My daughter had this problem last year. I called our regular pediatrician and they had her come in the same day. The pediatrician took care of it and had us come back a few days later for a check up, then taught us some basics for avoiding this in the future.
If it's infected, you may want to have it checked out. I keep forgetting how much to leave at the edge of the nail and the correct way to cut it as we don't have that issue... I know that it's been brought up previously tho. In the meantime, use some neosporin if he has any pain.
Just take him to his pediatrician. He'll take care of it, and he'll tell you what to do if your son has a tendency toward ingrown toenails. I've been happy with the Center for Pediatric and Adolscent Medicine on Big Beaver in Troy. My kids are teenagers now.
