Short Nail Beds (Toes)

Our son, now 15 months and a strong walker/ climber has really short nail beds on his toes. His toe nails then grow away from the toe and splay out. It hasn't been a problem thus far and the ped said not to worry. Now that it's warming up he needs proper shoes however and it seems his toenails are biting into his adjacent toes when he's got shoes on. Apart from keeping them trimmed any thoughts or suggestions?

What can I do next?

One of mine had this. Keeping them trimmed is obviously essential. Beyond that, we put him in open-toe sandals in the summer as a baby. They were the kind that strapped across the instep and around the ankle so that they were secure and easy to walk in, but with lots of toe space.

ETA: Yes Jill, you can get wide width toddler shoes, and those are essential in the winter.

It's important to keep him in shoes that fit - which is tough since he's growing so fast.
Toes need lot's of room - they should never be squished together or butting up against the front of his shoes.
Our son was mostly barefoot until he was 3 and outside more - in the house, no shoes were needed.

Take him to a foot doc, they're the experts on feet....a pediatrician is fine for general growth and common kid illnesses but when it's something specific that's a problem one needs to go to the one that is that specialist.

Wide-width shoes, perhaps? I've not had to look for them for toddlers so I don't know if that is a thing that exists. If not, then shoes with soft material tops would be better than stiff material, and open toe shoes/sandals in the summer.
