Hi mamas, I was wondering if you have any tried and true smoothie recipes, preferably WITH veggies. Also, no ice cream. I'd like to use yogurt (or ice, almond milk, whatever), and if I can hide some veggies in with the fruit I thought it would be a great after school snack for my kiddos. TIA!

I usually do a mix of any frozen fruit (we like pineapple, mango, strawberry, or banana, but anything will do), milk and orange juice. I find that the juice and pineapple are enough to really sweeten the smoothie. I've never put veggies in there...I should try that.

Our fav is the following:

Handful or two of organic baby spinach
Handful or a little less of frozen strawberries (sliced are easier to blend)
Half of a sliced banana
A spoonful or two of avocado
Spoonful of milled flax seed (in bakers aisle near flour)
Cup or cup and half of OJ, or add enough to make a smooth consistency

My kids gulp this up and you cannot even tell there is "healthy" stuff in there! Tastes just like a fruit smoothie.

The spinach can be replaced with kale or other greens as you see fit.

Google "green smoothies" on the internet. You will find tons of recipes.

We use a cup of frozen fruit (usually a mix) and a cup of apple juice (although I've been sneaking part water instead of juice. So far it has gone unnoticed and it's saving calories.)

Monster Shake:

One banana
One handful baby spinach
Milk (enough for a couple generous glasses)
Honey (optional)
Lecithin (optional)

So, tasty. No joke.

1 banana
1/4 apple or 1/2 apple, up to you
Milk or as you prefer, almond milk (adding it in depending on the thickness of the smoothie, you want)
Peanut butter 1/4 cup
2 Tablespoons Ovaltine

Blend all together in blender.

It has protein and bananas/apples for good energy

My kids and their friends love this.

For a veggie smoothie:
Carrot Juice
Orange juice
And/or apples cut up, or apple juice
can add a tad of crushed ice
Blend together
My daughter loves this

or just Google Search "Jamba Juice Smoothie Recipes."

Spinach and Blueberry are a great combination and you can't even taste the bluberry! Also try radish greens (don't use a whole lot). Put about half a cup of frozen bluberries with about a cup of fresh spinach, a cup of milk, and a handful of ice cubes. Add half a banana if needed.

I use plain yogurt, a splash of milk, a large handful of baby spinach and a banana as the base. It is thick and smooth and you can't taste the spinach.
Then I either add frozen berries or peanut butter- whatever I am in the mood for. As a dessert smoothie I will do the peanut butter banana one and add a squirt of chocolate syrup or cocoa powder.

Yogurt (whatever flavor you prefer), fresh fruit (any kind, I usually use berries - strawberries, blueberries, rasberries, blackberries), tofu (you can't taste it and it adds tons of protein and nutrients!), and some fruit juice to thin it out a bit. Voila!

there are some good overall tips on doing this on this site but really if you use frozen fruits, greek yogurt and add to taste the spinach you can play with it and find what you like.

When I was pregnant, I had one nearly every morning! I used frozen fruit, skim milk (but almond milk would be good too), flax seed, wheat germ, and honey or agave nectar. You could use yogurt (I am sure I did that too) that compliments the flavors (like strawberry yogurt with a raspberry banana smoothie), or just use plain or vanilla.

Here are some combinations that I like:
Strawberry & Banana
Raspberry & Banana
Blueberry & Banana
Peanut Butter & Banana (sometimes I added chocolate chips...yum!)
Strawberry & Blueberry
Pineapple & Peach
Peach & Mango
Peach, Mango, & Banana
Strawberry, Blueberry & Banana
Raspberry & Blueberry
Orange & Banana
Orange, Pineapple & Banana
Orange, Peach & Mango
Orange, Peach, Mango, & Pineapple

Try any combo you can think of that sounds good to you! To freeze a banana, peel them RIPE (sweeter that way) and freeze in a baggie. You can freeze whole, in half, or slice them. If you have freezer room, slice and put on wax paper on a cookie sheet and freeze, then put the pieces in a baggie. I used fresh oranges (or clementines), not frozen. When I did this, I would need less milk. (If using oranges, put them on bottom.) The frozen fruit takes place of any ice needed to make it cold or thick. Put however much fruit you need for the number of servings desired, then top with some milk. Add the honey once everything is emulsified and the blender is running so it doesn't stick to the blades. You can also add protein powder if you want.

I love avacado smoothies. One avacado, two tbsps honey, 1 cup of vanilla almond milk and some ice. It's a pretty, green color. I often time times use an avacado along witha banana and an orange or apple.
I use raw spinach in a lot of my fruit smoothies, it grinds up nicely and you cant taste it. I generally add pulverized flax seed to mine and a little bottle of probiotic.

a small amount of FRESH orange juice
banana, blueberries, raspberries and fresh spinach.. << the other fruits conceal the green taste of the spinach (depending how much you use) I actually don't mind the green taste.. but others may not..

additionally, a frozen banana and almond milk, raw cacao powder make for a healthy milk-shake smoothie..

Also, fresh carrot and green apple and fresh kale... again, how much is up to you...

For summer months.. fresh watermelon juiced is great. albeit, it's not a smoothie.. but is very hydrating and packed full of minerals...

I've never tried it with veggies but, I have used tofu for protein. Yes, it sounds gross but, you can't even taste it. I used 1/4-1/3 of the container (it came in a square container in the veggie isle, about 6oz) and mixed with fruit, ice, crystal light, yogurt. It didn't freeze well so, drink all of it when you make it.
