Too Many Bananas!

Help! I've got to do something with about half a dozen bananas before they go bad! Family won't eat them if they have brown spots on the skin (horrors!), and they are tired of banana bread and muffins already. Does anyone have an easy recipe that will use a whole bunch? Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thanks a "bunch" for all of the great banana ideas! I wasn't sure about the freezing thing, but now I know what to do. I will also try the popsicle and oatmeal ideas. I appreciate everyone taking the time to respond!

Why not freeze them - just stick them in the freezer as is and take them out in a few months and use them. I do it all the time. Just put them in the freezer with the skin on - you don't even need to put them in a ziploc bag. Come September, you'll be ready for some banana bread again, and take them out - or next month, take them out and make banana smoothies on a hot August day - throw in a scoop of ice cream and some chocolate syrup - delicious.

Make smoothies!!! (yum)

I usually make it by using about 4-5 very ripe bananas, add milk, orange juice and any type of frozen berries (I love the mixed berries from Jewel which have strawberries, raspberries & blueberries).

You can freeze the bananas once they get too brown. Just toss them in the freezer peel and all. I do it all the time. I've kept mine in the freezer for a long time until I decide to make another loaf of banana bread. When you thaw them for the recipe, they will be abit watery and have a slimy texture but this is perfect for banana bread. Another option would be to make smoothies. Some Dannon vanilla yogurt, bananas, strawberries and/or blueberries, couple of ice cubes, and a liquid (canned nectar, milk, OJ etc) and you are set!!

I just got rid of my bananas and strawberries by throwing them in the blender with a bit of yogurt and some milk and then putting them in popsicle freezer things with the stick! It was a great way to cool down and even better way to get her to eat her fruits! (next time I will probably add a little splenda or juice to it also since I like them a little sweeter)

Cant wait to read all the replies you will get on this one since we always have left over fruits! I am gonna try the banana bread next time I think though- great idea!

Blessings to you and yours!

Peel and freeze those bananas. Use them in smoothies. Here's the recipe: 1 or 2 frozen bananas, 1 cup orange juice, 1 cup yogurt, any flavor, few handsful of frozen berries. Whir in the blender, then add a few dollops of Cool Whip. The Cool Whip keeps the smoothie fluffy and then it won't go flat. I've even frozen leftover smoothies to make yogurt popsicles. Very thrifty compared to store-bought.

In addition to the fabulous smoothie recipes & popsickles plus freezing (works great for smoothies, though I've been told you peel 'em & put them in double baggies then they're great for smoothies, ready to go), I was thining of banana milk. When I was a kid I loved bananas sliced in milk, it was something my grandma gave me. I had a coworker whose son totally got a thrill from her tossing a banana & milk in the blender. I tried it and instantly remembered being a little girl eating the banana slices at my granma's. My daughter isn't thrilled by it, my son loves it. It's worth a try.

The other day I had some yogurt ready to sour & tossed it in the blender with milk, frozen berries & banana. It was really great & adds more antioxidants into your meal

Normally I do my smoothies with orange or pineapple juice, frozen strawberries or cherries and a banana or two to sweeten it all up. Smoothies are great with spicy food, especially tacos, as it puts out the fire. Serve them in wine glasses and your kids will think it's the best treat in the world, despite it being healthy! Also if you're a sneaky one, you can add a little sweet potato or carrot puree into these things without them catching on that they're eating *gasp* vegetables! lol.

Have fun!

You can freeze bananas! Put them on wax paper and wrap each banana whole the put them in the freezer or cut before you put them in freezer. Once frozen, take out your butcher knife cut then put in blender with Dole Pineaple Jiuce (not concentrate) Strawberrys (fresh or frozen) (optional Ice Cream or Yogurt) blend! I know you said that your family is tired of banana bread and muffins but what you can do is maybe add some chocolate chips (making it more like a dessert) and then after you make them, stick them in the freezer. It's great because when you suddenly have people coming over and you don't have time to bake, you can just grab one and serve (obviously after defrosting!!) :) You can also use smashed bananas in place of vegetable oil in baking, though I'm not sure of the ratio. And one other thing I do is smash up a banana and add it to oatmeal to sweeten it up. Hope this helps!

Make bannana ice cream. It's great! Just cut up the bannanas and freeze them (I put wax paper on a cookie sheet and then place the bananna slices on it - then once they are frozen, I put them in a ziplock baggie. This keeps them from freezing together in one big lump.) Then whenever you want bannana ice cream, put some frozen cunks of bannana in the food processor with some water. Once it's an ice cream texture you are set. (You can add peanut butter, or chocolate.. but it is plenty good straight!)

You can make fruit smoothies or cut up the bananas and freeze them for future use in ice cream, shakes, smoothies or various recipes. There are some days that are super busy for our family (like everyone these days) were I can't cook a balanced meal so we get something on the go. So at night I will make my kids a protein shake that is loaded with vitiams. Normally protein shakes don't taste the best however they do have chocalate flavored which I add the bananas to with some ice and the kids think they are getting an ice cream shake. Good Luck!

I noticed that you have many great ideas for smoothies and freezer things. I also did the freezer banana pops as a "project" w/ the four kids I nannied for. We froze them on popsicle sticks and then spread peanut butter on them and they wanted to put fruit loops on top and I bet a little melted chocolate would be yummy too. (Not sure if your kids would be wanting to do that considering they are older) Another idea would be banana cream pie-not too sure how to make it but I know it would be really good with the ripe bananas sliced on top of it! Good Luck!

I've got a tip for you. . . cut the bananas into chunks and dip in chocolate then freeze. It's best if you freeze them on a cookie sheet then pop into a ziploc bag in the freezer. I served these on a fruit tray at a bridal shower and some people didn't realize they were eating bananas! Try it out!

My 2 yr old LOVES smoothies. Make a few batches & you can make smoothie popsicles. You can get popsicle molds at Walmart or Target. I take 1-2 bananas, yogurt, frozen fruit, some all bran or plain oatmeal (to give it some fiber), you can add some peanut butter for extra protein (careful, a little goes a long way - 1 Tablespoon per Blender batch)& I add some ice to make it a thicker consistency. Or make your own mix & experiment. What about chocolate covered frozen bananas? I bet the chocolate sauce that hardens would work? You can always make banana bread/muffins & freeze it for another time too. Good luck!

I don't know what others have said, but you can always peel them, wrap them in plastic wrap, and freeze them. Frozen bananas make wonderful all-natural "popsicles." You can add them to smoothies, or bake with them as needed (defrost first).

Hi M.!

My name is VeRita. Does your family like smoothies? I use bananas with yogurt, crushed iced and different juices and make smoothies. My grandchildren love them, and even once in awhile my husband. I started doing that several years ago, to keep my bananas from going bad. You can also slice them up, freeze them and use them in place of the crused ice if you want. I hope this helps in some small way. Have a blessed day.
