It is a simple procedure that will help a lot. If you don't get them you are looking at years of hearing issues and speech therapy. Get the tubes!
Hi mamas! I took my 14 month old daughter to the doctor today because I believed she still wasn't over this last double ear infection that she had at the end of september. Turns out I was right.. and the icing on the cake today is her right ear drum has ruptured :( The nurse assured me it would heal in time on it's own but she also told me at her two week check (to make sure it is healing) they are probably going to talk to me about sending her to an ENT to talk tubes. (she's had 6 ear infections in a year) What has been your experiences with this? Has the tubes helped your children if they needed them? How long were they in the hospital, etc? Looking for any information I can get right now to help me be prepared for what sounds like a likely doctors visit. Thanks :)
Thanks mamas, definitely made my day better reading all your responses. I can't wait now to go back and talk to the dr's office and see where they refer us too. Im going to ask to at least go talk to an ENT because of all the problems she's had!
Heck with waiting for her two week check. I called today and got her an ENT appt scheduled. Unfortunately not until 10/25 because thats the first day they could get us in.. but better than waiting until her two week check *then* calling and having to wait another 3 weeks.. thanks for all the support ladies.. means a lot to me :)

Tubes are absolutely hands down the most fantastic invention on the face of the planet. My daughter had tubes at 1 year and it corrected ALL the babble delay that they thought was caused by her having so many ear infections and not being able to hear us. Within WEEKS she was babbling up a storm.
This was 10 years ago.... but it was pretty much outpatient, except at the hospital. We went early.... like 6am and they took her to pre-op (we were with her). The actual procedure (we couldn't be with her) took about 30 minutes and then she was in post-op for a couple hours (we were with her). She slept the rest of the day and was FINE the next day - you would have never even known she had surgery.
Good luck.
.
My oldest had tubes put in at 1.5 y/o. He had 14 ear infections in a year. My only regret was not doing it sooner.
It's a very simple procedure and definitely worth it!
ear tubes are a 15 minute procedure. the long part is the anesthsia and the "recovery" after, which is just them drinking something and keeping it down. the whole thing from the time you go in until you are out the door is maybe 2 hours max. and that is pushing it. the tubes do help with preventing ear infections. and they will help to prevent and ease hearing loss. I highly recommend the ENT. our oldest has a tube in his left ear and they are going to try to get one in his right ear this friday when they are taking out his tonsils.
Tubes can be incredibly helpful for kids who get ear infections. It's usually outpatient, the surgery itself takes very little time at all, but it takes several hours w/prep & postop. I've known so many kids that have had them. Some kids seem as though nothing happened, others are tired after, but I've only known of one that hurt. My baby was cranky for the day, but better the day after.
You have to be careful while the tubes are in, wearing earplugs while swimming. They eventually fall out, a couple years after, & some kids may need them put in again, because they help so much, others are fine. I don't know anyone that regretted it.
My son Nicky had tubes in his ears when he was 14 months old - it made the biggest difference in the world to him and us!! He was a TOTALLY different child - one that would sleep and not cry. YAY!!!
He is dealing with a different ear problem now - he has a hole in his tympanic membrane that will require surgery in November. They will skin graft from the back of his ear and sew it over his existing tympanic membrane and heal there.
he has also suffered hearing loss because of this as well.
Nicky was in the hospital for 2 hours. 15 minutes for the surgery and 1.45 for observation after the surgery.
He has only had one ear infection since the tubes were put in.
They fell about about 9 months after they were put in and it was determined that a 2nd set was not needed.
I would go for it!!
hey been through tubes 3 times. all different reactions though. 1st he was in the doctors office about 30 minutes acted drunk for about 3 hrs. His speech went up about 250 words in a week. 2nd time different kid. he was in the hospital outpatient for about 15 minutes. He woke up very combative I don't think they gave him enough anestisia sp? they didn't help. 3rd time same one as second time in the hopsital outpatient for about 25 minutes they had to check his ear drums remove wax and do tubes and check his ears while he couldn't fight them. He slept for 2 days. all day long. He was found to have retracted ear drums while the tubes were put in. 3 days later he seems to be hearing better. his speech has gone up only about 50 words. he is now finally at 3 1/2 doing 2 word sentences on a regular basis and talking without being prompted. so no 2 surgeries are going to be the sme and the results will be different. varies by kid.
My daughter got them just after 2.5. They were awesome. We quit having to go to the doctor all the time. In fact, we never went except for well visits pretty much until she was around 5. When she started public school, she started getting strep. Tubes were wonderful for us. It was a quick outpatient procedure at the hospital. Would do it again in a heartbeat. I hated seeing my baby hurting with her ears. So painful.
Good Luck!
My daughter is 4 1/2, and she finally got tubes in July. She has had over 40 ear infections in her short little life. But her pediatrician would not even discuss tubes, so we got a second opinion, and I am sure glad we did. My husband was very apprehensive about her getting tubes in her ears, we thought with everything else she goes through, should we really expose her to "optional" surgery, but in the end we went for it, and she is talking so much better, before, you had to ask her twenty times to repeat herself before you could finally understand what she was saying, now it is maybe two or three times if any. Her ENT said she has had fluid behind her eardrums since she was born, and because of that, she wasn't hearing what we were saying properly, it was like us putting our head underwater, and trying to understand what someone is saying. So far, she has not had a single ear infection since the tubes, and I know it has only been three months, but when you are used to your child having a new ear infection every month, that is a long time for her. LOL. We had our daughters done at Children's in St. Louis because they didn't want to do it down here with her having a seizure disorder. We went in at 9 AM, and by 10 AM, we were headed home. We went into the room, and got her gown on, and they asked us all the pre-op questions, then they took her to the OR, and we stayed in the room they took her from, I am not joking, about five minutes later the phone in the room rang, and my heart sunk because I thought they had run into a problem with something. But, it was the doctor saying he was done!!! I could not believe it was so fast. Then they brought her back in, she was awake, and she drank a whole 8 oz. apple juice, then she ate a bag of animal crackers, she kept them down, so they sent her home. We stopped on the way home and ate at McD's, and she ate some bread, she was great, and by the time we got home you would have never known she had surgery. I will say though, for the first couple of weeks, we had to watch any loud noises, because she wasn't used to stuff being so loud. lol
Hi J., my oldest son had to have tubes put in his ears a llittle after he turned one because he had already had 10 ear infections by then. It's an outpaient procedure and the procedure only takes about 10 to 15 minutes! It is so fast! I couldn't believe how fast it was and they don''t knock them out for it. They just give them laughing gas and they are tired for about 2 hours after and then they are back to their normal self. This surgery is so worth it! After my son had it done he never had another ear infection and u can tell he felt much better! When your child's body no longer needs the tubes his or her body will let then go. One of my son's
tubes came out after he was two and the other one came out like a year
later. Good luck! I hope u do it cause your daughter is going to feel so
much better! God bless u and your family!
