It's normal not to have periods with Mirena. I am having one put in after this pregnancy. Can't wait!
Hi ladies!! I stopped nursing almost 3 months ago and have yet to have my first period. Believe me, I don't miss it, but was wondering if this is normal?? I did have the Mirena IUD put in about 10 weeks after delivering. I know they're supposed to make your period very light, but non-existant seems odd to me. I have had minor cramping in the last few weeks but have yet to see any action. Is this normal???

I had the IUD for almost 5 year (went to the dr today it needs to come out July 09). I only breast feed for 3 weeks (due to a car accident). You might not get it back at all. When/if you do it can be so light that it may seem like a redish discharge. For years I had not even bought pads or tampax because it was so light and short it was a waste of time and money. I think I may have had a period for 1 day again so light I almost missed it. Keep a journal so you know it is really not regular.
Just to let you know of something I am going though (was told by my Dr today this is normal towards the end):
This just started happening this month (again I am almost at the expired time):
- headaches
- spotting (light but not in a cycle) a couple times a month/week
-hot flashes, sweating (this is not usual for me I DO NOT SWEAT)
-sensative
I have to say all in all it was a great thing to have.
Good luck to you hope this helps.

After one of my kids, I didn't start for months as well. The dcotor gave me some meds. I would ask your OB.
Actually it is very normal. I have had the Mirena in place for about 3 years now and my periods are practically non existent. I only have light spotting every few months. Enjoy the nice side effect.
Hi E.,
It would probable be best if you check with your doctor. He or she probably knows best. I was considering getting the Mirena and asked my doctor if there is any danger in not having a cycle and she said no.
Hope this helps,

With Mirena, it's normal to not have a period at all. It's wonderful. I love Mirena! I've had mine for nearly 5 years and I've had some spotting occassionally, but not monthly or anything. Usually when I'm under a lot of stress. But most of the time, no periods! Enjoy it!
Hi E.,
Everyone is different! I started back right away even while nursing and my cousin didn't have a period again until a while after nursing. If you get overly concerned, then call your doc and see what they think...but for now, I personally would just enjoy it ;o) There is no set rule...it will hopefully come when it is ready.
Are you very active at work? If your IUD is suppossed to keep it minor plus your very active, that could cause the no periods...just a thought.
Happy first b-day to your little boy!

I had a Mirena put in about 6 weeks after I delivered and periods got lighter and then stopped afer 3 - 4 months. I do still have symptoms, some cramping, fatigue and moodiness, but no bleeding and I haven't for probably almost a year now. My OB/GYN explained that the IUD thins out the lining of the uterus and keeps it that way so there isn't any need for your body to shed that every month, which is what causes the bleeding.
When I got the mirena in, they told me I could get no periods. But, you might want to check with your doc, especially if you're having any other symptoms. Certain problems (like thyroid problems) tend to come up after a baby is born. Otherwise, enjoy!

E.,
I am on my second IUD (had one, took it out to get pregnant, now on #2) and I can tell you that I have nothing that I would call a period. I just had my yearly checkup and when they ask the last period question, I never know the answer. I think IUDs are the best thing invented, especially now that they are a lot safer with fewer issues.
As far as the nursing thing, I quit nursing my twins at eight months and did not have a period until they were almost a year. And with my daughter now, I am still nursing, have the IUD, and get the occasional red-ish discharge. Enjoy the nearly period free life!!
E., i have had the mirena for one and a half years now. my period is anything but normal. i can have it every three months or i can have it twice a month. it may be light and somtimes its unbearable. the dr. says this is normal, and that only some women have fewer lighter periods. i wouldnt worry about it your body will sort it out.
I've had my mirena in since last October and am still nursing 1-2 x day. I get light one or two day spotting every now and then plus cramps and bad attitude! And that's it! It's awesome!
It's very possible that you won't get your period at all w/ Mirena. I rarely get it. When I do get it, it's literally 2 drops. I do get some period-like symptoms though. Breakouts, slight PMS, bloating, a little crampy in my lower back.
Its totally normal. Dont worry and enjoy it while it lasts!!
