Hi Moms !
I was just wondering if there are any support groups for individuals and/or families for people who have suffered a Stroke. My Dad is 59, he had a stroke in Sept. According to his medical records/tests he also has 'mild dementia' as a result. I clearly do not fully understand all the medical issues...It's all so confusing. He's getting progressively more emotional. My family and I really could use some advice.
Dad's main support is my Brother, myself and his wife Chris. My brother does the heavy stuff and my sisters and I handle his legal, bills and insurance. Chris and I clean his house and keep up with shopping etc but SHE does the majority of the work directly with Dad...doctors, appts, etc. Which she offered because she's home all day, and has prior experience and now since they moved across the street from him, it's just that much easier.
My sister (live in VA) and I realized what a burden that would be on her right away. She does everything with out thinking about it....and with out complaint. No one could tell that he is only her Father-in-law. We are so happy to have that wonderful woman in our lives!! We want to give her a token of our appreciation....however nothing seems special enough.
Does anyone have any suggestions ?
Thank you.

I don't have an answer for you about support groups.
However, we have an AWESOME SIL as well, my brother's wife. They've been married 25 years and she has been behind all the best things we have done for each other. She has a unique way of rallying us all together.
At family gatherings, I (or some other family member) often publicly thank her for a specific thing that she's done. Of course we all chime in and go on and go about how giving and thoughtful and generous......she is. We all tear up, it's a beautiful thing.
I think public recognition is the best gift of all, especially for someone who gives truly without expecting anything in return.
Hope your Dad is feeling better!

Delray Medical Center/Pinecrest Rehab Hospital has a stroke support group that meets on the 2nd Wednesday of every month from 3-4:30 at Pinecrest Hospital. Call ###-###-#### for more info.
Sorry about your dad!!
Maybe since she always doing for your FIL, maybe a gift card for her to do something for herself, nails, facial, massage, or a whole day at the spa? It is so nice to have someone in your family you can rely on in a time of need! God Bless her, and your family!
