Right When They Get Home from School

When your kids walk in the door from school, what is the first thing they want to do? My kids want to EAT. then.......

What fun things do you do when the kids get home? I feel like our weekdays are so rushed with dinners, homework, baths, lunches, etc. I want to make this more fun! We are getting outside to play more lately as the weather is improving, but I need other ideas! I have a new baby and I am the primary cook, so mom-less or mom-not-as-needed play ideas are great!

INFO: Kids ages 6 and 7

PLEASE NOTE - I SPEND TIME WITH MY KIDS ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT AND ON WEEKENDS. Most of our fun times have to come on weekends due to the business of the weekdays. I need AN HOUR to myself (and when I say myself, I mean breastfeeding baby, cooking dinner and getting a load of laundry started). Hubby is out some days for about an hour for work after he drops kids off at home with me, so I am looking for suggestions to occupy the little ones during this hour or so.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Nevermind the question - thanks for the suggestions, moms. Our nights sound just like yours, play outside for a little while, baths, then reading and bed. (maybe a little WII thrown in). Disregard the question - I will just continue to do what I have been doing.

My kids get a snack right when they walk in the door. I try to have healthy stuff available for them, but sometimes I go with milk and cookies.

After their snack, they are supposed to get started on their homework. I prefer to have them do it early, so that it's not an issue the rest of the night. Then, they have a chore or two. On nice days, I'll sometimes let them play outside before everything else is done (but technically counts as homework, as they are supposed to turn in minutes of physical activity each week), but no computer or tv till after homework and chores.

My 5 and 7 years old play outside until dinner. After dinner, it's homework, then they're back outside while I clean up. Then, shower, jammies, reading time, bedtime!! I knock out as much homework as possible on Mondays (it's usually spelling words for the whole week)... my kids BEG to get all their work knocked out!! We also do lots of homework at our property on the river, so they work work work then PLAYPLAYPLAY!!!!!

Can they just go play in the backyard with your back door open? Give them a healthy snack and send them to the back yard.
Is it completely gated or fenced? I would let them go out and play on their swings, kick the ball, run around. Let them do this for about 45 minutes, then have them come in and do their homework. If they finish it and do a good job, maybe they can go out and play some more till dinner.

My son has a drink and a snack, then does his homework right away. After that--it's up to him! Sometimes we hit the park, the yard or play some Wii. Then it's dinner, shower, read, snack, prayers, bed. Usually.

I pick up my kids up every day for my 7 yr old. My almost 5 yr attends nursery school in the morning. 11 yr old I pick up at school normally after school activities.
We do homework most days. M-W we do karate. Then we eat dinner and have baths and get to bed.

My girls, ages 11 and 8 come home from school and eat everything they touch. They act like they haven't eaten all day (I make them a healthy breakfast and pack them a nutritious lunch every day). Sadly, there are no fun things to do. They have homework to do, then I have cooking to do, clean up, bath time, and in bed by 8 P.M. Weekdays are very busy for us. Were a family of 5 and soon to be 6 in a couple of weeks. Fun time happens for us on the weekends and even then, weekends are busy. My kiddos are happy as clams as long as they can go outside to play. I try to let them play for a short time after school but they do have quite a bit of homework every day and I'd prefer their homework get done long before dinner is served.
