Vinyl Safety

I just bought some vinyl mattress covers and then was told that vinyl is not safe for small children (These covers would cover my two year olds bed and another twin bed for visiting cousins). I tried looking things up on the internet and could only find opinions; nothing absolute or researched. Has anyone heard likewise about vinyl? Is it really not safe? I want to be sure that I won't be slowly poisoning my son while he sleeps just for the sake of extending the life of a mattress. Thanks for any insight.

What can I do next?

Hi L.,

Unless you hear about a recall for a particular brand, or hear something on the news about it (I haven't heard anything, and I watch the news quite a bit). I once heard about some type of vinyl mattresses, the baby crib, toddler bed kind that might have been recalled a year or two ago, check with the place you bought it, or the brand/company itself. If this is not the case, I wouldn't worry about it. Just put a sheet over over the mattress cover, (I am assuming that is what you do).

I have a vinyl cover on my son's bed and it's been great for those occasional wet beds. I've never heard anything about them being unsafe. Just make sure they stay secure to the bed without coming untucked and since they are covered with a sheet, I can't see how anything like "fumes" or "smells" would be an issue.

I found this interesting: http://www.healthybuilding.net/pvc/SortingOutVinyls.html
Depends on the type of vinyl if it's considered "bad" or ok.

I've never heard anything like that! I have them on all my kids mattresses and my mom had them on our mattresses growing up. But, they do make a waterproof mattress pad. I have one on my oldest sons bed, not sure what it would hold if it got wet and would have to be washed each time. I don't think there's anything wrong with the vinyl ones, but that's my opinion. I have always been very healthy and so are my kids. Hope this help.
