New Mirena User Issues

I decided to get the Mirena last month for many reasons, one being that my sons is the result of my horrible memory when it comes to taking the pill. Well, I don't know what percentage of users has the IUD fall out, but mine did! I just got another inserted last week and it hasn't fallen out yet (we'll see when my period comes). But I have also been having other side effects that seem a little wierd. I'm having mood swings: is that normal with the horomones? Because I didn't on the pill. Yesterday I got severly nauseus and dizzy to the point I had to lay down and even that didn't help much, but it subsided after about 2 hours. And I'm also getting cramps and spotting every time my husband and I have sex. Can anyone else that has used it give my their input here? Many thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

First off, thank you everyone for your stories and guidance. My horomones seem to be leveling out and I haven't had any other pain or wierd side effects since I posted my question. I am still spotting with sex, but I'm also just spotting whenever. If I am following what some of you have gone through, hopefully the spotting will stop in a few weeks and will not continue in the future. If anything else comes up I will be going to the doctor immediately. I just wanted to give my body a chance to 'relax' for lack of a better word and it's always better to know someone else has had a similar experience (better on my nerves!). Thanks again!

You should call the doctor and discuss the side effects you are having. I just had mine removed after 5 years and I loved it! I stopped getting my period the month after I had it inserted, and experienced little to no side effects. I will tell you this......after having it for the 5 years and it being removed (didn't hurt a bit), my first few periods were HORRIBLE!!!!! I won't be too graphic, but I will say that I never went through so many tampons in my life! Thankfully things are back to somewhat normal. BTW, 2 friends did accidentally pull this IUD out with tampon use, so be careful!

I have had a friend who had one and found out it was put in wrong. Her's never fell out but she was sick all the time, blood pressure rose, she started having seizures, and pain every day especially with sex. She had them remove it and has been side effect free since.

good luck

D.,

I had the IUD after my son was born, but the hormones were not what I needed. I ended up having Depression and my anxiety only got worse. I had mode swings that were not normal and I could always feel the IUD. I had to have it removed and go back to the Depo Shot because I needed the hormones in Depo. With my daughter, I was on Depo right afterward and although I don't like shots, I like it best because I didn't get any weird side effects. If you're getting weird side effects, talk to your OB-GYN about it and if you think it needs to be removed, don't let your doc talk you into keeping it. You know what is best for your body and you know when something is wrong. Listen to your instincts. Some women can handle the IUD, others can't. Hope this helps and good luck.

Hi D.,
You definatly need to talk to you doctor. I had some problems with mirena myself. The first one went through my uterus, the doctor just checked and couldn't find it. So he put another one in me and week later I had horrible pains in my stomach. So I went to a doctor, he checked me again but couldn't find my second IUD. And I know that they didn't fall out!!! So I had an ex-ray and both of them went through my uterus!! So I was rushed to emergency surgery to get them out. I'm not trying to scare you, as long as you know that yours fell out. And if this one falls out you probably need to use something else. I use Depo shot and it works great for me.

Oh my goodness I have one too but I had never heard of them falling out, I was never even warned about it. I would definately talk to your doctor about your symptoms. I did have some of the moodiness (then again what mother doesnt) but the only other thing that I noticed were very light but drawn out periods. The nausea and dizziness though, that seems a little strange. If your doctor doesn't seem concerned then you may even want to get a second opinion. I tend to get a little over concerned about things like this though, so just make sure you feel comfortable with the choice of birth control you are using thats the most important thing. Good Luck!

I had concerns about the Mirena too. I have had mine in for two years because we were not ready to have a third child so soon. My boys are fifteen months apart and that is enough for me right now. Anyway--back to you. My first one came out too, only because I was on my period and the doctor said no problem. Well after doing the check I was supposed to do, I could feel the strings and went back to the doctor who accidently pull it out. So she out another one. I did have amood swings while my body was adjusting the hormones. As far as the dizziness, I can't say that happened, but if it continues--call the doctor and ask. For the last part about the spotting and cramping--it happened to me because my body was still adjusting. SOmetimes it is a small period and you may never get one for the month. It is all about how your body adjust. If you are still uncertain, Call the doctor and ask--they are there to answer any questions and you are not the first one to have this problem. It could be a number of things, but don't hestitate.

I had mine inserted in July and fortunately have not had any problems. I spot around that time of the month but not even a real period. I check once a month to make sure it's still in there & fortunately it is. I have mood swings anyway :) so I'm not sure if that's related to the Mirena or not. And I do have cramping around that time of the month, but not necessarily when my husband & I have sex. Now, sex actually does "hurt" more at times & my doctor said it could or could not be related to the IUD. I'm not sure. I'm sorry I can't be of more help. But if more people than not say they aren't having those same side effects, I'd definitely follow up with your Dr. I hope it all works out for you.

D.,
I can't remember if the Mirena is the 5 or 10 year IUD, but I have the 10 year IUD in. And I do know that if you are having any issues (no matter what), especially after already having one fall out, then you should call your OB-GYN. I have never had any of those issues myself, but anyones body can react differently to it. Good luck, and call your doctor. --L.

I have had my Mirena since April and havent had any weird side effects. When they inserted it I did feel a little weird but other than that no issues. I had my period for one month after and then havent gotten it since then. I have some spotting every once in a while but nothing that is a big deal.

Hey there! Well, just to let you know, my daughter was also the result of a failed pill; however, I have put my faith in them again because I like the fact that I take the pill every night and I know "it's working" to say the least. I don't like shots or IUD's because I don't like the fact of not knowing if it works or not. (I know it sounds weird but I just like the fact I KNOW I'm taking the pill.)
AS for all your side effects...my sister was put on NuvaRing and OH MY GOD!!! Her mood changed, she was tired and lazy all the time and I didn't like her when she was on it. I told her to go onto the NuvaRing's website and check out the side effects and sure enough...those were some of them. I told her to take it out (cause she was SO GRUMPY!) and as soon as she did, about a day later (not even that), she was back to normal with her regular energy level again. Her GYN now has put her on Yaz and she's so much better. I don't know why he put her on the ring anyways because she has no sex life. She said that he told her that the pill really isn't effective on anyone over 200 pounds but yet, it has been fine for me (I still trust it). I don't know, but there's my sister's story as well as mine and I hope this can make you feel a bit more sane knowing you aren't the only one. :-) Good Luck and Happy Holidays!

Good Morning,
In response to your request, I've had the Mirena since July of this year without any slipping. I did experience cramping and I spotted everyday for a month.By september the spotting became less routine, but I did experience increased mood lability ( mood swings). I have experienced light bleeding while having sex on a few occassions. Also, I exprienced increased vaginal discharge to where I had to wear a tampon, but this has seemed to decrease recently. I cannot recall feeling dizzy. However I am anemic and dizziness is normal for me. AS always, if your concerned call the doctor. Mine would tell me to wait for a few months and see how my body ajusts. Good Luck
