Hi,
My little guy just turned 1 this past May, and he no longer drinks formula--just whole milk. He has also transitioned to table foods, although he is not the best eater. He eats very few meats (only hot dogs) and not many veggies (he does eat avocado), although he loves any carbohydrate, fruits, cheese, and yogurt. At his 12 month wellness check-up, I had so many other questions, I totally forgot to ask if he should be receiving a daily multi-vitamin. Do you give your little ones a vitamin? And, if so, what kind is appropriate for a 1 year old?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for your advice. Although we do eat healthy and serve our little guy healthy foods, he doesn't always eat what we serve! So, I'm going to pick up some of the liquid vitamin that many of you suggested.

Hi
Yes I give my girls vitamins. I give them "might-a mins" from Market America. It is an "Isotonix" = a powder you mix with water and is absorbed 95-97% into the body. And they taste good and have phytonutrients.
You can get them at www.marketamerica.com/vanderson
Good Luck!

I've had pediatricians tell me my boys should be on vitamins, but my oldest (formula fed) never was, and my youngest (breast milk fed) would throw them up. I asked at my youngest son's 15-month appointment if he should be taking some kind of vitamin and the dr. was surprised. She asked if I thought he should and I told her I wasn't sure. She told me he is very healthy, has a healthy diet and appetite, and doesn't seem to have a need for anything extra, so why bother?

Hi A.,

My son has been getting a liquid vitamin since he was about 9 months. He loves it (which I think is goofy) so it's easy to give it to him. He eats meat, dairy and carbs great, but doesn't like vegi's so I think it's important to continue to give it to him.

It's a poly something... I buy them at Target.

My daughter started getting Flinstones Firsts when she was able to chew well, I believe around 1. Doc said it was fine and so we do it. Even when we offer a well balanced diet, it does not mean that our kids eat everything we offer, or in the amounts needed...so, I think vitamins are a good idea. :)

I did give my son a liquid vitiman, it was called Poly something? I just added it to his milk, he hated the taste of it straight. Now hes almost 2 and gets flinstones, some people say its not needed, but I always felt better giving him a little boost.

At that age we gave Poly-vi-sol, a liquid vitamin available in most drugstores. I know a lot of people say vitamins are a waste of money but my husband and I eat a very good balanced diet with lots of fruits and veggies (our son too), but fruits and veggies have been shown to be lower in vitamin levels than they used to be because of the mineral depleted soils they are grown in for mass production. We have both been athletes and are very in tune to when our bodies are lacking nutrients and find that vitamin supplements make a big difference in our health. My son now gets gummy vitamins for kids from Nutrition Now and takes flaxseed oil for an extra boost of Omega 3/6.

Most kids don't need vitamins at his age. Make sure he's not drinking more than 20oz of milk a day. It will not harm him to have a vitamin. If it makes you feel better, give him one. Stick with a liquid vitamin such as poly-vi-sol.

My 2 1/2 year old gets 2 Spider-man gummy vitamins and my 16 month old gets either 1 Spider-man gummy vitamin or a dropper full of Poly-vi-sol liquid vitamins.

You could also give your son Pediasure to get more nutrients. I used to do that for my 2 1/2 year old when he was younger because he's so small and such a picky eater.
