We've been living in Flower Mound for 2 years (Dallas/Fort Worth area) but I have to say I don't like living here. It's NOT the people who are all nice & we have some fun friends but it's that I find there's nothing to do with kids. We swim at the pool & can shop at all the typical big box stores & all the same chain restaurants but there's no great parks or hiking trails. We try to go for a Sunday drive somewhere but there's no scenic drives or destination that makes for a good nice drive. Is there any character to this huge city? Any natural beauty areas we have missed? We have looked for parks to picnic by lakes but bleh! Went to the Fort Worth Zoo but find the 6 Flags was pretty skuzzy. Don't want to insult anyone's home town but what is there to do in the Dallas area ? Am I missing something? Is there somewhere to go on a Sunday that is a reasonable drive (1hr) that kids would enjoy. Thanks for any suggestions.

Dallas Zoo is more kid friendly
Museum of Nature and Science is wonderful for kids
Check for your local splash parks and stuff
Just north in Davis, OK (off of 35) there is a drive thru animal park that is a lot of fun as well as a great camp ground with wonderful hiking and swimming areas.

Little more than an hour out but if you are wanting something a little different and out of the city head out to Granbury. There are a lot of antique stores an ice cream shop an old soda fountain, etc.

Check out www.familyeguide.com for more stuff in your area on a weekly basis

Take the kids to Glen Rose to the drive-thru animal preserve one weekend. Takes a few hours to go through, and you can, stop midway at the rec center. Fossil Rim is on the way, but I wasn't overly impressed with that> You might enjoy it though. Go up to Lake Texoma for the day.. Natural beauty at this time of year is a bit challenging but can be done. Go over to Allen to Celebration Park (also has a Splashground there) and picnic there (look on-line for info on it). Go to the Splashground at Village of Fairview (75 and Stacy) and pack a picnic. They have beach volleyball and play area there too.
You can go to Gadzooks by Vista Ridge. There's also Jump Town and Cosmic Jump. If you head South for a daytrip, you can go to Hill Country or Austin. Sign up for Groupon, as it can give some good ideas/sugestions. I've heard that Sandy Lake Park is fun for young kids, a,d you can picnic there. Go to White Rock park for walkimg, hiking, biking, or roller blades. There's also the Chilsom Trail in Plano. Check the park district...City of Plano Parks have a lot of activities and day trips you can do even not living in Plano. Oh, there's a steam train in Grapevine that you can take to Fort Worth.. In Plano, there's a homestead farm. I also have heard the aquarium at Fair Park is good as is the museum there. I'm not a native Texan, so this is not my hometown. Good luck! I hope you find activities that will help you bloom where you are planted. I love it here! (Sorry about the typing, I have my hand in a splint so hard to type).

You are very close to grapevine which is a super family friendly town with events all the time. They also have beautiful parks, botanical garden, and city pools that are well maintained and lots of fun.

You can also join a moms groups in the area which will help you figure out all the good kid spots. I am a member of the MOMS Club which has chapters in your area.
Roanoke has a neat old downtown area with great restaurants if you want to see something different on the weekend. The Fort Worth stockyards are cool. You can ride a vintage train from grapevine to fort worth and spend the day.
You are surrounded by fun things!

You have to work a little harder to find "natural" beauty in Dallas. There was just a good article in May's D magazine about hiking trails in the area. The title is Top 10 Trails for Hiking and you can find it on their website.
I have 3 small kids (ages 2-6), we live in North Dallas (south of LBJ - north of NW Hwy) so we visit the local parks and swim a lot in our pool. We also go to the zoo, the World aquarium and the butterfly garden - Discovery garden in Fair Park. We have memberships to all so it's more cost effective to just go there on a Saturday morning for an hour or two. I also love that I can take my oldest to children's theatre - which she loves thanks to Dallas Children's Theater, Eisman Center and some of the plano theaters. We also take advantage of the Dallas library free activities. They offer so much. Not sure how far these things are from Flower Mound - but one of the reasons I'm fighting my husband to not move to the suburbs. It's so easy to find free things to do in Dallas - I want to wait until they're all in school and tied up with school activities before abandoning "the city". Good luck finding things.

Sounds like you need some "country" time. Have you done the horse country tour in Denton County? Or the pick-your-own farms in our area like Duck Creek? What about the greenbelt 380 corridor? How about Lake Ray Roberts or Isle du Bois? There is even an alpaca farm in Denton! Denton County is wonderful.

There are lots of hiking trails around ... they may not be as nice as the ones I've been to in Seattle or New Mexico, but they are still fun. If you don't know where any are, you can probably visit city websites to find out or contact local naturalist organizations. We learned about some good areas by being involved with Tiny Trekkers, monthly free nature hikes for families with small kids, organized by the North Texas Master Naturalists. We go on short hikes trails nearly every week during the spring and summer. In the summer, we mostly visit water parks, the various lakes, and indoor locals. We also like Fair Park, the arboretum & zoo in Dallas, and the botanical gardens and zoo in Ft. Worth
