Weaning! - Auburn,WA

I've been slowly weaning my daughter for the last 3-4 weeks as she is more interested in real foods. And lately I've been having mood swings and also watery vaginal discharge. I'm wondering if it is all a result of wacky hormones due to weaning. Anyone know anything or had any experience with this?

What can I do next?

K.,

First of all, if you are having vaginal discharge, call your obgyn.

Next, the emotional roller coaster can be helped without drugs!!! Go to www.stresscenter.com. This is a program that you do in your time and gives you the tools to help you through your mood swings and teaches you how to deal with things without the emotional pain. The program is called "Attacking Anxiety and Depression". I am currently going through this program now and it has helped me soooooooo much! I have always been an emotional wreck. My mood swings are legendary! Hiroshima had nothing on me.

During this program, I have learned two very important things: it's not my fault!!! And how not to take it out on those around me!!!

It is not your fault you have these mood swings. In the last year or so, your body has been invaded by a lodger who never paid rent, always ate the food out of your mouth, and then caused you a lot of pain when it was eviction day! LOL (I hope you got the humor in that!) You need time for your body to calm down and taking care of that baby has been first on your list since she was born. Now it's time for you to take care of you. Go to that web site. I know that they can help!!!

By the way, this program was co-created by a doctor and a woman who knows the highs and lows of life!

Good luck and God bless!

I am guessing it probably does have something to do with your hormones, but if you are too worried, you can always go see a doctor. When I weaned my son, my breasts poored milk and watery stuff out for like 2 weeks all night long and sometimes a bit during the day. I remember thinking it was really a strange feeling to be leaking that much when I wasn't engorged, but I knew my body was getting rid of the excess milk I had stored up. I went cold turkey with my son from nursing about 3 times during the day...sometimes 4 and 2 or 3 over night, to none at all (he was 17 months old and already drinking plenty of cow's milk). The body does strange things when you wean your baby, so just giving it some time may be all you need. If your discharge starts to smell funny, look milky, or if you start to itch or burn, go see a doctor...if not, probably just wait it out and wear a pantyliner for extra protection.

I would be concerned with the discharge and the only way to check on that is to check with the doctor about that.

The mood swings are probably hormones because you are going through physical changes, but have you shared any of these feelings with your doctor? Describe some of the things that you have put in this email. Hormones are so powerful for women that we don't realize what they do to us. You might also go to a naturopath and see if they can help you with more natural help, but the discharge is definitely a doctor's ballpark.
