I know nothing but oh my goodness... I wish I had something beneficial to say but this is beyond me.
Keep us updated. :)
About two weeks ago I posted that my son, Nicky, had his 9 year well child check up...in that check up - his hearing was checked and he came back with a Tympanic Flatline...
I got him to the Otolaryngologist who re-did his hearing test...
While he still flat-lined...they found hearing loss as well in his right ear....so now the course of treatment - since he has a hole in his tympanic membrane is to do surgery...the surgery is scheduled for 18 November - I know it sounds like a long time off - however, after talking it over with the pediatrician as well as the ENT and the hubby - he will need about one week of recovery time (no running, jumping, etc.) so we scheduled for the week before Thanksgiving.
The surgery will require a skin graft off the back of his ear to replace the membrane in his ear...
So with this being said - has anyone else experienced this with their children?
What was the outcome - was the hearing restored? (they say it SHOULD improve)
Did the membrane "break" again...they said this can happen in about 5% of the cases...
Any more experience or information would be greatly appreciated!
THANK YOU!!

I haven't had this with my children (I'm 8 months pregnant with my first), but I did have this exact same surgery myself when I was 12. I'm now 35 and have excellent hearing and haven't had any other troubles with my ears since the surgery! Good luck and he will be fine! :) {{hugs}}
Wow...yeah, I don't know anything either, but I hope it goes well! It's amazing what medical science can do now, right?! I'm sure it will be fantastic though and I wish you all the best!
Hi Cheryl - I'm so sorry you are going through this with Nicky, it must be scary. I haven't experienced this with my daughter but have with my career. I work in clinical laboratory sales currently but for 19 years prior to that I called on research institutions. I had an amazing account in Los Angeles called the House Ear Institute, it is now called the House Research Institute and is affiliated with the House Clinic (named after Dr. House). The scientists I worked with did amazing research related to restoring hearing and like Tori said below, it has improved so much. I had some opportunities to be in the clinic portion and would hear about the successes with the patients, it was very impressive.
Best of luck with everything. I'm sure you have done your homework and are not going into this without preparation. November will come very quickly!
Just wanted to say I hope all goes well. It is so hard when your child needs surgery. Best of luck!
No info just smiles and hugs to you and the family! Stay strong......
Cheryl, I'm so sorry your son has to have surgery! I don't have any experience with this, but please let me know if you need anything during that week. I can bring you dinner even! Just let me know
I haven't been through this yet. but I do know a girl whos son has been through this. she was telling me about it cause of my sons ear problems. They did this exact same surgery on her son. it worked he had perfect hearing and had no more ear problems after that. This was done about 8 yrs ago on him. She told me not to be suprised if they did it to my son. She is preparing me incase he needs it. She said my sons symptoms are exactly like her sons who had this done. that is why I said I haven't had this done yet.
