Buying Winter Coat Now for Next Winter

There are some pretty good deals in stores right now. I'm thinking of ordering my son a winter coat for next winter, should I or is it too much of a risk because it may not fit him. Land's End has 40% off any one item today. He's 3 1/2 and wears a coat from Land's End that is a Little Kid 4, it fits with a little room to grow this winter. I'm wondering if I should get the next size up or bigger for next winter.

What can I do next?

I would probably get him the next size up. I bought my daughter a coat when they were on clearance last year and she wore it for the rest of last winter and it still fits this winter. I always try to get coats a little big so I can get 2 winters out of them. Same with snow pants.

Go bigger and if you have to, just roll up the sleeves. I bought my 2.5 year old a size 4 two years ago and he can still wear it now. It's a little short in the length, but with our mild winters, it will work for us this year. I was thinking the same thing about going ahead today and getting him one for next year with that deal. Good luck!

The rule of thumb is that a child will always grow faster than you think he/she will. A toddler can wear a coat that's a little too big, but not one that's a little too small. But you might call the Lands' End customer service and ask whether the sizes run large. It's always a guessing game, but I would buy at least a size five. If LE's return policy is friendly (and I hear it is), I'd buy two sizes and keep the one you think will work best after you see them on him.

BUY giant. Like from whatever size they are now, go like four sizes. Or two if they are not weeds(mine are).

My family(mil, mom, aunt and sisters)seem to think my kiddo's are grown. My oldest is in a size 7. he is very tall. So my MIL is buying 10-12 for him. Right now. I have corrected her eighty million times. She does not seem to hear me.

So I hang onto what she buys all of them....my oldest has the best luck, cause he normally can fit into what she buys for the younger two.

By the time he comes into fitting into to stuff, and he does not like some of the stuff, I take it up to my Consignment shop and we swap....They LOVE brand new stuff, and he gets to ''SHOP'' for his own stuff.

Buy big. You can never go wrong with a ''LITTLE TO BIG''.

FYI ON SNOW PANTS(someones comment made me think about this)....I FOUND SNOW PANTS AT THE END OF THE SEASON, FROM TARGET. THEY WERE ON CLEARANCE FOR 4 BUCKS....LIKE KID SIZE SNOW BOARD STYLE...NICE. JUST AN FYI THEIR WINTER CLEARANCE ROCKS.....I bought like four pairs....all next size up on for my oldest. We do not get snow here alot...but we can get cold for LONG periods of time....A deal worth sharing for this next year :)

I always buy winter coats a season ahead. If the 4 fits now, I would buy the 5 for next year. The chance that he will need a 6 is pretty slim.

This is the Land's End return policy:

Guaranteed. Period.®

Our return policy is so simple it’s just two words long: Guaranteed. Period.®

It means you can return anything at anytime for any reason for a full refund of its purchase price.
We care about the quality of our products and your satisfaction with them. Today, tomorrow, forever.

I love Lands End clothes too, and I think it is a great idea to buy for next winter if it is a good price. I don't know if you have time to shop, but I must say that 40% off their regular price isn't that much of a bargain.

Come January and February (and sometimes March), Lands End goes on sale at Sears (in store) and at the Lands End stores. And then they'll have signs that say "take an extra 70% off final price). I have gotten really nice jackets for $7, hats for $2, sweaters for $6. Sometimes it is slim pickings on sizes though.

Since there is no hurry for your son, you might just want to wait until after Christmas. I'm pretty sure that 40% off offer will come around again soon. And you never know, maybe one of your relatives will get him a coat for Christmas.

My son is four and I always buy his coat for next year at after Xmas sales. We have never had a problem with then not fitting, I just buy the next size up. Works for us, but I usually spend about six bucks on his coat, so if it didn't fit, I would donate it and try again.

I do this every year! It is a risk, but most of the time, it'll work fine while they're this little.
I would size up, just to be safe. It's better to have a coat that's a little too big, than too small.

PS: thanks for posting this! I just got my 3.5 yr old a down coat for next winter. $80 coat, and I got it for $35! :)

Buy them now. At least 1 or 2 sizes bigger. Your son can still wear a coat that is a little big. But you can't get on a coat that is too small.
My wife & I have been doing this for the last few years. If you're lucky, you might even get at least 2 years out of a coat that is a little big.

I used to do the same thing when my kids were little. Unfortunately, the older they get the less you can get away with this because the growth spurts seem bigger. My 12 year old son wore a size 14 coat last year & this year I had to buy him a size 20 so the sleeves would be long enough!
