Surgery for Leaking

I am scheduled to get surgery to fix my leaking problem. Im not remembering the exact name of the surgery but the condition is called "Urodynamic stress incontinence". Its not the "sling" surgery, they have a new procedure that has seen better results.

I was wondering if anyone else has had this done or has thought about having it done? After 3 kids getting back into shape or being physical at all has been rough because if I run more than a block I leak through a whole pad! Im excited to get this done but a little nervous as well.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Yesterday was my surgery and it went pretty smooth! not too painful at all. I came home and slept for awhile then slept a lot last night. Today Im taking it easy and heading back to work tomorrow. I am a little sore in my stomach area but thats to be expected. The thought of not leaking puts a smile on my face! The nurse said I could resume working out in about 2 weeks so we will see how it goes! Ill probably wear a pad out of habit, lol. Thank you for all your comments! I will be taking it very easy at work, my job is a little physical but my boss and coworkers already know I will need their help and arent afraid to ask! If you are thinking about getting this done talk to your gyno thats where the ball started rolling for me! Oh yeah and the official name of the procedure I had done was a TVT-S. Thanks again~~~

Hey K.,

I posted on this site over a month ago about bladder surgery...no replies. Sorry if I'm not a big help but I did have trans obturator sling surgery one week(Sparrow) ago and I feel great! I've sneezed, walked the dog(fast) coughed(which I should try not to yet) and out of habit still wearing a pad and I have no need too! I'm still not supposed to lift for the next 6 weeks(25lbs). What took me so long?????????

My mother had the surgery last year, and the only thing I have to say....STAY DOWN!!! Do as the doctor says and stay down, don't even do mild cleaning for a bit. IF you ruin the work the surgery corrects you are going to be worse then ever. My mother takes care of my step father and he couldn't even leave it alone, so she was not able to stay down even a week, she had to go back for another surgery to try and correct the damage.

Good luck

My mom had this surgery 2 years ago ... she is a new woman! She couldn't go more then an hour or so between bathroom breaks and leaked ALL the time. Couldn't cough or sneeze without peeing her pants.

Now, she can actually sleep all night long without any problems. Even though her doctor told her it would take some time for everything to heal up and really see 'full' results... she noticed a difference the first night.... she only woke up once to pee!

I think you'll be very happy with the results.

Hi K.,
I had that surgery 1 year ago and have not leaked since. I still have some urge, but I still drink a lot of caffeine, which is a major contributor to the urge. I can't tell you much about recovery as I had a hysterectomy at the same time, which was the more major surgery to recover from. I was sore in my groin from the bladder surgery, but it eventually went away. Dr. Larry Sirls was my urologist and he is fabulous!
Good luck,

Hi K.! My mother, who is in her 60's) recently underwent surgery for the same condition. She didn't see good results through her surgery though. It may possibly be because of her age, or just her circumstances I don't know. After getting the surgery, she feels she was better off before she had it.

Not saying you shouldn't get the surgery, but educate yourself about the pros and cons of it. Then you will be able to make the best decision for yourself.

I hope all goes well for you.

Hi K.. Take heart, I had this surgery back in June and I'm a happy camper!!!! I have had the coughing/laughing/sneezing problem for aobut 10 years. Had a hysterectomy in '95. When I went to play tennis with my family and soaked myself running after the ball, that was the last straw! My dr. did the urodynamics test, told me the leak was severe and I needed to go straight for the surgical option. It wasn't bad at all! He let me know that the most pain I'd feel was from the 2 punctures in the groin where they go in to attach the sling and he was absoluetly right. You need to remember that the way you go to the bathroom will change and not to be alarmed by it. I used to be able to empty my bladder in 5 seconds flat and now I need to sit for a few and make sure I'm done. The stream changes obviously and it takes a little getting used to, especially if you have had this issue for a long period of time. Good luck, you'll be back to normal in no time! L. S.
