Speaking of Bums...

Do you know any good tips for firming one up? I want a bum of steel!

TIA

ETA: Tee hee hee...I know what a squat is (though I have no idea if I know how to do it properly!) but the rest...it's like a foreign language!

Without seeing a personal trainer, is there a good way to figure out how to do all this the right way? I'm really talented at hurting myself (is it supposed to feel like burning acid??).

My husabdn is very fond of the CrossFit training website. They show you how to do exercizes in a real time, real life sort of way. It's worth a try.

To make sure you are doing squats correct at home, use a kitchen chair (or the couch if you watch TV during!). Put your weight on your heels (you'll feel a little off balance) while your feet are shoulder width apart. Then act like you are going to sit on the chair, let your butt 'tap' the chair and immediately stand back up and push your pelvis forward. Make sure as you stand up that you sqeeze your butt!

And yes, your butt (and probably your thighs) should feel like burning acid!!!

Weight bearing squats will REALLY lift and firm! I use a 16 kilogram kettle bell to do squats. Make sure you're doing them properly so you don't injure your knees. Put all of your weight in your heels (stand with feet shoulder width or a little more apart) and slowly lower yourself down -butt first. Hold the weight with both hands and bring your elbows down between your legs. Keep your torso straight up -don't bend or hunch over. You can come up more quickly if you like -kind of exploding upward. Running will also firm up your rear -keep it tensed while you run and it helps even more.

You could get an exercise video that focused on the butt. Such as Beachbody's Brazilian Butt Lift. I am not a Beachbody coach, but if you don't know one, I could recommend one (or you could just go to their site and buy it and get assigned to some random coach). Or you could just find something on Amazon.com. I personally like exercise videos, because I hate the idea of spending money on a gym membership and then trying to find time to go there (made harder by the fact that I have 2 kids and no car when my husband isn't home). A good video will show you how to the moves properly, and then you can just do them without the video if you don't want to use it.
