Instead of trying to find a maternity coat, why don't you look at a swing style coat. If it fits you now, without a big bulge, then it will fit over the bulge and you'll have a classic coat to wear for years to come.
Hi - I'm due in February of 2012, and am starting to collect my maternity wardrobe. Coats are pricey, it seems - where is the best local place to get a decent maternity coat without paying an arm and a leg? (Any maternity consignment shops suggestions would be welcome?)
(ETA: I might be an L with longer sleeves or an XL in a coat, otherwise I'm an L. The reason I need it is because I'll be going up to the mountains a few times this winter and it gets so cold up there that I'll want to be prepared. Happy to buy second hand, and I don't really want a swing coat.)
Second-hand is fine. :-)
Thanks!
T.

I live in Denver and my son was born in December. I spent an arm and a leg on a cute maternity coat and NEVER once used it. By that point in my pregnancy I was hot all the time, I never even used the winter sweaters I bought. I wore short sleeves til the day I delivered. You really may not even get cold enough to need a winter coat..
I was never late-months pregnant with my kiddos, so I just wore my husbands hooded zip-up fleece and it worked perfectly. I have a friend that delivered in early April and she wore her maternity coat maybe a couple weeks out of the winter. There are serveral Kid To Kid consignment stores around and we have loved the one near us in Aurora. And if you need XL maternity clothes, I have 3 boxes that I have not yet put up on Craigs List that I would love to sell you for cheap! :) We have gotten rid of all other things baby, but I just can't part with my clothes since they were so super comfortable and hard to find in my size.
Dita has a great idea. They are very full at the bottom but fit at the shoulders. Lucille ball wore one when she was pregnant on I love Lucy & they haven't gone out of style yet! :) also there are quite a few second hand stores that carry maternity. Like cotton kids in Parker.
I wore my husband's big lined Carhart sweatshirt. The only coats I saw were dressy.....you could try Back on the Rack though -- they have great consignment clothes - maternity and kids. Good luck.
