How Do You like Your Hair?

Ok, this one might seem a bit strange but here goes. My 17 (almost 18) mo. old son was born with quite a bit of hair. He's had trims but never to much length taken off except for his bangs. The problem is, he has gotten these little curls on the back and I just love them and hate to cut them off but wonder if there is a "socially unacceptable" point for little boys to have the back of their hair that long. My 9 yr old is afraid that my little one will start to look like a girl! What does everybody think? Do I really really have to cut off those beautiful curls this soon? Thanks in advance mamas for all your input. Shannon

So What Happened?

Thanks for your input everybody! I'm gonna let his hair grow. I've had the front and sides trimmed but not the back. It's just to darn cute to cut right now. Thanks again!

This is totally up to you. I think basing your decision on what is socially acceptable is the wrong way to decide. If you don't mind that people may mistake him for a girl, then it doesn't really matter what his hair looks like. It's just whatever you want. I chose to keep my son's hair short because I love the little boy look. I know of a couple of boys who have had longer hair though, my nephew for one. His mom cut it when he was two because she got tired of having to always say "no, he's a boy"

My 14 month old is mistaken for a girl quite often because he has longer curly hair. I love it! I don't feel it's socially unacceptable. I'll cut his hair eventually, but I don't feel any reason to rush. He's too young to care and it's not a hazard... It's really what you're comfortable with.

Don't cut it! My 7 mo. old baby boy was born with tons of hair and we've barely touched it since he was born. Just be prepared for people who assume your baby is a girl and politely correct them as we do! At first my family kept on my husband and myself to cut it but when we made our feelings clear about how we'd like his hair, they've backed off.

It's your kid, do as you wish! Good luck!

my son just turned 6 last December. He too was born with thick, dark hair that curls at the ends. I love his hair & hate cutting it. I have shaved it before & yea, I know he's cute that way, but I really love the way it is long. I just shaved it again few weeks ago but within a year or so it'll be past his shoulders again. no, I don't see a problem with keeping it long like that as long as its kept nice looking (tangle free, clean,... ). I'll see if I can post a picture on here of the backside of his hair to show you but his has been to the bottom of his shoulder blades before.

There is no reason for you to HAVE to choose. You are the Mom. No one outside of you and the father have any say in the matter.

:)
If you want to leave them long, leave them long.

Now, as for myself personally, with little boys, it does tend to be a little easier to keep them short. It's easier to wash and care for and things tend to just brush right out. However, my son, ever since he could talk has asked if he could grow his hair out like his Dad. (My husband grows his hair out to donate to Locks of Love.) I made a deal with him when he was three that as soon as he could take care of his own hair, he could grow it out and I'd support him. But the first time I had to groom him, it was time for a hair cut.
He's four now and excited that his hair is over his ears. He keeps it neatly brushed and washed and has fun expressing himself with some unique hair creations like Mohawks and making it stand on end.

My mom went through this with my brother, finally she just got tired of people thinking he was a baby girl, even with blue footballs and trucks on the front of his shirts. I think he was nearly 2. I say do what you want, when you do get it cut you can always snitch a curl and use it for a baby book.

I have three boys and my last one came out with curls - I love the curls!! When he was just over one I reluctantly let a hairdresser "trim" the curls because in the back his hair gets out of control. My husband felt that people would think he was a girl and wanted him to look good - yeah they butchered the curls and so I thought I would never see them again. But I took him about a year later to someone else and explained the deal that I wanted the curl but I wanted the length to make him look more like a boy. And amazingly she brought the curl back. And yes he does look like a boy. You may have to take him more often than a boy who just has straight short hair but to me its worth it. And your 9 year old may hear someone say what a cute girl. People make assumptions about people all the time. I just say oh he's a boy and move on. When I hear it to frequently I know its time for another trim.
Good luck but I think there is nothing wrong with curls in a boys hair!!

It is sooo up to you when to cut his hair. Plus if you look at the way teen guys have their hair your sons hair is in fashion lol. My lil guys hair is curling at the ends and we havent cut his hair either. He is the same age going to be 18month on March 12th. You can joke with your 9 yr old that his brother is in style with his hair like that.

I wouldn't cut them off! You do what YOU like! Plus, my daughter has naturally curly hair like that and I was always told if you cut them off to early they may not grow back. So I'd leave them as is! :)

I didn't want to cut my sons hair for the same reason. I loved those little spiral curls. My husband thought it was to long so he shaved his head. My son liked it for awhile, but now he asks if he can have long hair. My daughter and I both have long hair and he feels different since he is with us most of the time. I don't think there is anything wrong with long hair on little boys. You can let him make that decision later.

NO!

With my first son, (who is my second child) my mother in law was on my a_ _ because I gave him his first haircut almost on his first birthday. With my second son (my baby) I waited until after his second birthday. Actually, he had to have surgery on his eyes and I cut it only to keep it out of the way during/after his surgery.

My mother in law was up my A _ _ for NOT cutting his hair (he looks like a girl, blah blah)

I LOVED his hair, and so did he. Rubbing his head/hair at naptime and bedtime and just plain sitting on the couch relaxing together was our "thing" and it was almost painful to cut it off. I've always been an advocate of little boys having little boy haircuts, but when it's your baby, you can ABSOLUTELY wait until he's a little boy :)

Well, I am Native American and my little cousin has VERY long hair that his mom braids. I think it is VERY adorable so when my son's were born I was gonna do this. My first son had curly reddish blonde hair (I'm native American and my husband is hispanic? I don't know either) and my second had crazy straight black hair but my husband cut it behind my back one day. It looked cute so we kept it! So it's up to you. At that age....socially exceptible isn't really an issue.

You know, i think one of the great parts about little kids is that they're so stinkin' cute, you can do their hair however you want. It's not like you're intentionally teaching him to be girl-ish...just to enjoy his natural gorgeous features! Long live the locks!

Shannon, I am sooo jealous! None of my kids have curls, if I had a little boy with curls I would not cut them, at least not until he starts being mistaken for a girl maybe. But he is still a baby, I wouldn't worry about it for awhile. That's my two cents...good luck, enjoy those beautiful curls! :) D. R.

You should not be worried about what is socially acceptable for a boy that age. Why don't you wait until he can ask you for a hair cut? Perhaps he likes it!
Also, what will protect that noggin when he runs into your coffee table?

I have a nephew who is 8 years old, and he has always had long hair. My sister simply didn't cut it when he was younger because she liked it long. Now, he gets to decide if he wants it cut, but he always chooses to keep it long. Yes, lots of people thinks he is a girl. It used to bother him, but doesn't seem to mind now.

I have another nephew who just turned 2, and he used to have the long hair with curls. Although, my SIL LOVED the curls, she got sick of people thinking he was a girl. They cut off his curls about 6 months ago.....and he's still super cute!
