I have a 3 1/2 yr old son who is not doing well at toilet training. I was hoping someone would be able to give me an idea if there is any that i havent done on how to get him to go on the potty. I have tried stickers, prizes, nothing seems to work with him. He is content to sit in wet pants. If any one has any ideas please help.

What can I do next?

I don't have a boy so this may be different.. I brought books in the bathroom with me and had her sit on the toliet and I read her a book so she could sit there for a while. Don't get frustrated though because Children can sense that!

GOOD LUCK!!

Hi J.,

While alot of people have given you some great ideas the ones that worked best for me when potty training the children I work with is what I like to call "Potty Party". I have sat in a bathroom for two days straight with the children I have potty trained. The children pretty much stay with out any pants on in the bathroom. I filled the tub with a few toys and gave the child alot of fluids. With a timer I set it for five mins and each time it goes off the child would sit on the potty for five mins or if they go before that I would let them off. If the go I potty there would than be a huge party in the bathroom for the next five mins they have till they sit on the potty agian. we sing the (child's name) went pee pee on the potty (repeat 3xs) whoo woooh. than the child would get a small amout of his/her favorite treat. I never pushed the night potty training I always recommend to the parent to just put a pull up on them at night and don't give them fluids hour before bed usually by the 4th week they end up night time potty trained. Another thing I have seen done when all eles fails is keeping the child off rug and floors that pee would puddle on and having the child wipe the pee up after he/she had an accident. some are for that idea others find it a bit cruel. Well I wish you the best of luck with your potty training experience. Keep us up dated.
Take Care,
S.

well i have heard several differnt tactics. My son potty trained easily with m&ms but I know it isnt easy for everyone. I have heard the guilt works- that they dont make diapers for 3 yer olds and you will have to lear nto go n thepotty or let him pick out new underwear(maybe like dads) and make a huge deal about not letting them get wet. alos heard about floating cherios or fruit loops in the toilet to see if he can hiut them when he pees like abulls eye- sometimes the game is fun- the other tactic is to let them be naked while you are at home - less laundary and it is easier for them to run and pee. watch the liquid intace and remind him 20-30 min later and stay on hi muntil he gets the sensation of needing to go- that is the biggest thing- good
luck

I feel your pain,, my 3 1/2 won't do it either.. once school is out, I'm planning on letting him wear regular cotton undies and let him pee on himself.. it's good to do that outside though, so they won't sit on furniture! good luck..

Hi J., my son potty trained over the summer....what made it easier was being outside and less clothing on him. I am training my daughter now and she was stubborn at first but once she sat on the potty and realized that it wasn't scary...it made it easier. I gave her lots of water and spent the day in and out of the bathroom. Good luck.

Hi J..

What really worked for my son was the motiviation to go to school. He REALLY wanted to go to school and that forced him to be trained because "big boys" wear underwear and go to school. We also got the Elmo Potty DVD which is really cute, and helps explain using the potty on a level they can relate to. Good Luck!

it is the perfect time of yr to have him run around in just underwear. that way when he wets it will run down his legs and be uncomfortable. so when he has to go you can have him just run to the potty, or if you are outside, have him use the nearest tree. pretty soon, he will not want pullups on bacause of the novelty of peeing outside, and it makes it easier for him to be able to use the potty/toilet.

Ah yes, seems like we are in the same boat. My son is also 3 and 1/2 years old, and it has been about a two month process for me to have him even sit on the potty. In those two months he has gone probably four times on the potty..The rest of the time he goes in his pants...He has no problem sitting in wet pants for as long as he can...I have started giving treats like a spoon of ice cream if he sits on the potty, and tells him he can have more if he goes potty...that seems to work a little better than cookies. Iam also going to try to put some type of cereal or something in the potty to see if he would pee on that., use it as a game or something..I am desperate my self. So , good luck.,My goal is to have him potty trained in time for our trip to TN in August. So we shall see...
