My son was absolutely BEAUTIFUL as a young child. He was born with long hair, killer long eye lashes (i still wish mine would look like that) and gorgeous features. As a baby dressed in all blue I still got oh SHE is so pretty! As a young boy he got that too some even after having a short little boy hair cut. Now at 10 the "popular" thing to do among his friends is to have long hair again. One of his friends has the most beautiful long, blonde hair... from the back many people think he is a girl. My advise is let your son be... if he likes long hair, leave it long until he wants it cut. When someone makes a commit about your cute little girl (either just say thanks and totally ignore them) or politely tell them thank you, you know your SON is adorable. Eventually your son will start speaking up too and tell them "I'm a boy!" so you don't have much longer to worry about it. And as M R. said there are many girls who LOVE to wear spiderman and other "boy" character clothes. ;)

If it doesn't bother you or him, why waste time worrying about it? At the same time, however, many people still associate longer hair with being a girl (just like you attributed spidermen clothing as a 'boy trait'...certainly there are some 3 year old girls out there who would love wearing stuff like that all the time).

My son had long blond curly hair. I just loved it. I once had a friend (who is no longer a friend) tell me in a rude way that it was "time" to cut his hair. I ignored her. He wasn't ready and neither was I. When he started school (at age 5) he went in for a "big boy hair cut". When he started school we both felt it was "time" for the locks to go. Until then, I just corrected people when they mistook his as a girl. In my opinion, he looked nothing like a girl. Do what you and your son are comfortable with. No other opinion matters, nor does the mistaken gender, shake it off. Good luck and enjoy the locks while they last. Once your get that first real hair cut, it's never the same again. :-(

Yes, with my second son who had delicate features and long hair. People just follow the hair cue, I think.

So, my son has short hair. (He gets it cut every 5 weeks.) Nonetheless, he has been mistaken for a girl 3 times! Sometimes, it is not the hair it is the lashes, the eyes and other features. In my humble opinion, he's just a beautiful little guy.:-) When it happens, I just laugh and correct the person and say it's better than a girl being mistaken for a boy. :-)

It's funny, my little sister always had the opposite problem. She had this gorgeous obviously feminine face, but she kept her hair very short and wore "boy" clothes, so everyone thought she was a boy until she hit puberty. It never bothered her, and she just corrected people. It's a shame that we still live in such a gender-biased society where long hair must equal girl and short hair must equal boy. I think it's awesome that he loves his long hair, and you should keep it until he wants to cut it.
