Anyone Know a Brain Injured Child in Austin?

My son, age 10, had a stroke in June. Before this happened he was a healthy, gifted child with no reason to worry about any health problems. He is recovering miraculously, but has spent the summer learning how to walk and talk (and swallow and write and read etc) again. He is an amazing, inspiring, spirited and fun child. We are trying to find another boy or girl in the Austin area who has had a similar circumstance: years of a normal life, and then a sudden change that changes just about everything. We think that we may be able to find a child like this who has had a brain injury, even if it is not from a stroke, as brain injuries lead to very similar sudden changes. The healing process is very similar too (occupational therapy, speech therapy, physical therapy).

Does anyone know a child with a similar circumstance? It could also be a different illness of any sort that was a brush with death. I think it would help him cope if he could play with someone who can understand.

As far as support groups go, we have found a brain injury support group, but would love to know if anyone knows of support groups that are geared to children with brain injury.

Please let me know if you can help with this.

Thanks!

P.,

I am so sorry to hear of your son's stroke. I would highly recommend you call Texas Parent to Parent. They are located in Austin -- but serve the whole state.

"Texas Parent to Parent is a nonprofit organization created by parents for families of children with disabilities, chronic illness and other special needs throughout the state of Texas. The majority of our staff, Board of Directors, and volunteers are parents of children with disabilities or chronic illness and have many years experience providing parent to parent support.

We offer families a place to access information and resources, a one-on-one match with a trained Supporting Parent Volunteer, someone to call or email when you just need to hear a bit of encouragement or help figuring out the next step in your journey with your child. We hope you find our services and resource directory helpful."

May God Bless your son and your entire family.

My heart goes out to you and your family!

You may want to look at the American Cancer Society. My brother had a child brain tumor... and they were a fantastic support to all of us!

Best of luck... and make sure that you seek some support for yourself!

How difficult his must have been for all your family. I would check in with Dell Children's hospital ans speak with the social work dept. Ask them if they could connect you with kids with similar injury and if they have a support group for parent and/or kids where you could meet them yourselves.

Hello. I have a cousin who was diagnosed with an infection of the brain 4 years ago while living in LA with his parents. He went from a very active, smart kid to living like an infant-he had to learn how to do every thing all over again. He is now 11 and living in Texas (his mom got a new job)and doing very very well. He still goes to therapy and tends to talk a little faster but he is as normal as the next 11 year old. It was a long hard journey for his mom and dad and family. We are all so blessed. He attends school and just got back from a camping trip with his school mates-without parents. He is so blessed. He has come so far.

P., I am so sorry to hear about your sons stroke.. I do know of someone whose 6 year old had a brain aneurysm several months ago.. Let me talk to her and see how she would feel about getting in contact with someone.. I have always wondered if she has joined a support group... If you want to send me your email and I will get back to you when I have a chance to talk to her... I know she is struggling as well, trying to adjust to a whole new way of life.

good luck.. J.

I work for a facility that provides post-acute rehabilitation for brain injuries for Adults in Dripping Springs so I have a few resources you may want to try.

The Brain Injury Association of Texas ###-###-#### has support groups and check out their website http://biatx.org/resources/go/support.html

The American Stroke association may have some programs for kids 1-888-4-STROKE

Additionally, Texas Neuro Rehab has services for children ###-###-####

Has your son been through post-acute rehabilitation? There are not any programs here in Austin for children with brain injuries but CNS 1-800-922-4994 in the Dallas area might be a great resource. http://www.neuroskills.com/cns/pediatric.shtml

Let me know if none of these resources work for you and we can brainstorm further. Take care
