Recent Experience with Presbyterian Allen (For Labor and Delivery)?

Just wondering if anyone has an opinion on Presbyterian Allen for Labor and Delivery based on a RECENT experience? I've been looking on the Q&A boards but most answers are from 2008. Just wondering if anyone has had a baby there in the last year or so and how it was for them. I've heard (lately) it's one of the best in the Presby system, but obviously the old posts refute that. I'm considering switching OBs, but I want to make sure the hospital is okay before I do... Thanks!

What can I do next?

I had a great experience there in April, when my 2nd was born via c section (1st was at McKinney). Definitely liked Allen better than McKinney. I was a little concerned about the rooming in, since I had a c-section and DH couldn't stay overnight 'cuz he had to be home with our eldest, but nurses totally picked up the slack and helped out--were even much more prompt with it than the nursery nurses at McKinney (where I'd often have to wait 30-45 minutes after a night feeding for someone to take DD back so we could sleep). Overall, I definitely recommend Allen. Only concern if there's a chance you'll need preemie NICU, but hopefully that's not the case, and if it is, you can go elsewhere.

Also TOTALLY recommend Dr. Luciani, chair of obstetrics at Allen, if you're looking for an OB. Good luck and congrats!

Well, I haven't looked at the other posts, and I'm not exactly the answer you're looking for because my most recent baby was August 2008, BUT... I love Presby Allen. I chose it over McKinney...even so much as to go with my second choice of Midwife (another story). Let me preface this by saying I do not have complicated pregnancies or deliveries, so I have not had to deal with any "extra" services. But for the basic stay in a labor/delivery/postpartum ward, it's great. I love that they basically never make the baby leave the room, unless you want him/her to. They are very friendly to more progressive requests (holding the baby with the umbilical cord attached, holding the baby longer before doing the well-check, preferences with vitamin K and other medicinal practices, etc.); they allow the daddy and siblings to give the first bath; rooming in; and so on. They won the award that is associated with all of these (don't remember what the name of it is now, but I think it's on the website). They are very friendly to midwives and natural childbirth...not easily found in the DFW area. (Even if I didn't want to use a midwife or go drug-free, I would want a hospital that was known for this because it shows they are more open-minded and that can help out in many decisions outside of these...they tend to listen more to the mother too).
So, I know I'm not a "recent" experience, but I've heard they've gotten even better! I was one of the first to be able to use the tub they installed (even ended up giving birth in water! I know....crazy!! Still can't hardly believe I did it!). Again they just prove to me that there can be a mix of medical and natural intervention and that is exactly what I was looking for.
Well, hope that helps. I know you mentioned changing ob's...if you'd consider a midwife I'll give you my story of how I went from an ob to a midwife...even when my ob was great (it was actually his idea). Don't want to bog you down with those details if that's not anything you want to hear!!

I had both of my babies there, and both experiences were wonderful. My youngest just turned one today. I only had one complaint after having both kiddos delivered via c-section. My oldest had to be under the bili-lamp and the night nurse did not turn on the heat, even when we questioned her. My hubby was not able to stay overnight with me when our youngest was born, and my night nurses were absolutely fabulous!!! (I had the same nurses every night I was there.). So even with that one tiny complaint, I highly recommend Presby of Allen!!!

I had my baby in August 2010 --- emergency situation, my OB isn't even at Presby Allen, but everything worked out fine. Our baby was preemie by 4 weeks, so he was in the NICU and they were fantastic there. He was out in just a week, so he didn't have any crazy complications. I had some complications and they took great care of me, also. The nurses were awesome, and we all got a lot of attention.

Our hospital was supposed to be Baylor Frisco, but our second choice would be Presby Allen. HTH!

I gave birth to DS2 in Feb 2010. I chose Allen because I wanted a midwife delivery and she was also open to a water delivery. I also liked that they were a baby-friendly hospital. Baby was not given a pacifier and I was not sent home with any formula paraphernalia. I'm sure they had it if I had asked. I live 2 blocks from Medical Center of Plano (MCOP) though, and hubby gave me grief about being not going to the closest hospital.
Okay, I do remember one thing that I didn't like about Allen Presby (as compared to MCOP). When I was at MCOP, whenever anyone came in to give me a pill they would scan my bracelet and then scan the medication. They didn't to that at Allen. The only med I got there was Motrin afterwards, but still I think they could do better.
And a couple of times different staff wrote vital stats (blood pressure, baby's weight) on scrap pieces of paper that they were going to transfer to the chart later, instead of writing directly in the chart. Yes, that is the anal scientist in me that they shouldn't be doing that. I did put these complaints in the patient questionnaire they send you afterward.
And, if your husband stays the night, bring your own air mattress. The recliner doesn't recline all the way to be a bed.
