UTI While on Antibiotics for Kidney/Urinary Reflux

My 9mo daughter was diagnosed with Urinary reflux (grade 3) when she was 6 weeks old. Since, she's been on antibiotics to fight the infections. Just this past week after several days of a very high fever we discovered she had a UTI, despite her daily antibiotic treatment. Her pedi put her on a higher dose of a different antibiotic for the next 10 days and then we have to retest her urine. The fact that she is having a UTI while on her antibiotics is very concerning...basically means her condition is not getting better as we had positively hoped it would. We have her regular 6 mo visit with her urologist in two weeks but I was hoping to hear from others that might have experience with this.
thanks in advance.

My daughter had the same thing at 6 months. I think you should get a second opinion. The second doctor told me there is no reason to put a child on all those antibiotics. I took her off because the damage he told me would do to her and I thougt it would do to her later on in her adult life. As she grew the problem disolved itself. What I did do is keep her away from any bubble baths, and kind of soap in that area and that seemed to keep her from getting any infections at all. Just warm water baths. Get a second opinion these days/////well worth it.

My child had an UTI also and the first antibiotic was not the right one for the type of bacteria, so we had to switch. Maybe it is the same thing...the antibiotic may not be effective for that particular bacteria.

We have had the same diagnosis, but found out prenatally - and were diagnosed at Stage 4. We have not had a breakthrough infection to date (he is 18 months). We had a VCUG at 12 months and he was downgraded to a Stage 2-3. We see Jack Ewalt and he is excellent. If you want a second opinion - I would recommend seeing him.

Try taking her to a chiropractor. She may need to have a hip alignment. My 1 yr old and 4 yr old and I all go to the chiro. about once every couple of months. I used to get a UTI everytime I drank a coke. I found out that my hip was out of alignment and it was pinching the nerve that controls my bladder and kidney function. Since I got adjusted I have not had a infection. My neice who is 4 also had the same problem. They tried her on every medication possible and she went to the chiro. and it fixed the problem. Make sure you find one that specializes in kids. Hope this works. I would try it before reaching for any more antibiotics.

I had this problem when I was a child. They did numerous tests and found that the ureters (tubes that carry urine out of the body) were not positioned correctly and were actually sending the urine back into my kidneys. I suffered for several years through painful infections, then had to have surgery to reconstruct my ureters. I was only 7 at the time of tests, so what I remember is vague, but I know they did numerous catheter-type tests to see inside my kidneys and ureters. After a successful surgery, I've been well, but one of my kidneys has calcified from the damage. I hope I've helped somewhat... is there a way to ask them to look at her ureters and make sure they're working correctly?

with that much anti-biotics, she really needs to be on a pro-biotics now to help rebuild. Go to Abundant Life Health food on 377 in Roanoke or any Vitamin Shoppe Store and ask for pro-biotics for infants. It will be something you sprinkle on food. You wll need to make this a daily part of her diet.Find a chiropractor for kids and get on the healthy nutrition route. Probiotics, enzymes and lots of fresh, veggies and fruit. No white sugar or white flour. no bubble baths.

I feel your pain :) My now six year old went through the same thing at 2 1/2. Grade three with antibiotics for almost a year and two or three break through infections. We finally had the surgery done. And in the past two years, she has only had one infection and is NOT on antibiotics everyday. It really improved her quality of life. It is a very fast prceedure, less than 30 minutes, they went in through the vagina so there was no scaring at all. We see Dr Saafield in Arlington and he is wonderful. He is a bit older, but is very gentle and caring and when we were tired of antibiotics, he wasted no time getting her in for the surgery. Best of luck in what you decide. I know how paintaking it is to see your little one hurting.
