Seeking Al-Anon or Narc-Anon Group

My 37 year old son has recently admitted to being addicted to speed and has joined his church's Recovery group. He's living with me for now, but hopes to move back out in about 3 months. I have a tendency to want to step in and "run" his recovery and push him to go to more meetings. I'm aware of co-dependency and am probably a big "co" and also an enabler, so I'm sure I need to find a local group for family members who have an abuser in their lives. We are not part of Kaiser. We live in Oakland and I work full time. I appreciate any advice and prayers.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I want to thank everyone for their responses and information, and especially for those who will be praying. I've learned of a couple of local groups both my son and I can attend. I hope to attend a meeting tomorrow night. I'll be following some wise advice. I'll check back in after a couple of months and let you know if my son is sticking to his expressed desire to "end" this addiction and start building a real life. Bless you all. It's overwhelming to receive such loving and wise responses when you're feeling all alone in a problem!

I'm a part of a great group it is called Celebrate Recovery and it is on the border of Oakland and San Leandro on the corner of Maccarther and Dutton Ave. If you know were Jewel gas station is it is behind it at 951 Mac Carther blvd.@ Creekside community Church "Celebrate Recovery" is on wed nights @ 7:00-9:00. It is such a helpful and encouraging place to be. Bob Rienhart is the man who leades this ministry and it is saving not only my life but the lives of my children. I would recommend that you come and see for yourself. Look for me my name is A. Turpin and I would be happy to show you around.

Read the book "Beautiful Boy"
Give the responsibility to your son for his recovery...
Listen more, talk less....
It's not your fault.
We moms will always give our children food and shelter....
Hang in there....don't stress out.

What a blessing that your son has taken this first step to recovery. There are a couple of great Al-Anon groups in Oakland that I used to attend.

Tuesdays at 12:00 - St. John's Episcopal Church
Tuesdays at 7:00 - Summit Hospital

Here's the full list of meetings in our area:

Best of luck to your and your family and I will keep you in my prayers.

Call your local Narcotics Anonymous group. they are listed in your local phone directory. they can direct you to family services and provide a list of meetings in the area for your son. I am a recovering addict myself and can tell you from personal experience that the church group thing helps, but it has to be accompanied by a recovery program that includes NA meetings. Admitting he's an addict is the first and biggest step. Don't push him too hard - provide support - but do NOT enable him. If you think he's going back to drugs, kick him out. Leave him on the street. He has to hit his rock bottom before he will truly recover and you won't be doing him any favors if you keep him from that bottom!

Just google Al Anon and Narc Anon and see when they have meetings in your area. I am sure you can find something.

I attend Celebrate Recovery in Alameda. It meets on Sunday nights at 6:00 at Alameda Christian Reform Church on Encinal. I'm a flaming codependent and CR has literally saved my life (I was suicidal when I started attending) and my sanity. You could also do a google search for Codependents Anonymous (CoDA) if you're looking for a secular group.

Best of luck to you.
