Son Waking for Water

For the last two months our 2 year old son has been waking a lot in the night for water. I was sort of convinced in the beginning that he was waking from bad dreams, being too cold/hot, growing pains, or something of the sort and that it would go away. However, it has not yet gone away and I am getting really exhausted from waking up continually to give him water and put him back to bed and waking up to feed our 8 month old daughter. Our son in genuinely thirsty because he will take a nice big drink then go straight back to sleep. I have considered this as a sign of diabetes but we do not have any diabetics in our family (either side) and he is not overly thirsty during the day. Is this something I should worry about or do you think it is just a phase that will pass eventually? I don't mind keep getting up 2-6 times in the night with him, I just don't want this to be a red flag I should be paying attention to.

What can I do next?

Sounds like he has found a way to see you in the middle of the night! When my son started this I decided to put a sippy in his bed. It had water in it, and we called it his nightime sippy. Maybe sit down with your son in the daytime and let him know that he is going to have a water sippy in his bed and isn't that exciting!!?? Have him help pick one out, my son picked out a special one at walmart, and then you will probably have to get up a few times and remind him that it's there. But hopefully within the week you will be back to sleeping through the night and he will too!

The signs to watch for as far as diabetes would be excessively wet diapers or wetting the bed, being very very hungry and of course thirsty all of the time. I don't think it matters with Type I diabetes if there is a family history so much, so it might just ease your mind to talk to the pediatrician about it.

If he's fine medically, have you thought about just leaving a sippy cup of water where he can reach it? That way, he can wake up, have a drink and put himself to sleep?

If he were diabetic, he'd be urinating a lot, his pee would have very little color, and he'd be thirsty all the time. It is worth watching, though, to be sure he doesn't get worse.

My grandson has had a leak-proof sippy cup in the corner of his bed for a couple of years. He's more interested in drinking water at night than when he's busy playing during the day.

My DD is 19 mo and wakes up multiple times for water, it is so tiring. She is still nursing and really just wants to nurse back to sleep but I am trying to stop her so I offer her water. maybe he is doing it out of habbit if you just stop night nursing or night bottles? It has been hard for us as she needs to drink to fall back alseep bc that is what she is used to doing.
I dk if this is a problem or anything so sorry but I would ask his dr. if he is getting enough water daily and passing enough urine then he should be okay, I like to have one drink (of milk) a night.
after you talk to your dr about it, to reduce your waking can you just leave a cup out on a night stand or soemthing so he can help himself? my dd just cant do that, she is not there yet....ahh no sleep for us moms lol

I agree with all the other moms. Give him a sippy cup of water when he goes to bed. My grandchildren adjusted to that right away. They didn't even wake up to take a drink. They held onto it as they went to sleep.

I'm thinking it's at least as hot in your area as it is in ours. He may not drink enough water during the day time but then again, my grandkids wanted a drink of water in the winter too.

I wake up for a drink in the middle of the night! LOL.

We put our 5 and 3 year old both to bed with sippy cups (we now actually use stainless steel water bottle that flips open to a straw....keeps COLD all night long!) of ice water. We have done this from baby on. That way they can drink when they are thirsty and don't have to wake us up!

And we have had NO problems with night time accidents because of this either!
