Seeking OB at 28 Weeks

Hi there! This is my first post ever in cyberspace, let alone on Mamasource! We are in the midst of relocating from Boise to Eugene due to a new job for my husband. I am 28 weeks pregnant and in need of some referrals for an OB/GYN. I am on prednisone and heparin to sustain the pregnancy, so really need an MD as opposed to a Nurse/Midwife.
If you have any pediatrician recommendations, those would be appreciated as well! I think my plan is to deliver at Sacred Heart, but any thoughts on this would be appreciated. It is a bit scary to be starting over at this stage! Thank you!

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your advice! I have been seeing Dr. Katz and Balderston. The entire practice has been great. Mary has been excellent as their Nurse Midwife/FNP and making me feel comfortable in a new practice. We finally got moved and somewhat settled. We are now 36 weeks along and everything is going well. Down the home stretch now! Thanks again for all of your help!

I also love Dr Stenshoel - It's obvious that she loves what she does. She's been my OB/GYN for over 13 years - Pacific Women's Center.

I really like Center for Womens health. I've been going there for 10 years and have seen Dr Monji (who is Part-Time) and Dr Mc Corkle. They have there own lab and ultrasound room right onsite. They are located in Sprinfield next to Mckenzie Willamette Hospital and I believe they only deliver there. So if you change your mind and decide on MW you could check them out. I delivered at MW and had a good experience and like the other post the rooms are nice and you get your own bathroom with a jacuzzi tub. I've heard at Sacred Heart you have to share a bathroom and sometimes a room.

Good luck with your move and welcome to Eugene.

I moved back to Oregon when I was 7 months pregnant. Several people recommended Pacific Womens Center. I tried and DR. Richard Beyerlein accepted me, I'm not sure if he's taking new patients or not but you can give Pacific Womens Center a try. We have used Dr. Byerlein for all three of our births and would have used him with the fourth had the baby survived. Through all he was wonderful. He makes you feel comfortable in every situation and truly cares about his patients. His nurse Toni is warm and caring as well.

Hi C.,

My favorite (and all the local midwives' favorite) OB/Gyn has always been Jan (pronounced "Yahn") Stafl, but he stopped doing births a few years ago. You might try contacting him anyway, to see if he has any recommendations.

As far as where to have your baby, if a home birth or birth center birth is out of the question, I would choose McKenzie Willamette instead of Sacred Heart. They are much less "interventionist" and employ nurse-midwives in their birth center. You will be able to more easily follow your own birth plan, use water, etc.

Welcome to Eugene, by the way!

I had an incredibly positive expereince with my OB for my 2 yr old daughter (despite my inclination towards midwifry what with my mom being one).
His name is Dr. Richard Beyerlein and shares a practice with other docs over at The Pacific Women's Center in the center of town. 151 West 7th Ave. Suite S-110 ###-###-####
Not only was Beyerlein a consumate professional who really knew what he was doing medically, but he was a kind man with a great sense of humor. The staff likewise were kind and helpful and I was very happy to have gone through my pregnancy and post delivery and gynological care with them.
I hope that helps.

First of all - welcome to Eugene, OR. I love it here in Oregon - basically lived here all my life and wouldn't dream of moving.
I don't know of any of those medicines that you are on.....but my OBGYN is Dr. Richard Beyerlein ###-###-#### - He is awesome!!!!!! Hands down. I have referred him to all my friends and two of them just had babies last year and they both loved him. He's funny and easy going, but very experienced and great at what he does. And he delivers at both hospitals.

I personally prefer McKenzie-Willamette for giving birth. Comparing to Sacred Heart - at McKenzie - You are guaranteed your own room, they are great size, comfortable seating for your hubby for when he stays the night. I feel that the nurses are better. They seem to treat you with more respect. I just believe that it is just so much better - plus you don't feel like you are in a puppy mill. When you go through the interviewing/touring process with them - Sacred Heart you are in a group vs. McKenzie you are one on one which is more personal. But I do have to say though - if you are expecting to have any problems with your delivery or anything - Sacred Heart is in the top 5 in the nation for the best Neo-Natel (NIC unit). They have a phenomenal NIC unit!!!!

For my son we use Dr. Kevin Marks at peacehealth ###-###-#### - he's ok. My son doesn't really like him - but everytime he sees him - he's poking him or something. lol.

Anyway - I hope that this helps.

Even though you may need an OB, I'd still suggest talking with a lot of midwives, including homebirth midwives - maybe you don't need an OB after all? Also they could give you recommendations/referrals, if it turns out you really do need an OB. Eugene has a lot of options, so I'd get a lot of (second/third/fourth) opinions. You've got plenty of time to make sure you find someone you feel good with. If you do decide on a hospital birth with an OB, I'd definitely recommend hiring a doula, there are lots of good ones around. And do lots of your own research and reading about birth in general and about you particular needs. Wishing you the best!
