Well Mirena Question

I looked at past posts about Mirena and didn't see anything about this.....towards the end of the 5 years, does Mirena start to "wear off"? Reason I ask is that mine is due out at the beginning of October and the last month or so, I've been spotting more frequently, getting PMS symptoms, etc. And my husband and I are curious if we should think about a back up form of birth control if the Mirena is indeed "wearing off". Did any of you experience this towards the end of your 5th year?

Thanks in advance everyone! Have a good day :-) !!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well looks like I am just going to need to make an appt. I think I might have a new one put in a little early just to be safe.

@ Mynewnickname - I am almost 37 so I guess perimenopause is possible. Heck, I'd be hopeful! LOL

I'm guessing the hormones are running out, and the hormones are what stop menstruation and PMS. (The hormones are not what prevents pregnancy ... I'm pretty sure.) The thing itself is still in there serving as an IUD, so you're probably fine. I have Mirena and the doc never mentioned that effectiveness would start to wear off. Couldn't hurt to call and ask your gyno though.

I'm at the end of my second Mirena and I have not spotted at all during my use. I would call your gyn and see what's up.

I don't have a Mirena, but I am pretty certain the hormones start running out after 5 years. Better to be safe than surprised.

Sorry, I'm not at the 5 year mark so I don't know. But I def think you should call your doctor.

I don't know how old you are, but is it possible that you are starting peri-menopause? This could cause the same symptoms.
