New Tubes - Bleeding from Left Ear

My 10-month old daughter just had tubes put in her ears yesterday. Today, she has blood coming from her left ear. She also just vomited. The after-hours nurse says that this is normal - but it just doesn't seem right. Are there any nurses out there that can help put my mind at ease?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your comments. We went to the doctor this afternoon and were relieved to find out that there is no active bleeding in the ear. The drops help to liquify the clots caused by the incision, so what we thought was blood gushing out was actually a clot coming out.
Thanks again, everyone!

my son had tubes put into his ears at the age of 18 months and they just now fell out at the age of 5 3/4years old. he was sick after surgery but I don't recall bleeding but I did recall drainage. he has gone years with out infections which was great because we were not to the doctor every other week for his ears. trust me in the long run it is worth it. I have one child that has had 3 back to back ear infections but we have to wait until she has more before she can get tubes and the fluid just keeps building in her ears. she already has hearing loss due to this. I myself had 10 sets of tubes in my whole life as a child/adolescents and it kept me from getting ear infections as long as the tubes stayed in. well about 20 years ago it was a newer thing and they did not stay in long. so be happy and don't worry it is for the best and in the long run they will help out greatly. sometimes they do have to go on drops if tubes get blocked but that is only sometimes.

I have been through 3 tube surgeries with my boys. I do remember on the post-op sheet that went home with us it said they could have some bleeding..although my boys never did.
Both of my boys had troubles with vomiting after the surgery. Mostly that day. I think it all sounds very familiar to how my boys responded after the surgery. The vomiting is probably just a reaction to the anesthesia ect from the surgery. I would see how the ear does. If there is a lot of bleeding, I would call your dr back and let them know...or go ahead and call again and tell them you just want to be sure:)

well, they do cut the tympanic membrane to put them in and sometimes have to fish around a little, so a small amount of blood would be ok, i'd think, as lot as it isn't a large amount. vomiting is very common afer surgery of any type due to anesthesia. try gut rest for 2 hrs and then start on clears--pedialyte, jello, sprite until she doesn't seem nauseous anymore. good luck! and don't forget to give her pain meds with some kind of food to avoid nausea, as well.

hi! my son just got tubes last weekend! they toldme that a minimal amount of bleeding or discharge was normal but that if he was still bleeding after three days, to call in and they may want to see him again. It's been a week and we have had no problems! good luck!

Ok iam no nurse however both my kids have had numerous number of sets of tubes,

Yes the bleeding is normal however only if it is very minimal, if it is an excessive amount and it wont stop that is not, also if there is an odor with it, that is not as well. If you are worried about it call the doctor that did it and let him know.

L.-Her symptoms are normal. My son has also had tubes placed in his ears. In fact, it is not uncommon for them to bleed even months later if the tubes shift. His tubes were put in the day after Christmas 2007 and he has had blood drainage about 5 different times since then. I hope the tubes in your daughters ears are successful and cause her less ear pain and infection.
