My 12 month old developed a really bad diaper rash that has some bloody spots. What would be the best ointment to put on it. I feel really bad her bottom is so sore. I change her often and try to keep it as dry as possible. Any advice will be very helpfull!
Thank you everyone for the helpfull advice. I think she might have had a reaction from eating spaghetti. It is getting better by putting on a bunch of rash cream. Thanks again!!

Has she been on antibiotics lately? Even if it's a no, she could have a yeast infection. A prescription from the doc is all that will help it. The only time my son got horrible diaper rashes with blood is when he had been on antibiotics and we found out he had yeast infections not just a diaper rash.

Per our ped , the diaper creams and ointments help prevent. To heal, once bad - air dry and use equal parts neosporin or polysporin and Cortisone cream. The corisone heals and the poly or neo mix with it so it doesn't hurt the open sores. Lathering this on a couple times, helps. When this happened to us, didn't wipe butt, but washed in shower, then air dried and used this mixture to heal. Gone in a day, but keep it up until totally gone or it will come back.

There is this stuff called dypro-tex and I had to buy it on-line. My freind turned me onto this product. I use this first after my son's butt would be dry from removing the previous diaper. I would put that stuff on, butt-paste on the top of that and then neosporine(sp). I mean a healty amount of all three. My son's bottom was a lot better just over night. In between diaper changes I would let him run around without a diaper as well and I would only wipe it if he went #2. Hope this helps!

Have you tried Vusion ointment? It is a prescription medication. That's what my pediatrician prescribed when my son had a really bad diaper rash. He even had sore places that bled. You don't need very much, a little goes a long way. But, it's very expensive. You may want to see if your doctor has some samples. Another home remedy is putting Maalox on the area. If possible, leaving her diaper off for awhile will help too. Using Cetaphil and/or water to wash her instead of diaper wipes, may help too. Letting her play in a bath of warm (not hot) water can sometimes help soothe her bottom. Good Luck! I've been there.

Hi there! We just finished up with my daughter's diaper rash. It's a process but here goes! My doc recommended lotromin anti fungal cream three times a day and cortisone 1% ointment three other times a day. Don’t use any wipes and just clean with a warm wash cloth if they have a dirty diaper. A wet diaper doesn't need any cleaning just apply the ointments. (They actually don’t ever need wipes b/c urine is sterile and has dried off by the time you change her anyways.) You can put diaper rash cream on over the lotramin but the cortisone ointment shouldn't need it. ALSO three times a day soak her in the tub/sink with warm water and baking soda. There were two day’s where I would soak her while feeding her. haha!!! But it worked wonders! We used the Maalox a few time too. It seemed to sting her but helped as well. Best of luck!!! It's a process!!!!

My grandmother's old remedy was to take flour and brown it in a cast iron skillet. do not use any oil or nothing. Just keep stiring it over medium heat until the flour turns brown. Between every diaper change apply like wou would apply baby powder. not only will it keep her dry, there is something in the flour that will heal it. I used it with all of my four kids and my friend can testify that it works. You can store it in a ziplock bag, jar, etc. I do not like using any oitmnent with it, because it will make it moist and caked up.

If you have Aquaphor and Maalox around the house, use the two of them together to mix a paste. This is what my pediatrician had me do with my son's severe diaper rash. It's the basic combo for the prescription you receive. I do not have an exact ratio for you, but start with a little glob of Aquaphor and add in drops of Maalox, stir. The consistency should look like that of any other rash ointment (i.e. Destin, Balmex).

When my daughter had a horrible diaper rash, her pediatrician recommended Butt Paste. We also had to use a prescription ointment 3-4 times a day. It had an antibiotic, antifungal and cortisone in it. The prescription ointment helped the most.
You can let your daughter "air out" too. Let her run around without a diaper for 15-20 minutes a couple times a day.
Good luck!! Diaper rashes can be so awful!! Keep the bath water cooler than normal so it will be soothing to her. My daughter's rash was so bad she refused to sit down in the tub b/c it hurt too bad.

BAG BALM!! It's in a green can and SHOULD be right in the same area as desitin and A&D ointment in your store. If not, ask the pharmacist where it is. Farmer's use this on their cows teats to treat and protect them. I was using a warm washcloth when my girls got rashes (figuring wipes would sting too much), but the nurse said the washcloth could hurt too. I also found that A&D with zinc helps, it doesn't seem to burn as much as Desitine. Good luck!

Like a number of other responses suggested, I'll bet it's a yeast infection too. Both of my kids had those sorts of rashes, and they were so bad we ended up at the dermatologists for prescription anti-fungals, since the otc ones didn't help. After the prescriptions didn't help much better I heard about mixing the powder from probiotic capsules with a little cool water to make a runny paste (more liquidy). When you change the diaper, clean the entire area carefully with Cetaphil and warm water. Let the area dry completely. A little bare bottom air time won't hurt! Then pat on the probiotic mixture and let it dry. After that, put on your diaper cream. I used the creamy Desitin on my kids, but only after the store brand at Walmart was changed. You'll be amazed at how quickly the probiotics will clear it up! Good luck!

Lots of people are telling you yeast infection, but it doesn't sound like that to me. My son used to get diaper rash like that, open sores that oozed. We tried everything! What finally worked for us was to mix Boudreaux Butt Paste (you can get it at Target) and hydrocortisone. I would mix it on the back of my hand and slather it on his bottom. He began to feel better that day. I did it with every diaper change until it was healed. We went through this a couple of times until we discovered that he had an allergy to something in some tomato sauces. We stopped giving him tomatoes and didn't have the problem again with him. I still use it for the other children!

Once a diaper rash reaches that broken skin stage, you need to keep her bottom very clean, by washing it with soap and warm water at each diaper change, and patting dry, then use a warm hair blower to get the skin very dry before applying Desitin to all the rash. Washing her is going to burn, but has to be done, to get rid of the bacteria. She may be allergic to the wipes you are using, and she may even be allergic to the diapers you use. You'll just have to experiment a bit to determine what causes her rash. My son had extremely sensitive skin, and I found this to be the quickest way to get him healed up.

It got really bad once, with blisters and such, and after taking her to the doctor they prescribed us Riley's Rash Cream, which was super expensive but fabulous, and twice a day we put Neosporin on it. Im sure by now, you have read it all, and hopefuly the rash is long gone...I did want to tell you what I did for the only diaper rash my son ever had. I haven't seen it on the last 20 replies so here goes. My son actully has a really bad reaction to an ear infection medicine, where it gives him baddddddd diarhea. The first 2 days I did the butt paste, which seem to hurt him, then I did corn starch/baby powder/hydrocortizone...one of it worked. I decided to do what my mother always did put good old vaseline on his butt and the diaper itself. Literally within 2 days it was almost completely gone, and it didn't irritate him at all. Another thing when he gets really dry patches of skin, lotions dont seem to do the trick, so I just rub vaseline on him after a bath and by the morning they are almost healed. Hope this helps. vasenline is cheap and does the trick for me, maybe it'll help you too.

Have you talked to your dr? Sometimes this depevelopes into a yeast infection and you have to get an antibiotic ointment to clear it up. I have also gone through this with my son recently. We used several methids until I called the dr and we had the antibiotic ointment in cleared up in like 12 hours. Maybe not that quickly but it helped. I have also used triple paste, which worked on my other son, desitin ointment not the creamy, make sure you are using ointments and are rubbing them into the skin. I put about a half a bottle of Mylanta and a cup of Aquapohor in the blender. This is key to getting it mixed. Otherwise you get a slimy mess. I then put the mixture in tupperware and put one container at all the places I change the baby. It takes a good 10 days but it cleared up and has never come back.

A really bad diaper rash as you are describing may really be a yeast infection. When the skin sort of breaks like that...it's so painful for the child when the urine hits it. The best thing, after cleaning really well, is desitin (or other zinc-based ointment) followed by globs of petroleum jelly really smeared on, to keep the surface of the skin from coming in contact with the urine. That will NOT cure a yeast infection, however, you'll need a prescription ointment from the doctor. You may hate to have to take them to the doctor for this, but you will be AMAZED at the difference one application of the prescription ointment will make. Boys as well as girls can get yeast infection diaper rash. Oftentimes, you will see thrush in their mouths as well.... (sort of whitish spots on their tongue.) If they have thrush in the mouth, the doctor will prescribe a solution to squirt in the mouth, too. It's not really that dangerous to have a yeast infection, but if you've ever had one yourself, you know how uncomfortable it can be. If you have a good relationship with your pediatrition, they may even prescribe medications for it without an office visit. If that is what it is, and you get the prescription ointment...hold on to the leftovers...your child may develop it again and then you can just use the ointment and avoid all the delay and pain. Good luck!

This just happened to my 11 month old son. Never had diaper rash before, so I was baffled! I used Balmex, not the cream, but the original. The original is much thicker than the cream. I changed him every 1 1/2 - 2 hours, made sure he was dry after wiped, and slathered on the Balmex. I also read to try to keep a diaper off for as long as you could, so I would change him and put him in his crib for 15 mins or so to 'air out'. My son had blister looking spots as well and it was so painful for him (and for me to see him like that!!!). Try the sensative wipes or a warm wash cloth too, that seemed to help. My daughter gets severe diaper rash when she's sick. It's no fun that's for sure. First thing you need to do is stop using wipes. You can use a washcloth with warm water until the rash clears up. Baby wipes have some chemicals in them that can actually make the rash burn when it comes it contact with the wipe. And don't actually wipe the area, sort of just pat it enough to get the urine off. If she poops, rinse her bottom off in the sink. We always use Balmex for diaper rash and it works really well for us. You need to make sure that you're putting on a super thick layer. We don't even rub it in. You want it to make a nice barrier between the skin and the diaper. If you're rubbing it in like lotion, it's not doing it's job. If that doesn't work in a day or two,or the rash gets worse, call the doctor.

Hi C.... my daugther had a horrid rash following an ear infection and antibiotics. I summed it up to a yeast infection. It looked awful and painful, it was bright red, raised and looked blistered with some bloody spots. I bought some over the counter rash treatment called "TriplePaste" it's super thick and helped her from getting additional chaffing/rubbing from diapers and excessive changing of diapers and wipes. The cream and her "free air" time helped it heal about 80% and then stopped working. I would highly recommend allowing her some air time whenever you can. I tried to do it right after she fell asleep so I could keep the diaper under her but allow her to get some fresh air on her bottom. That really helps as well. The more air time the better. Once I realized the last little bit of her rash wasn't going away I called the doctor and told him what was going on and that I assumed it was a yeast infection. He prescribed some medicine and when I went to pick it up the pharmacist said that I could save $33 dollars by buying the same thing over the counter. She had me buy Lotramin (sp?) it's an antifungal cream generally used for athlete's foot. I was unsure at first and asked whether it was the same potentcy, medicine, effectiveness, etc. and the pharmacist reassured me it was. I asked how often I was supposed to use it and she said twice a day (NOT every time you change her diaper). This cream took care of it in a couple days and I felt tons better for her. If the above doesn't help and her bottom gets worse or stays the same for a few days I would seek your physician's advice. I hope her little bottom gets healed quickly.

Make sure your daughter's bottom is completely dry before you put a new diaper on. Do you let your her have "naked time"? This will help air out the diaper rash, and dry up the oozing spots. You can play with her for 15-20 minutes a day in an area where it doesn't matter if she tinkles on the floor (linoleum in the kitchen, or put down a couple of blankets). This really helped when my kids had bad diaper rash. I also agree with everyone who says stop using commercial wipes. I kept a roll of paper towels and a squirt bottle of plain water on my changing table.

It could be a yeast infection. I'd have the doctor check it out just to be safe, and if it is, ask for Riley's Butt Cream - it's a prescription.
They will likely suggest getting something like lotrimin (found in the "athlete's foot" section of the pharmacy), and to get something called "Bag Balm". It comes in a green tin, and is usually over with the lotion's. It works MUCH MUCH better than Aquafor, Vaseline, Desitin, whatever. We call it the miracle or magic balm.

After 2 days of using it, my daughter had no more bloody diaper rash. my pediatrician recommended it. it's a little pricy, but it's well worth the price. I never use anything else. As a matter of fact, that's what I give at baby showers because I swear by it so much.

hi C.. if after you have tried all that you try, and it doesn't go away, or gets worse, it may be a yeast infection. out of my 5 kids, 3 of them had yeast infections. and it def sounds like what you have described. total redness, bloody, seeping, rash like areas, etc. you can call your pediatrician and see if they will just call you something in, or i just ended up getting something over the counter. just use it sparingly. if it is a yeast infection, NO other diaper rash meds will work. i tried it all. and it only got worse. good luck with your little one. i feel for the both of you! (oh! try not to use soap down there in the area. the perfumes from the soaps can actually make it worse!)

Put my son in the yeast injection category also. I forget what our ped recommended but your responses from other moms do sound familiar.
Good luck

I am sorry to hear that you are having this problem. Both of my children expierenced severe diaper rash and this was the advice my peditrician gave me. It really worked so give it a try. You can get all of these items at your local store Auqaphor ointment, Maloxx, A zinc oxide based diaper rash cream. Mix equal parts of all 3 of these together in a container until they are well blended then apply it to your daughters bottom. The Maloxx will help cool and soothe the skin, the Aquaphor will help heal the skin and the diaper rash cream will help protect the skin. I used to mix a bunch of this up and keep in in a closed container to have around, then at the slightest sign of a rash I would use it. I hope this helps.

We used a hair dryer on low after every change and then would slather on Desitin, A&D, or Dr,, Budraux's Butt Paste (a southern cream that is great) We also let ours go without a diaper for a while every day if we could. The dryer really works! If it does not improved, be aware that they can have a yeast infection and might need a prescription.

The two best ointments I have used is Triple Paste, which you can get at Kroger's or Babies R Us or a mixture of Aquaphor and Maalox 1:1. The Aquaphor and Maalox works the best for my son. If your baby's diaper rash is severe, you may want to call the pediatrician and see if they can look at it. If it's a yeast infection, they can either give you an over the counter med or they'll tell you to use Lotrimin.
Another tip is, to keep the diaper off her as much as you can and let the rash dry out. We usually just put some toys in the bathtub and let my son play in there... when he pees, it's easy to pull him right out and clean everything up quickly. If it's nice outside, let her run around naked outside...

no time to read down and see if anyone else suggested this already, but my daughter was prone to diaper rashes as an infant and we were told to get a mixture of AQUAFOR & MALOX -- you can get it mixed up from the pharmacy, or buy the 2 and mix it on your own. Our ped. wrote a prescription to get it from the pharmacy.
It works as a barrier and acid reducer -- was very helpful.
Best wishes, I know it's not fun!

Have you tried Beadreux's Butt Cream? I'm sure I spelled it wrong, but it is great. You can get it at any pharmacy or Wal-Mart type of store.
