Really Bad Diaper Rash - Delaware,OH

One of my kids once had a terrible diaper rash that would not go away, even after I tried all the things listed here by previous posters. When I called the pediatrition hoping for a prescription, he told me to dab a little Phillips Milk of Magnesia on it after every change. I thought that sounded really weird, but it worked like a charm!

If nothing is working i would just go ahead and go to the doctor! They can prescribe something for you, so you dont have to go through every diaper rash cream there is. Also.. sometimes baby wipes can make it worse( at least in my son they did) Even the sensitive ones seemed to really irritate him. Try just using a warm wet washcloth and baby body wash each time to get the area clean.. then let her run around with no diaper on as others suggested. That always worked for my kiddo. :)

Aquaphor and milk of magnesia(sp?) mixed at a 2-to-1 ratio. The pharmacy gave me the recipe when my 2nd kiddo had a really bad rash!

The very best thing is not having a diaper on as much as humanly possible.
It sounds crazy for a 9 month old, I know, but air is the very best thing. After a bath, let her run naked and get really dry. After a diaper change, leave the diaper off for a while.
My daughter got a horrible diaper rash. Turned out she was allergic to disposable diapers. I switched to cloth but rarely had her in diapers because I was afraid it would come back. She was so easy to potty train because she wasn't attached to her diapers.
I agree that corn starch is good, but make sure she doesn't have a yeast infection because that won't go away by itself.

My roommate swears that putting beast milk on diaper rash works, just dab it on with your fingers and let it air dry... My 4 month old hasn't had one yet, so I don't know for myself, but it's worth the try... (If you are breastfeeding... lol) Best part is, it's free!

Try Bag Balm. It isn't with all of the baby stuff, I think it is with the adult lotions. It is in a green tin and is all natural.

I've also had really good luck with Boudreaux's Butt Paste.

What we do when she has a nasty diaper rash is we wash the area really well and we let her run around nakid for at LEAST 30 min...since its nice, let him run in the back yard..AIR is your best friend. When we put on the diaper creme (I am a HUGE fan of the Target Brand) and put it on REALLY REALLY THICK.
My daycare person said to put cornstarch in the diaper..I have never done it but they say it works. Change the diapers often but give LOTS of air time. should clear up by Sunday.

Yeast infection rashes are usually the ones that don't clear up with diaper creams. It is usually in a spotty type pattern too.

You can get a prescription, but the over the counter antifungal creams (think athlete's foot) work just as well and no extra expense of the Dr. An over the counter antifungal won't hurt her either if that's not what it is. Pretty much any time my sons had a rash that wouldn't go away it was yeast.
Wash her bottom with cloth wipes or paper towels just wet with regular water, make sure it's dry then apply the antifungal cream, at every change. After 2-3 days you will see marked improvement and it is usually totally gone in max of a week.

One thing that worked wonders for my babies was letting them soak in baking soda water. Put about a tablespoon in with running water.

Mix 1/4 cup aquaphor with 2 TBSP Maalox. Mix with an electric mixer. Apply generously. It is a miracle cream that will work fast and help prevent diaper rash. Works like a charm!!!

Has she been eating solids yet? If she has, she might be having a reaction to one of the foods. My daughter would get the most painful rashes from blueberries, to the point where her skin would bleed. It was heartbreaking.

I agree with others, let it air out as much as possible, and only apply the ointments and creams to very dry skin.

I second the yeast infection. arbonne is what worked on my sons. take her off of juice in case it is and all sugar. give her whole grain products wheat bread and such. get her to a doc for nystasin for a yeast infection. and absolutely no sugar if it is. diabetic sugar and no juice that was the only thing that worked on my son. I tried every rash meds and every other trick in the book. if he gets sugar its back within 24 hrs and it doesnt go away till I get him off sugar again.

2 suggestions: Pinxav - awesome stuff and takes care of almost everything. If Pinxav doesn't work (or Resinol it's pretty much the same stuff) it might be yeast. Our dr suggested over the counter Lamisil.

Yeast infection probably.

You need to take your baby to the Doctor.
Don't guess at it.

For future reference, for diaper creams... I have found the Burt's Bees "Baby Bee diaper ointment' to be GREAT! It rocks.

But, you need to have your baby checked by the Doctor, before it gets worse.

Don't self diagnose. Some things may even make it worse.

We used Triple Paste for bad diaper rash when our son had diarrhea and it really burned his bum. Our pediatrician also suggested the "butt paste" which is Aquaphor mixed with Malalox until it forms a paste, which we had good results with, too.

I also tried to give him a little "air time" after his bath, to make sure everything got well dried out, then put a really good coating on before bedtime.

Our girls got bad diaper rash - we used Pinksav or Pinxav (sp?) which is bought at CVS or Walgreens behind the pharmacy. This is a pink cream that is really think (stains clothing) and worked wonders. That's all we used once we started.

My son had a terrible diaper rash and tried all of the creams/lotions out there and I finally changed diapers (from Pampers to Huggies) and it went away. You might want to give it a try. Good luck!

I agree that if it's bad you should have a doctor look at it. Yeast is a possibility, but babies can also get staph inf on their bottoms. It looks like a blister...

I have to add to the long list of recommended diaper creams. I LOVE calmoseptine. The pharmacist will likely have to order it for you. It's only $8 a tube and it's wonderful. I use it like the father in "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" used Windex. ;) It great for poison ivy, mosquito bites... Anytime my daughter gets a bite or scrape she says, "I need lotion." I've trained her well. :)

Something that no one else has mentioned........allergy to the diapers you are using? My son developed an allergy to all diapers (except Huggies). Even just using one, he broke out in a really bad diaper rash. I had tried all the creams, and tried prescription creams from the doctor. Then, I tried nothing to see if that would work (not even wipes, just water to wash with)......still didn't clear. Until, I changed diapers to the expensive Huggies. After a few days of that, it cleared up! Then, every time I put one on him that wasn't Huggies, he would break out again. Weird and probably rare, but that's what happened to our son. Later in life (4 or 5 yo) he also developed an allergy to life vests for swimming.......they must use the same material/chemicals that most diapers use.

Take her to the doctor. My son developed a nasty diaper rash around that age and he needed a prescription ointment.

wipe it clean, pat it dry, and rub breast milk into it. Leave her diaperless in the sun for a little bit. Works every time! Breastmilk is so awesome!!

soaking in the tub-she absolutely cannot sit in a dirty diaper-please tell me you are using cotton, cloth diapers

It might be a yest infection which can occur in boys and girls alike. When my son was about that age he had the same issue. It turned out to be a yeast infection (not to get confused with a vaginal infection) and the doctor gave us a cream called Vusion. Worked like a charm!! Good luck!!!

Are you mixing the desitin with eh aquaphor? The Aquaphor cream you should be mixing is 50/50 Aquaphor and Maylox. This usually clears things up in a day. If you are doing everything you said and noting is working you need to see a ped. If you are bf it could be thrush in which case desitin or aveeno will never work. Also is could be an allergy.

You've gotten lots of responses! I agree with the woman who said to stop using wipes while she has the rash. Our dr. told us to use a soft, wet, warm washcloth instead of wipes whenever our girls had diaper rashes (even if they're the unscented ones). We stopped using Desitin b/c it seemed to burn the rash. Sometimes we'd use A&D (or the store brand). Good luck! Hopefully your doctor can help!

It is probably a yeast infection. My son was on strong antibiotics for a long time as a baby and would get them all the time. If a rash didn't get better after a few days I would go to the store and buy athlete's foot creme (Lotramine suggested by the dr.) and use it like diaper rash creme. If it is yeast, it will start to get better in 2-3 diaper changes. Generic works fine.

When my daughter had really bad diaper rash (she was very little because I didn't realize I shouldn't use wipes on a newborn) our doctor prescribed Bactroban Cream (Mupirocin Calcium Cream 2%.) I switched to Pampers Swaddlers and then Baby Dry diapers and a wash cloth and when she got a little older I only used Pampers sensitive wipes that were alcohol free. I kept Aquaphor on her at all times and used Desitin if bumps tried to appear. During one of her check ups I told our family doctor that she tended to get diaper rash a lot, he said she was old enough to use baby powder on. I got the Goldbond Baby Powder and it worked wonders. That will save you the head ache of having to let your baby run around naked. As long as you keep that skin dry, it should clear up. Definitely seek medical advice in case you do need a prescription like the one I described above. Good luck. Also, my daughter started potty training at 15 months (both # 1 and #2) and never looked back because she learned that if her BM went into the potty she didn't get diaper rash. She'll be three in November and she wears panties to bed - no more diapers! Maybe yours will do the same.

Go without a diaper for a night or all day. If you can't go all day, at least go without the diaper for naps when she's in a crib. No diaper at night either. Unless it's a yeast infection, it should clear up in a day. Then you can use the creams to take care of the last of it. That's what my pediatrican had me try and it always worked. If it doesn't, then you know you'll have to see the doctor. Good luck.

Yes, go to the doctor to check for yeast. The medication will help enormously if it is yeast!

Even if it is, our best tool for fighting diaper rash was the hair dryer. We used it on low or no heat, and dried up our rashy babies behind for several minutes, several times a day. You can see the red leave thier little butts.

After she was dired out, we would put A&D with Desitin on top, and if we could find it, Dr. Budreaxs Butt Paste.

Use only water on the baby. Put baby in luke warm water after each diaper change. Then air dry on a towel on the floor. Once the baby is dry, then put on the creams. Do this with every single diaper change during the day hours and in a couple days it will be all better. This works even for yeast infections with or without yeast infection cream.

Bag Balm is awesome for diaper rash. Like the other moms suggested you may want to bring her in to the Dr's to make sure it's not a yeast infection. Has she been on any antibiotics?

The VERY best thing is AIR!!! Put a trash bag down, then a blanket over that on the couch. Prop up the child with out a diaper. Let them watch TV and keep them there as long as you can. This worked for me bc my daughter wasn't watching a lot of TV, so it was a treat. She peed and sometimes pooed, but it cleared up FAST.

butt paste is currently working the best for us right now. Also, lots of naked time. What kind of diapers are you using? Make sure that she is dry before the next diaper.

We use nystatin cream (sparingly and rubbed in well) from our Pediatrician
on bad diaper rash....begins healing process quickly.

My 4 month old had a diaper rash that would not heal. We tried everything...Butt Paste, Triple Paste, no diaper to let air heal it. Nothing worked until we tried Lotrimin cream. I know it sounds crazy as that's typically for athletes foot and jock itch, but my nurse and daycare provider told me to try it. Like magic, it worked. Her diaper rash looked better with one use and was completely gone in 2 days. I put it on once in the morning, at noon, and before bedtime. I defintiely recommend it. Good luck!

it is probably a yeast infection. you need to buy a yeast infection cream and use it. Yeast infections won't clear up with the regular diaper rash creams. My son had these all the time.

Everything other than butt paste or cornstarch powder made my son's rashes worse. Desitin, A&D, Aquaphor, and talc powder always made the rash worse (and the talc powder made him develop a rash). All we ever use and all I keep at our 2 changing areas are Butt Paste and Cornstarch powder (you can use baby powder with cornstarch or pure cornstarch) and any rash goes away very quickly. If it is a rash that persists, take her to the doctor for a prescription.

It sounds similar to one my son had. When I saw it, I was horrified because it looked so terribly painful. Almost like little blisters. I was told by a family friend-Burrows Solution. I could only find it in powder form at the time & it was a pain to use, but his butt was worth it. LOL What I had to do was make the solution & soak a diaper. Then, he had to sit in that diaper for some period of time. He's 7 now, so I don't remember those specifics. Then, at EVERY change, I got a bowl of warm water & washed him down. Then, let him sit until he was air dry. I used 2 applications of the solution, but it went away pretty quickly. I could see it clearing up after only the first. There is probably a liquid form, but I took what I could find immediately.

If it is diaper rash, this might help. My pediatrician recommended mixing Maalox and Aquaphor into a paste. It worked great for us!

What worked like a charm for my daughter & niece was just good old fashioned petrolium jelly (vascaline). You'll notice a big difference after just a day. It's easier to clean off than desitin & aveeno too. I would use a warm wet wash cloth while she was still raw so it didn't hurt from the soap in wipes. My daughter would get diaper rashes so bad her skin would get real glossed over & shiney and then bleed. It was BAD BAD BAD! This worked better than anything else.

may not be diaper rash, could be a yeast infection. I'd call the doc if nothing is clearing it up.

On the other hand I love pink salve (ask the pharmacist), it worked great for all my kids.
