I nearly forgot periods ever existed! :)

very bad idea unless your doctor insists, once you have a problem with this it will continue to get worse, not to mention it can go through the wall of uterus

Hello, I got mine about a year and a half ago. I love it! No hormones or chemicals and my insurance paid for most of it.I had spotting the first 8 weeks, it was nasty and I was getting frustrated. Then I took one week of regular birth control pills, as my doctor suggested, and it stopped! I have only had 4 periods since then. My friend got one a year ago, and had the same.. spotting, now- she hasn't had a period at ALL. I think she is one of 7% of people that it actually happens to. Hope this helps!
