Uh Oh, Bad Dye Job!

So about a month ago I dyed my hair to a medium brown color and I really loved it. Then the dye faded away (even though it was permanent) and was gone. I went back to the store and bought the same brand of hair dye, but a little bit darker brown, thinking that if it faded this time at least it would be the color I was shooting for. Welllll....this time there is no fading, and even though the box said brown, my hair turned out BLACK! I hate it. It's been a week and it has faded ever so slightly (either that or I'm just getting used to it) and I want to know if there is anything you all know of that can fix my hair. I would like to not put any more chemicals on it since I've put two boxes on in a months time, and I don't want to chance having that many chemicals. But in the mean time is there anything I can put that isn't too harsh that will lighten my hair or even take it back to normal? Thanks in advance!

I would like to recommend my hair stylist Conni Adams. She works in Dallas, but has a Ft. Worth cell no. ###-###-####. She is a color specialist and does a lot of color corrections. She used to teach hair color for Loreal. She knows color exceptionally well better than most. She could probably advise you on what to do. Also her rates are reasonable. Please tell her I referred you. T. O'Connor ###-###-####

I did the same thing a while ago and I read somewhere to use Pert (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=2008072907354...) and (http://www.ehow.com/how_###-###-####_remove-hair-dye.html) instead of my regular shampoo and then condition it with a good product. I was somewhat skeptical and didn't want to spend too much money messing it up some more, so I bought the travel sized container and saw some results. I used it every other day for two weeks and it worked to some degree. I waited about a month to give my hair a break and then had it professionally colored and highlighted.

Good luck.

I'm sorry this happened!! This is why We as hairstylist/colorist pay so much for our education...Please try going to a salon to get it fixed.. You can't see all the parts of you head,it can get blotchy..I think you would be much happier getting it done right.Just try to find someone in your price range. The thing is; it might cost a little more because of the time and the product that it needs to take to fix it..Good luck!!!

I think I have seen that you can use a mix of hydrogen peroxide and water, mist it daily and it will have the same effect as the sun slowly bleaching out the color a little at a time. I might try googling it to check what the mix of hydrogen peroxide to water is, I am sorry I don't know.

I have to first tell you I am a hair stylist, an with that they did tell us in hair school that purell or baby shampoo will strip out color(most of the time). I would not use hydrogen peroxide in fear of it turning orange. I understand that you just want to be happy with you hair color, and truthfully I would get to a professional for this situation. You will not get your hair back to the brown that you want with purell or baby shampoo, expecially with no fading which means your hair has soaked up all the color. Color is complicated and a quick overview if you keep putting perm. color from new growth to your ends each time, your ends will be so full of color they will no longer be able to hold color or moisture. If you need any more advice or help please let me know I will help you with whatever I can.

This is why its best to go to a professional. You should prob put a toner in to "tone" down the black. Or you'll just have to wait for it to fade. I would NOT put anything other than toner in your hair at this point. When you strip the color out, you are stripping out all the oils and you'll be left with straw hair that could take weeks to recover.
If you don't mind spending the money, you should go to a colorist who can fix your color the safest way possible.
I don't know what area you are in but I highly recommend Lexi at Studio 110 in uptown dallas or Nikki at Jose Eber in Plano. Good luck!!

baby shampoo is great for stripping hair color out. Wash your hair with it a couple times. Also Breck and Prell work well for stripping color as well. HTH

This happened to me once. I spent lots of money getting my hair done at a salon. I was going from dark brown to strawberry blonde. the girl that did my hair messed it up. I did not pay and never went back. I do however go to a different place for cuts, and highlights. Since my hair was Organge I went to Sallys and got a bottle to pull out my color. I cant remember the name but it comes in a silver bottle with pink top. If you go there and tell them what you need to do they will show you where it is. You can tell them it is in a silver bottle. Dosnt cost very much and it worked on my hair. It pull the color - most of it out. I waited about a week and them put color back in. Hope this helps. I color my own hair along with my daughters and you just have to be carful what color u use. Just ask someone at Sallys or you can go to like Fantasic Sams and ask them.

I know that hair is tricky and so you should consider a professional but I know it will cost an arm and a leg to fix a color mistake. Maybe you could try going to a beauty school that charges a little less and help a future stylist at the same time.

When I unintentionally turned my hair fireball red-orange, my colorist/stylist had me wash my hair with baking soda and Dawn. It stripped the color right back to where it was before I made this near-fatal error. I had to do some INTENSE conditioning afterwards, but there was no damage to my hair. Good luck!!!

By chance did you leave it on longer during the process? if you did the color could be darker, Before you colored your hair what color was it? Since it has been colored the effect will not be the same, if it originaly was lighter and you applied a dark color it became dark, then when you reapplied it was already dark slightly faded but still darker than original color, if you left it on the same amount of time it would turn out darker than before. To prevent this do not leave it on al long. To help it fade without chemicals, you have a couple of options, Shampoo several times with Baby Shampoo, Pert, Prell these shapoos are high in alkaline and will strip so but, not much color. You may have to use it several time. Good Luck!

A friend of my that went to beauty school told me to use baby shampoo to strip out color I didn't like out of my hair. It made the color fade faster for sure, but I had to do it several times.

Instead of using a color portectent shampoo, use a regular shampoo. You can rinse with a vinegar solution that doesn't harm your hair. When I dye my hair, shooting for a medium brown I use a light brown and then add a small amount of medium brown. This will keep it from turning black. My hair stylist was real good about giving me suggestions when mixing colors. Hope this helps.

The sun makes some dyes really fade fast, so you may of been out in the sun an extra lot. I would suggest just shampoo a little more often, and conditioner. I have brown hair and every time I tried a brown that I thought would be o.k. it turned almost black, there was just one kind that was more normal but I had to get it from a friend that was a beauty operator at the time. But another friend that is a beauty operator told me that unless I was gray not to get the permanent kind with peroxide , as it was much harsher on your hair and t he root grew out at the same rate anyway, to get the simi permanent, so the next time you color, you may want to try the simi permanent. And I just touch up the roots inbetween, as the other gets a build up, and can look darker than I want also.

I'm sorry to hear this....I would get to a professional.

It costs more to do your hair at a salon but you are experiencing the consequences now of saving those few dollars to DIY that might end up costing more $ as well as damage to you hair in the long run.

I recommend L'Image in Plano at Park/Preston area or Sean David at the Shops of Legacy.

Best wishes!!
