My 3 week year old infant has been sneezing since she was born---at the hospital and till now...I'm concerned that it might be a cold? The pediatrician at the hospital says that --that's how babys clear their nose. How do I know if it's a cold, allergies, or a dusty environment?

What can I do next?

come to think of it my baby did the same thing. he doesn't anymore like he used to. i think babies sneeze as they are getting used to their environment etc. maybe allergies but i doubt it. if there is no runny nose or super uncomfortable signs then i wouldn't worry too much. just keep an eye on it. we have dogs so i thought maybe he was getting used to the dander..who knows.

Most babies sneeze a lot in their first few months of life. It is common and harmless. You would know if your baby was sick, he would be extra cranky, oozing snot and possibly have a fever. If she sneezes out thick green snot, then I would be concerned. Allergies generally take at least a year to develop, so you can be pretty sure it isn't allergies or even a dusty environment. Both of my kids sneezed a lot for the first six weeks or so, then it suddenly stopped. I wouldn't stress over it unless she seems uncomfortable or not feeling well.

Hi Cel,
Completely normal. My daughter did it for quite a while. The pediatrician told me that a newborn can't have seasonal allergies as they haven't been exposed to the allergens to develop an allergy. You can use a little saline and the bulb to remove the mucus if you are worried.
Sincerely,
L.

It is totally normal. Unless there is green mucus coming out, don't worry about it. Your babies body is working as it should. If there are no other symptoms, just relax and enjoy your new baby.
