Toddler Only Wants to Eat Baby Food

I have a 14 month old that only wants to eat baby food. I try something different all the time. Mashed banana, mashed potatoes, small pieces of chicken, etc. If it has a texture he acts like he is going to throw up or he digs it out of his mouth with his fingers. I bought a cookbook to try some different things and that didn't work either. I feel as if he isn't getting enough to eat. He has baby oatmeal for breakfast with baby food fruit. Size 2 veg. and fruit for lunch and a veg. and fruit for dinner. He will eat puffs and crackers but only a couple of bites and then he doesn't want anymore. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

Try mixing it up!!!
If you are feeding him green beans...lightly mash a couple of whole green beans and add them to his baby food. Do this a couple of meals them slowly add more of the more textured and less of the baby food until he is eating just the more textured stuff...then you can mash the textured stuff less and less until he is eating normally. Hope it works for you.

I had a child like your son. She liked me feeding her, so eventually and after some advice from an 80 year old mother of 8 I tried the surprise vegetables on her tray and she began to pick the ones she liked and ate very well after about three days of the veggie tray experiment. Here's how I started and although she seemed to prefer vegetables she grew and is now in her 30's. You will have a lot of waste at first but it works really well. I used frozen vegetables as they were easy to keep frozen. I put 2 of every vegetable listed on her tray and let her handle taste and explore. I did not supplement her with the baby food either and when she got hungry enough (by dinner on the first day she picked her food and ate) First tray should include
1. 2 grean beens (My daughters favorite)
2. 2 peas
3. 2 lima beans
4. 2 carrots (the disk cut)
5. 2 slices of banana
6. 2 canned cherries
7. 2 small cubes of white or sweet potato
8. 1 quarter of a slice of bread with butter

For over a month this was her lunch, dinner, and snack tray. I separated the food and put them into small containers and refigerated the whole days food so that all I had to do was warm the veggies and left the fruits cold for her. within a week she was eating all of her veggies except the lima beans and all her fruits I gradually added all veggies and fruits to include her favorite (small slices of apples with peanut butter). Withing 2 months she had tried meats but truly preferred vegetables until she discovered hot dogs at 2. Good luck and be patient he will follow soon. I also made myself a plate like hers and sat with her at the table and we ate together.

What does your pediatrician say?? I have a friend with 2 little ones who wouldn't eat table food, gagged and threw up. At 15 months, they were both diagnosed with severe reflux and put on meds. Within 3 weeks, they started eating everything in sight. You also might check with a Pediatric nutritionalist.

I also had this problem with my son (now 16 months). I also tried EVERYTHING, so as a last resort I went to our doctor to ask his advice. He said "This is going to sound bad, but don't give him anymore baby food, a child will not starve themselves, he will eventually learn to eat what is in front of him." I was so not wanting to do that, but decided that might be the only way. Granted he is normal and healthy with no reflux, or teeth problems as was suggested in previous responses. And it worked. He ate NOTHING the first day. Talk about freaking me out!!! But the second day he ate a few crackers, and little more the next, and so on. He is still extremely picky, but every day is a little better. I know that if I keep putting the stuff on his plate that he does not like, he will eventually try it and hopefully like it!!! Hope this helps!!!

Does your little one have issues with textures? My son didn't like certain textures when he was a baby and would gag and throw up. Now I have a grandson who's somewhat the same way. No problems with teeth or reflux, just has texture issues. In that case, small amounts are the best way to introduce new foods with textures he might not like at first. Hang in there, it gets better!

How do his teeth look? My nephew would only eat soft foods for years, because his teeth hurt. His front four teeth were so bad they had to be capped by the time he was 3. He still prefers softer foods. He also tends to prefer white or yellow colored foods for some reason.

Maybe try organic foods, yes its a little more pricey but sometimes the chemicals in foods make them taste different.
Some babies develop differently its ok.
